The webinar “Opting for the Power of Nonviolence over the ‘Logic’ of Violence” will reflect on the challenges of violence in the Asia-Pacific and the transformative potential of nonviolence. Korea

On 15 August, Pax Christi Korea joined the Korea-Japan Platform for Reconciliation and Peace in marking the 80th anniversary of Liberation. The joint statement urged reconciliation, human rights, diplomacy over militarisation, denuclearisation and historical justice as foundations for lasting peace in East Asia.

Japan

A US Peace Delegation joined Japanese counterparts to mark the 80th anniversary of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. With bishops, academics and students present, the highlight was a dialogue between youth from the US and Japan. Using a synodal methodology, the encounter fostered genuine community and hope for peace. Read more here and here.

Philippines

On 29 August, the Center for Peace Education Miriam College and Pax Christi Pilipinas held the forum “Hibakusha Memories: A Call to End Nuclear Weapons”. Survivors from Nagasaki shared testimonies of loss, resilience and hope, urging that Nagasaki must be the last city to suffer an atomic bomb. Read more here.

Sri Lanka

On 30 August 2025, the Human Rights Office in Kandy marked the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances. Families of the disappeared, human rights defenders and civil society gathered to honour victims, share testimonies, and call for truth and justice. Speakers stressed that enforced disappearance remains a crime against humanity, demanding legal reforms, reparations, and protection for affected families.
