Vanguard's VOO YTD

Return As Of March 12, 2026

-2.33%

4 Reasons Why Payroll Stocks Are Dropping

  1. Slowing employment growth: Payroll processors earn more when their clients employ more workers. If hiring slows or layoffs rise, payroll volumes flatten. Some key metrics (like ADP’s “pays per control”) have already stalled year-over-year, which worries investors about future growth.
  2. Pressure on revenue per client: Companies are reportedly choosing lower-tier service bundles and fewer add-ons, which can reduce average revenue per customer.
  3. Valuation reset: Payroll companies historically trade at premium valuations because their revenue is recurring and sticky. As growth expectations cool, investors may be repricing the stocks downward.
  4. Broader market weakness: Recent sell-offs happened during down days for the overall stock market, which dragged the sector lower as well.

*All YTD returns are presented with the assumption of reinvestments of any dividends on ex-date.

Your Sales And Marketing Tip(s)

Struggling To Generate Payroll Sales Leads?

Then Try These 2 Winning Tips!

(Share With Your Owner, Sales Leader, And Sales Team)

By Glenn Fallavollita, President of SellMorePayroll.com

  • Word Count: 325
  • Read Time: 1.3 Minutes

For owners and sales leaders of a payroll service bureau, one of the most important strategic questions in 2026 is this: Where should you invest your marketing dollars AND sales training efforts that will generate the most NEW PAYROLL CLIENTS (and of the highest quality).

It's All About Your Proposal Closing Ratios.

Payroll salespeople typically experience dramatically different closing ratios depending on the lead source:

  • CPA Referrals = ~75% close rate.
  • Client Referrals = ~50% close rate.
  • Cold Prospects = ~5% close rate.

As you can see, the closing ratios above should show you where to spend your marketing dollars and sales training efforts.

Sales Leader Tip #1: Spend Your Marketing Dollars On Campaigns That Drive In New Leads/Referrals.

If your goal is to generate more new payroll clients, my recommendation is to do two things

  • Recommendation: Develop a drip marketing system that nurtures your database of clients, CPAs, and business prospects. Newsletters are nice to send; however, the real sales leads and referrals come from other 'e-mail marketing campaigns.'

Sales Leader Tip #2: Focus On Your Salespeople.

The most successful payroll service bureaus focus less on finding strangers and more on leveraging trusted relationships. By setting expectations for attending phone blitz sessions, sales follow-up training, developing CPA alliances, and asking clients for a referral, sales leaders can help their salespeople dramatically increase their closing ratios while reducing the cost of acquiring new payroll clients.

  • Recommendation: Create a series of time-spaced sales training classes that train your salespeople on how to educate CPAs and other referral partners on the benefits of recommending your payroll service to a business client.

  • Recommendation: Require your entire sales team to attend 3X per week, 90-minute phone blitz sessions (this is where the sales magic happens).

  • Recommendation: Require all salespeople to complete a weekly proposal tracking report. This 'show me the money report' is the #1 thing a sales leader needs to have their sales team complete.

P.S. Cold outreach efforts still have a place; however, they should not consume your marketing budget or sales training efforts.

McKee fires Department of Administration
director after another payroll system debacle

Rhode Island Department of Administration (DOA) Director Jonathan Womer will be stepping down from his post effective immediately, Gov. Dan McKee announced Friday afternoon.

McKee’s office released a statement that Womer tendered his resignation at the governor’s request. Womer’s exit after three years leading the department follows ongoing issues with the much-maligned rollout of the state’s new payroll system, including possible exposure of state employees’ Social Security numbers via tax forms sent by mail.

  • “Our employees trust the Department of Administration to handle their pay and personal information with the highest level of care,” McKee said in a statement. “This transition is about making sure state government is operating the way our employees and taxpayers expect and deserve.”

  • McKee’s announcement came Friday at 3:12 p.m., just 13 minutes after a separate news release from the Department of Administration declared the agency would be offering free credit monitoring to current and former state employees who received corrected W-2C forms after having received erroneous versions of the tax documents earlier this year.

The corrected forms were emailed on Feb. 25, but some may have had state employees’ Social Security numbers visible through the envelopes, the administration department said in its Friday release.

Nonfarm payrolls contract in February, hit by

healthcare strike; unemployment rate ticks up to 4.4%

Mar. 06, 2026 8:32 AM ETBy: Liz Kiesche, SA News Editor

U.S. nonfarm payrolls dropped by 92K in February, compared with the +60K consensus and a sharp reversal from the 126K jobs added in January (revised from +130K), according to data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday.

Health care jobs, which have been a major driver of jobs growth in recent months, declined by 28K, reflecting strike activity.

  • But that wasn't the sole cause of the weakness. Employment in information (-11K) and the federal government (-10K) continued their downward trend. Employment in social assistance increased by 9K, driven by individual and family services (+12K).

  • The unemployment rate edged up to 4.4% from 4.3% in January and was in line with the 4.4% consensus.

  • "The nonfarm payroll report was shockingly weaker than expected, with multiple sectors of the economy showing job contractions," said Michael Kramer of Mott Capital Management, Investing Group Leader for Reading The Markets.
