LETTER FROM OUR PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents,

As the end to the school year, and my formal time at Payton, draw near, I want to thank you for the love, care, and support each of you has offered your own child(ren), other Payton students, our faculty, each other, and certainly me.  Together, we have built a dynamic place...a transformative place...that provides wonderful time and space for our students to live and grow, and propels them into lives of self-determination, self-less and caring leadership, and innovation.  We know it takes a village...always has and always will...and the village of Payton is so special, and is made markedly so because you-the parents-lean into the students of our community to offer so much to nurture them along the journey from childhood to young adulthood.  They are so better off because of you!

And to the FOP leadership...now and in the past...it is indescribable how welcome, important, and effective your efforts have been.  Without hyperbole, our wonderful community would be a vastly different place and experience for our students and faculty alike if it were not for your steady, creative, bold, and warm leadership.

Personally, it has been the honor of a lifetime to lead this community for the past 9 years.  We have built a school of values and equity, of excellence and growth, and lots of fun sprinkled in, too.  In my nine years, I have met with, worked with, and enjoyed so many Payton parents.  You have stretched my heart, mind, and actions.  You have made me a better leader of students and faculty.  We have shared in highs and lows, but through it all, we have remained squarely focused on creating a terrific community for our kids.

Payton is a shining star in American education.  Yes, of course, there is more to do, because all human organizations need continued nurture and care.  I am so excited to see how Payton continues to evolve.  I will remain enjoined with Payton's people and purposes, and I will support, advocate, and cheer for this community.

Always...Go Grizzlies,

Tim

Walter Payton College Prep 20th Anniversary
Walter Payton College Prep 20th Anniversary
NEW principal for Payton HS
After a thorough and well communicated process, the Local School Council (LSC) for Payton has hired Melissa Resh of Lakeview High School as the principal for Walter Payton College Prep for the 2020-2021 school year.

Formal Announcement from LSC below

To the Payton Community,
The Payton Local School Council is pleased to announce that we have offered the position of principal for Walter Payton College Prep to Melissa Resh of Lake View High School, and that she has accepted. We will be signing an employment contract with her in the coming days. We have been heartened throughout our selection process by the level of engagement of the Payton community. We have taken very seriously our role to represent all voices in our community and to reach out proactively to make sure everyone is heard.

We are thrilled to welcome Ms. Resh into our community. Her track record of success in academics and instruction gives us great comfort that Payton will continue its leadership position in academic innovation and excellence. She also brings years of experience and dedication to the principles and practice of equity that can take Payton to the next level of our work in increasing equity and access for all of our students and community. Equity is at the foundation of who we are at Payton. Allowing every child the opportunity to reach their full potential is crucial to our mission. In addition, Ms. Resh has highly relevant managerial experience in CPS high schools, and a work ethic and action-oriented personality that will allow her to take the reins at Payton during this difficult time.

The LSC also wants to express its sincere gratitude to all the other candidates for this position, especially to Jaya Miller-Little, our other finalist in the process. Ms. Miller-Little has been extremely gracious with her time as her own school and life have been radically changed, and has been flexible and patient with our process as we revamped it to an almost entirely virtual one. Her talent and dedication to students are truly impressive, and we appreciate the time and hard work she put into this process.

The LSC has recognized from the beginning of this process that we have a difficult task in replacing Tim Devine, who has led our school for the past nine years and created the environment, even while facing chronic underfunding and budget cuts, for Payton to become one of the most successful and progressive schools in the nation. We have spent hundreds of hours recruiting candidates and vetting them through interviews, reference checks, discussions, community forums, and public meetings, and all during one of the most trying periods we have faced in our lifetimes.

Through every step of this unprecedented process, Ms. Resh, through her own words and actions as well as strong support from those who know her both professionally and personally, has proven that she has the experience, integrity, and strength of character to lead Payton. She is more than up to the challenge of filling Mr. Devine's shoes and we fully expect that she will keep moving Payton forward in the right direction.

We are thrilled to speak with a unified voice as an LSC in our support for Melissa Resh as our next leader, and we invite you to join us in welcoming her as we move into our next chapter as a school and community.

Sincerely,

The Walter Payton College Prep Local School Council
