Please Join us in Celebration and Commemoration

of the International Day of Peace!

On September 21, 2022, the United Nations International Day of Peace (Peace Day) will be acknowledged and celebrated by hundreds of millions of people around the world focusing on the theme “End Racism. Build Peace.” 

Initially, the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted Resolution 36/37 on November 30, 1981, that stated that the International Day of Peace should be devoted "to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples.” Pathways To Peace (PTP) Co-Founder, Avon Mattison, led efforts to influence development of the 1981 Resolution. Robert Muller, then Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations stated a vision for the International Day of Peace, “It would be a worldwide communion in spirit of all peoples on earth."

This is a tender time for Pathways To Peace, as it is the first Peace Day after the ascension of our beloved Avon Mattison. We know that she continues her work, and we feel her support as we roll out the 2022 Peace Day events. Peace Day is in the DNA of Pathways To Peace!

Important Global Initiative

With so many conflicts today being waged between political militias, criminal, and international terrorist groups, feelings of uncertainty and conflict are top of mind around our world. In response, a coalition of peacebuilding organizations launched a project for people around the world to sign on to a World Peace Treaty. Called Sign the World Peace Treaty, the initiative intends to give both organizations and individuals around the world a vehicle to express their desire for a more peaceful world, and then encourages them to take concrete steps that activate that desire. The initiative culminates on September 21, the International Day of Peace (Peace Day.) Chowdhury, erstwhile Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations, President of the UN Security Council, President of UNICEF Executive Board, UN Under-Secretary-General and Senior Special Advisor to UN General Assembly President.  “The culture of peace is in reality an integral part of humanity’s desire for peace, justice and human security. This realization has now become more pertinent amid the ever-increasing militarism and militarization that is destroying both our planet and our people. “With our world yearning for peace, there are steps we can all take as global citizens toward greater unity. That is why we support the signing of World Peace Treaty this September 21.”

Watch the 1984 launch of the International day of Peace

On September 18, 1984, Pathways To Peace organized the first major civil society celebration of the International Day of Peace in San Francisco which included 70 countries around the world and in partnership with the sister city of Assisi.

 Among the many events this year, on Wednesday, September 14, at 8:00 pm ET, a historic reunion of the people who organized and spoke at this first global celebration in San Francisco in 1984 will take place virtually.
