Hello Lydia,
Central to our vision for community safety is the safety that community creates — the feeling that comes when you’re surrounded by friends, family, and people you trust to look out for you. More often than not, this is a feeling we find when we are spending time doing things we love. This special brand of community safety is one that is craved by and appreciated by people of all backgrounds. Almost everyone feels more safe when they are with people who they love, doing the things they love to do.
This week's email features a couple of key examples of what community safety can look like. The safety of bringing a joyous event to a beloved park. The safety of moving through community with a large group of friends and neighbors. Safety from the extreme heat at community Cooling Zones. And even the safety of being part of a community that is helping provide our young people with the essentials they need to kickoff the school year in a strong way.
Our office initiated some of these activities, the City started others, and some were the creation of community groups. My invitation to you is to think about the events you can create or participate in that will create the warm feeling of community safety and see where you can be a part of creating that feeling. Our vision of safety for all is incumbent on all of us doing our part. I look forward to you joining one of the opportunities we’ve shared and attending the events you initiate to create community safety.

Council District 9 Updates | |
Mount Hope - Peace in the Park
For so many years, Dennis V Allen Park was a place of peace and comfort. Last Saturday, with the help of 40 plus organizations, we held the Peace in the Park event which activated the area and once again made Dennis V Allen a place where all are welcome and safe. The City also opened a new exploration area made from recycled trees from the winter storms. While at the event, Council President Elo-Rivera spoke to residents who were eager to see more change in the area.
Activating the park for events like this will only bolster community activism and unity. We agree, for far too long, opportunities have varied wildly for communities throughout our city. More investment in places like Mount Hope is very dear to our office. As we continue, we encourage everyone to come and be a part of the change the Mount Hope community deserves.

Legislative Recess
City Council will be on legislative recess from Wednesday, August 2nd through Tuesday, September 5th. This means no Council meetings for the next four weeks. The next Council meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 6th, 2023.

Celebrating Summer & Back to School
The Colina del Sol Recreation Center is an End of Summer Teen Night on Friday, August 18th from 5:30-10PM. Some of the activities include football, dance competition, food, music, and a screening of The Sandlot at 8PM. As part of the celebration, Parks & Recreation wants to help our youth prepare for getting back to school. They’ll be having a backpack and school supply giveaway!

City Heights Community Walk | |
Continuing our dedication to safety in our communities, the District 9 Council Office held our second community walk, again starting at Central Mini Park. Early morning, Saturday August 5th at 7 a.m., more neighbors from throughout our City Heights communities joined together to walk, talk, and enjoy our Saturday morning. Community Forum: Consolidated Plan
CALLING ALL SAN DIEGANS! How would you spend $135 million in your community over the next five years? Join the City of San Diego for this virtual community forum and share your insights!
We need your help determining how best to spend federal funds to invest in San Diego communities. Together, we can prioritize key areas such as affordable housing, sustainability, shelters, job opportunities, and infrastructure.

Parks After Dark Program
Parks are essential and provide an environmental and recreational good to our communities. That’s why we were grateful to join our City, County, and community leaders in seeing the return of the Parks After Dark program. Activating our parks through programs, activities, and people are just a few ways we can foster safety among our community.
Parks After Dark will bring family fun activities (live entertainment, activities for all ages, games and free meals for kids) every weekend to City Heights, Linda Vista, Logan Heights, and Skyline through the end of summer.

Cool Zones
Stay Cool San Diego! During periods of extreme heat, certain recreation centers, libraries, and other public buildings are places for San Diegans to seek relief from warmer weather.
District 9 has four locations identified as Cool Zones! If you’re in D9 checkout one of these locations to beat the heat:
- City Heights Recreation Center
- City Heights Library
- College-Rolando Library
- Kensington Library

City of San Diego Infrastructure Priorities Survey
Community members wanting to submit infrastructure ideas for their neighborhoods until Aug. 15, 2023, to fill out the survey to be included in the fiscal year 2025 (July 1, 2024 - June 30, 2025) budget process. The City of San Diego extended the deadline for the Infrastructure Priorities Survey so San Diegans have more time to provide staff with ideas for new or upgraded parks, libraries, streets and sidewalks.
The survey is open throughout the year and informs the annual updates to the City’s Five-Year Capital Infrastructure Planning Outlook (Five-Year Outlook), which assists in planning future infrastructure projects.
