Vicar Amber's Sunday Message
“The spirit of the Lord God is upon me… he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed… to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Imagine if Isaiah were to show up at a street corner near you declaring this message. Would the words land like balm on your spirit, or would you say, “2020? Yeah, right…” and keep walking? Good news can often sound pretty incredible, especially when the situation at hand seems anything but good. Can we trust such news, or will opening ourselves to it just lead to disappointment? The Israelites in the 5th Century BCE likely wondered about this news, themselves, considering they have been in exile for decades. Is Isaiah’s proclamation too good to be true, or could it be too good to miss out on?
Holy God, you do not deceive us with empty promises but turn to us with mercy and love. Open our hearts to receive your word with joy and expectation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

SUNDAY SCHOOL
Kids can sing along with the music, listen to a Bible story, and do a craft. The Sunday lesson will be made available on the weekends, but watch whenever and wherever works for you and your child! Watch on YouTube!
WONDERING...
REAL QUESTIONS FROM REAL PEOPLE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT GLC
How can we be community when we have to be apart? This great question posed by one of our confirmation students is one that we've been dealing with for the last 9 months. We've tried a lot of things and have learned that there isn't just one answer. Some of you feel connected through the YouTube worship. Others need to be in the building to feel connected. Others appreciate notes and things appearing on their doorstep. Some reach out for help and others are able to provide the help. In weddings, I often have the couple look at the people who have gathered as a way to remember all the people that are praying for them when it's just the two of them.  The same is true for us, in these days when we are apart, we can close our eyes and picture the community that we are connected to even now.

GLC Virtual Advent Calendar -- Stay Grounded, Stay Connected
Follow along with the GLC Virtual Advent Calendar! Each day we see and hear from a different member(s) of the GLC community! It's a meaningful way to stay grounded in faith and connected to each other in this season of Advent. Make sure to check it out -- plus it's fun to open the doors to see who's behind 'em!
Wait! You don't have a GLC yard sign yet?
Let's share with our neighbors that nothing can take away our hope, peace, joy and love...not a pandemic, not an election, not the challenges we face. Want a sign for your own yard? We've stashed signs under the portico so stop by anytime and grab one!
Thank you!
Through your support...Geneva Lutheran has sent a check for $14,000 to the Metropolitan Chicago Synod. This represents ten percent of our offerings for the first quarter of our fiscal year. Through this support we are part of advancing the proclamation of the Gospel through mission in our area and around the world as the offerings are shared with the ELCA who uses them for support of colleges and universities, disaster response, and especially important in this Covid time, hospital systems. #generouslifeinChrist

A quick reminder that one little known provision of the CARES Act is the ability of individuals and joint filers to donate up to $300 and deduct the entire $300! This means that whether or not you itemize on your taxes that you can still deduct up to $300 for 2020.
Katherine Anderson age 107, died in Greenville, TN on Monday, December 7. She was a long time member of GLC and participated in the life of the congregation until she was no longer able to drive, when she stayed connected through visits in her home. She lived on her own until she was 103 when she moved to Tennessee to be close to her daughter, Charlene McClellan. She had a wonderful sense of humor and memories of a Geneva most of us can only imagine. Please keep her family in your prayers as they celebrate a faithful life and grieve a faithful death. Katherine is pictured here in 2015 holding the flower that bears her name, "Katherine's Faith." Read her obituary here.

Talk about my jaw dropping! Your poinsettia's arrival on Wednesday was quite a surprise. And it is gorgeous! Just as I got out to plant the "Joy" sign Thursday morning, a woman came by with her beagle and immediately voiced her endorsement. Thanks to all of you.
