Dear Nevada AAP Members,
Before you explore this newsletter which is full of Nevada Chapter updates, member opportunities, and events, I encourage you to think about language because:
Words Matter
I encourage you to read this guidance, share it with your practices, and help the AAP to champion the use of inclusive language that invites everyone to the conversation.
As Dr Beers says, this guidance is not intended to be a strict set of “do’s and don’ts.” Instead, it’s meant to guide the AAP to be more intentional and aware of the words we are using, so that we can create connection and trust with all our audiences. More information about Words Matter can also be found in an AAP News article here.
Thank you for all you do to improve pediatric care in Nevada!
Be well,
Leann

THANK YOU to the Nevada AAP Chapter members who attended our networking event to welcome the new UNLV pediatric residents on June 18 at The Mob Museum in Las Vegas!
Now that we are all vaccinated, it's wonderful to meet in person again! That said, it's interesting to note that Nevada AAP members voted overwhelmingly to have our Annual Meeting and CME virtual again this year. We'll have more information on that virtual event soon. In the meantime, we are also working on an in-person networking event in Reno as well as looking to bring back in-person Walk with a Doc in Las Vegas and Reno after the first of the year when kids of all ages should have access to the COVID-19 vaccine.
Chapter members wanting to volunteer for any of our events are encouraged to contact Executive Director Leann D. McAllister on her cell 508-685-0918 or by email ED@NevadaAAP.org.

A big thank you to Nevada AAP Secretary/Treasurer and Gun Violence Prevention Advocate Terence McAllister, MD, FAAP who worked with our Special Projects Intern Leanne Chen to produce a new blog piece on Guns in the Home. In addition to the blog post, Dr. McAllister also spoke with Nevada parents at a recent Walk with a Doc on safe gun storage at home.
The Nevada AAP Blog gives Chapter Members an opportunity to take state-wide, national, and international health news and best practices, and focus it specifically on improving pediatric healthcare in Nevada. All chapter members are welcome to contribute!

Here in Nevada, school districts have given into parents who are spreading misinformation about untrue "dangers" of wearing masks and, against AAP recommendations, are not requiring masks in school for some younger children.

Safer Disinfectant Use During the COVID-19 Pandemic
|
The Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Units (PEHSU) program has created resources for families safely reduce the spread of COVID-19. The resources include a Safer Disinfectant Use During the COVID-19 Pandemic fact sheet and infographic. Endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the resources provide information on safer disinfectant use during the COVID-19 pandemic. The fact sheet and infographic can be used by health care professionals, families, schools, and/or early care and education professionals and offer guidance on cleaning surfaces safely, properly disinfecting to kill germs, and how to make safer, effective disinfection choices. They are both available in English and Spanish. Visit the PEHSU website to learn more!
