Pediatric Updates, Opportunities &
Saturday, 3 October 2020 | Issue 30
Dear Chapter Members,

I don't usually work on the weekends, but if you're like me, you're between sessions at AAP's National Conference and Exhibition and feeling inspired!

Thank you to those of you who have registered and submitted videos sharing what you envision for children in Nevada as we prepare for our virtual Annual Meeting and CME on Saturday, October 24! While the national AAP conference is amazing, our annual chapter event provides an unique opportunity for us to work together to improve pediatric outcomes at the state level.

Our annual meeting is made possible in part by our Premiere Sponsors Primary Children's Hospital & Mead Johnson, as well as all our virtual exhibitors. Please join us in thanking them!

For questions about our annual meeting or any of the updates in today's newsletter, I can be reached at my contact information below.

Be well,
Leann D. McAllister, Executive Director

Nevada AAP Member Jose Cucalon Calderon, MD, FAAP is leading our chapter in lowering youth e-cigarette use in Nevada.

Soon after taking on the role of E-cigarette Chapter Champion, Dr. Cucalon Calderon secured a $1,000 AAP grant to support his volunteer work for the Nevada AAP. Our chapter will be using much of the grant to hold and promote a Spanish-language Walk with a Doc event on the dangers of e-cigarettes for families throughout Nevada on November 15. Visit to download a flyer to promote the event with your patients.

Dr. Cucalon Calderon has also author authored a new blog post for the Nevada AAP website calling on fellow pediatricians, parents, teachers, public health officials, and lawmakers to join him in working to decrease e-cigarette use in Nevada, especially for teens. Click here to read the entire post.

Nevada AAP Receives Grant
The Nevada Chapter of the AAP is one of a handful of chapters to receive a grant from AAP and the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families (CCF) to educate the public and policymakers about how the state and national response to the COVID-19 pandemic is impacting children.

Our chapter has been tasked with collaborating with the Children's Advocacy Alliance to advocate for state-wide policies that impact threats to access to care, declining vaccination rates, and delayed identification and treatment for developmental and behavioral health problems that create new challenges and exacerbate preexisting health disparities.

Chapter members will have an opportunity to help prioritize state policies in a survey later this year.
