Dear Cha pter Members,

Voting for the next President of the American Academy of Pediatrics starts today. I hope you will vote!

Over these past weeks the current president, Sara “Sally” H. Goza, MD, FAAP, has proved time and again how critical the president's role is as she has led AAP efforts to advocate for children and pediatricians at the national level. When Dr. Goza's term ends at the end of this calendar year, AAP President Elect Lee Beers, MD, FAAP, who has been collaborating with Dr. Goza all year, will be ready to take over the role of AAP President.

It is now up to all AAP members to get to know the candidates and vote for who will succeed Dr. Beers. Learn more in the Opportunities section of this email below.

Be well,
Lee

UPDATES
Nevada AAP Welcomes Summer Public Health Intern Eliana Bernal
The Nevada AAP is excited to welcome Eliana Bernal for an internship in public health and advocacy.

Eliana is working with Chapter Executive Director Leann McAllister to create a Nevada AAP advocacy agenda handout for the 2021 Nevada Legislative session.

Eliana is a public health student at the University of Nevada, Reno. Her experience working as a medical assistant has inspired her to become a public health professional that will empower the voiceless to reduce health disparities. She has lived in the Northern Nevada area over the last five years and loves participating in the recreational activities the region has to offer. She enjoys spending time with her two Shih-Tzu puppies named Donovan and Jazz, practicing her photography skills, and mastering family heirloom recipes. Eliana is excited to be a part of the Nevada AAP team and looks forward to this learning experience.
Shots for Tots Flyer
The Nevada AAP worked with Immunize Nevada and the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health to create a flyer to encourage families to visit their pediatrician for vaccines during the pandemic.

The flyer can be download in English and Spanish by clicking on the image.

Nevada AAP members are encouraged to distribute this flyer to your patients. In addition, it is being distributed to families through multiple partners throughout the state.
Nevada Prescription Drug Costs
The Nevada Committee to Conduct an Interim Study Concerning the Costs of Prescription Drugs solicited legislative recommendations from the public. The Nevada AAP submitted recommendations on the form downloadable by clicking on the image.

In truth, Nevada’s better than many other states when it comes to this issue. In 2017, the AAP’s first priority when it came to prescription drug costs was to advocate for establishing legislative commissions or requiring state agencies to study the issue which is EXACTLY what Nevada did in 2019.

Nevada AAP Members are encouraged to contact LDMcAllister@AAP.net with your thoughts on what the Chapter should be advocating for at the sate level.
WebIZ Corrections
Many Nevada AAP Members have reported frustration with inaccurate patient data in WebIZ, Nevada's Immunization Information Systems (IIS). Pediatricians are especially frustration that pharmacy administered vaccines are often missing from the system.

It is critical that the database have accurate and complete vaccination records. State officials are urging doctors and patients to report data errors to their helpline at izit@health.nv.gov .

By reporting errors and omissions to the State, you help them to identify and correct problems in the system.
