Today I'm sending one final Chapter Update for 2020 to both celebrate some incredible recent work by chapter members and to (hopefully) inspire you to make New Year's resolutions to engage in chapter opportunities and virtual events scheduled in 2021 starting with a virtual social hour for members on January 7.

Caring for All Children in Nevada
In collaboration with the Children's Advocacy Alliance, Randi Lampert, MD, FAAP, Chair of the Nevada AAP Immigrant Health Committee, penned an opinion piece that ran in the Las Vegas Sun title Universal COVID Care Benefits Us All.

A full thirty-six percent of Nevadan children have at least one parent who is an immigrant, one-third of whom are undocumented. Nevada AAP chapter members who care for these children are encouraged to utilize the American Academy of Pediatrics Immigrant Child Tool Kit which details unique screenings and other medical concerns for this population.

Talking with Teens About Suicide
For over 4 years, the Nevada AAP has led in-person Walk with a Doc events to encourage families to learn about pediatric health topics and then go for a walk with doctors in our community. Starting in April 2020, our chapter temporarily changed our monthly in-person Walk with a Doc events for the Las Vegas and Reno communities into one, state-wide virtual event the second Sunday of every month and a Spanish-language walk the third Sunday of every quarter.

The December 2020 Walk featured Dr. Lisa Durette, Program Director of the Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at UNLV School of Medicine, who gave a brief presentation on talking to teens and tweens about suicide. Please encourage the families you care for to watch the replay of this and all our virtual walks at NevadaAAP.org/walk-with-a-doc.

As many of you will be getting vaccinated in the coming days/weeks, the American Academy of Pediatrics is joining a campaign to raise visibility and promote positive messaging around getting the vaccine.

Please consider sharing photos of yourself or other team members getting vaccinated on the Nevada AAP Twitter feed. While nationwide polling seems to indicate a slight uptick in confidence with regard to the vaccine among the general public, an “I got the shot” type of campaign will reinforce and potentially grow that confidence among your patients and the public.

If you’re willing, get a pic when you are vaccinated and share it with me at LDMcAllister@aap.net - if you share it on your own social media channels, please tag @AAPNevada and use one or more of these hashtags:

Promoting Pediatric Primary Prevention (P4) Grants
The American Academy of Pediatrics is encouraging members to apply for one of 50 $10,000 grants to improve childhood vaccine coverage and well-child visits.

The P4 Challenge will award $1 million in prizes for innovative approaches to increase access to and utilization of well-child visits and/or immunizations services within primary care settings. Partnerships with state and local organizations are encouraged, and submissions must include a primary care provider who delivers health services to children. Nevada AAP members interested in collaborating with the Chapter on this opportunity should contact Leann McAllister at 508-685-0918.

Submissions will open on January 19 and close on March 15. Visit their website for more information and to sign up for updates.

New Nevada AAP Board
The new Nevada AAP Executive Committee will start their 2-year term on January 15, 2021. They are:

  • President: Vanessa Slots, MD, FAAP
  • Vice President/President Elect: Mitch Strominger, MD, FAAP
  • Secretary/Treasurer: Terence McAllister, MD, FAAP
  • Immediate Past President: Pam Greenspon, MD, FAAP

Only a small number of current Committee Directors who form our Board will keep their seats leaving lots of opportunities for new volunteers!

Our Chapter’s current roles and minimal Board requirements are posted on NevadaAAP.org/get-involved. We ask Board members to commit to attending quarterly virtual Board meetings as well as to commit to one deliverable each year. Deliverables can be large, grant-based projects, but they can also be as simple as writing a blog post or speaking at a Walk with a Doc event.

We know how busy our members are and are grateful for even a minimal commitment from our volunteers knowing that each deliverable contributes to improving pediatric outcomes in Nevada.
