Pediatric Updates, Opportunities, &
Events
Thursday, 11 March 2021 | Issue 35
Dear Nevada AAP Members,

Each and every day, our members work to improve pediatric outcomes in Nevada. Today I share just a few highlights of our Members' recent work as well as a few new opportunities for next steps to improve the health of all children in Nevada.

For my part, this week alone was full of virtual opportunities! On Monday and Tuesday, I attended the Nevada Health Conference to promote the CDC's Project Firstline, and yesterday and today, I've been virtually "tabling" at Children's Week at the Nevada Legislature to share our advocacy priorities for 2021 and beyond.

Thank you for being members of the Nevada AAP and for all you do for children in Nevada!

Be well,

Leann

UPDATES
Blog Update
Since our last email update, the Nevada AAP posted an article by Board Member Oriaku Kas-Osoka, MD, MEd, FAAP on her experience attending the virtual AAP National Conference last Fall.

Dr. Kas' article addresses inclusivity and adolescent sexual health in Nevada and has garnered more social-media impressions than any of our blog posts to date. It's a must read!

The Nevada AAP Blog gives Chapter Members an opportunity to take state-wide, national, and international health news and best practices, and focus it specifically on improving pediatric healthcare in Nevada. All chapter members are welcome to contribute!

"Reducing respiratory risk factors...is imperative for public safety."
Congratulations to Nevada AAP Board Member and E-cigarette Chapter Champion Jose Cucalon Calderon, MD, FAAP for the publication of a critical op-ed in The Nevada Independent.

Working with Nevada AAP advocacy partner The Children's Advocacy Alliance, Dr. Cucalon Calderon and his co-authors make a solid argument for banning smoking in Nevada casinos.

Dr. Cucalon Calderon is also actively working to improve the strength of Nevada's Tobacco 21 laws via AB59. More on that in the article on legislative activities further in this update.
Nevada must double down on clean casino air

Tobacco 21 became federal law in 2020, raising the minimum age to purchase tobacco products from 18 to 21. At the time, 33 states (not including Nevada) had already passed similar legislation. Attorney General Aaron Ford prefiled AB59 in advance...

Oral Health Handout for Families
Nevada AAP Chapter Oral Health Advocate Larry Hon, DMD has created a fun and informative handout for pediatricians to share with families that explains how to prevent cavities. Our favorite part is Dr. Hon's quote: "Slime and grime make the crime."

Pediatricians and families will find this and other resources on the "Families" page of our website: NevadaAAP.org/families.
New Immunization Representative
The Nevada AAP is almost entirely run by chapter members who volunteer their time and talents. This month we are thrilled to welcome UNLV medical student Crystal Oden to the volunteer role of Nevada AAP Immunization Representative.

Ms. Oden is already hard at work coordinating efforts with advocacy partners including Immunize Nevada. Nevada AAP members interested in supporting Ms. Oden's efforts or wanting to learn more about utilizing Immunize Nevada resources reach out directly to Ms. Oden at odenc2@unlv.nevada.edu.

The Nevada AAP is continuously seeking chapter members who want to volunteer for a leadership role. Visit NevadaAAP.org/get-involved to learn about our reasonable, minimal commitment we ask of our volunteers as well as view open roles currently in need of leadership.

We are about 6 weeks into the 81st (2021) Session of the Nevada Legislature and, although the Legislative Building is currently closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there are still lots of opportunities for pediatricians to add their voice on bills that impact the health of children in Nevada.

To date, the Nevada AAP has submitted only one bill exhibit, on AB59, but watch for more in the near future.

To learn more about how to virtually participate in the legislative session, utilize this infographic shared with attendees during Children's Week. Nevada AAP members are also welcome to schedule one-on-one advocacy training with Executive Director Leann McAllister. Contact her at 508-685-0918 or ED@NevadaAAP.org.
Rethink Your Drink, Nevada
Although primarily a resource for Nevada families, Rethink Your Drink, Nevada also has resource to help doctors stay current with research related to children’s nutritional health.

In addition, there are useful educational resources for medical and dental care offices to share with patients including tearsheets, posters, stickers, and 3D sugary drink models for you to download for free at RethinkYourDrinkNevada.com/Healthpros.
