UPDATES
Tobacco 21 Public Comment
Discussion about electronic cigarettes, vaping, and tobacco use were a priority at the June 17 Nevada Legislative Committee on Health Care meeting.

Nevada AAP submitted a written public comment in support of prohibiting the sale of e-cigarettes to minors younger than 21 years of age. The Nevada AAP also asked that current laws and regulations prohibiting the sale of tobacco and e-cigarettes to minors be vigorously enforced. Further, the Nevada AAP believes that candy and fruit flavored e-cigarettes and tobacco products, which encourage youth smoking initiation, should be banned at the state level.

The next interim Health Care committee meeting is scheduled for Thursday, July 23, 2020 at 9:00 AM and will be virtual. The agenda publishes on this website a few days before the meeting.
Clean Car Standards
The Nevada AAP was proud to be one of 65 organizations to co-sign this letter to Governor Sisolak advocating for Clean Car Standards rulemaking in Nevada.

Children are vulnerable to the adverse health effects from environmental hazards. The American Academy of Pediatrics has a long history of advocating for policies that address climate change. If you have a special interest in this topic, consider joining the Council on Environmental Health (COEH) at the AAP.

New Board Starts Jan 15, 2021 (2-Year Term)

Nevada AAP Board of Directors 2021 - 2022
Now is the time to start thinking about running for a leadership position on the Nevada AAP 2021 - 2022 Board of Directors.

The Nevada AAP is almost entirely run by members who volunteer their time and talents resulting in improved pediatric outcomes in Nevada and leadership skills for the volunteer. Our Board of Directors Leadership Policy is designed to accommodate the busy work lives of our members. We appreciate the time our volunteers give to improve pediatric outcomes in Nevada.

Current Board members are welcome to reapply for their current board seat or explore a new role that interests them. There are many opportunities for leadership as we often only have one candidate per role.

Per our Chapter Bylaws, the entire Nevada APP membership will be invited to vote for two positions if we have multiple nominations: Vice President and Secretary/Treasurer.
VAX Nevada Kids
The Nevada AAP is one of six leading advocacy groups to be the first to join Vax Nevada Kids, a state-wide collective of strong, pro-vaccine voices. Individuals and organizations can join on the website vaxnevadakids.org.

Vax Nevada Kids recognizes the long established, evidence-based science that vaccines are safe, effective, and save lives. We believe we have a shared responsibility to keep our communities healthy, ensure access to healthcare, increase Nevada’s vaccination rates, and decrease the risk of vaccine-preventable diseases.

Join the movement at vaxnevadakids.org.
Pop-Up Diaper Bank
Nevada AAP Chapter Member Jinsy Jacob, MD, FAAP asked that we alert members in Southern Nevada that, in response to the high unemployment rate, local nonprofit Baby's Bounty has added pop-up diaper banks.

Families in need of diapers can contact Baby's Bounty at 702-485-2229.

For nearly 12 years, Baby's Bounty has been providing babies in Las Vegas with essential baby supplies like clothing, car seat and diapers. Learn more at babysbounty.org.
Although we are all practicing "social distancing", there are still online opportunities to "get together" to network and learn together. We may be physically separated, but not emotionally or intellectually.
