Pediatric Updates, Opportunities &
Monday, 24 August 2020 | Issue 28
Dear Chapter Members,

Today my son starts virtual 11th grade at Palo Verde High School in Summerlin. Up in Reno, school has been postponed for days because of the dangers of smoke from the wildfires. Nevada Medicaid fees are being cut by 6% while their enrollment roles soar, and both national AAP and our chapter annual meeting will be virtual this October. It's a lot of new experiences and stressful, hard-to-predict outcomes.

Life always throws us curve balls, but I'm not embarrassed to tell you that these days I am fully embracing the concept of "it's okay not to be okay." One bright spot for me, though, through all of this has been our chapter. Our last chapter board meeting had a record number of attendees. In addition, many of you are putting in the work of writing articles, giving talks, advocating with legislators, supporting Nevada families, and speaking with the press. Your efforts inspire me. THANK YOU!

I hope you find these updates, opportunities, and events helpful in the work you do!

Be well,

Leann D. McAllister, Executive Director

Bias in Medicine
Thank you to Nevada AAP member Tricia Sellers, MD, FAAP for writing our latest chapter blog article. In the post, Dr. Sellers explores how both cognitive and implicit bias impact pediatric care. Click here to read the post.

Continuing on this theme, Dr. Sellers will also be our featured speaker at the Nevada AAP September virtual Walk with a Doc. Dr. Sellers will present a brief, kid-friendly talk about discussing bias with kids and then take questions live. Please encourage your families to join us! Learn more and download a flyer here.

This week we were lucky to have received two excellent blog posts. Look for a new post on our at the end of this week and a special notice in the next chapter newsletter. All Nevada AAP members are invited to submit blog posts for Executive Committee review for inclusion on our website.
Public Service Announcement
The Nevada AAP collaborated with the Nevada Dept. of Public Health, the Nevada State Medical Society, the Nevada Chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians, Immunize Nevada, and the Nevada Primary Care Association to create a Public Service Announcement to encourage all Nevadans to "See your doctor to stay healthy.”

The video is being played, in Spanish and English, online and on local TV. Please share these video links!

Nevada AAP Makes Public Comment
On August 13, the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services held a virtual public meeting to solicit comments on amendments to the state plan for Medicaid services fee schedule adjustments. Nevada Medicaid plans to cut 6% on fees paid, to physicians, hospitals and multiple other healthcare providers.

The Nevada AAP joined dozens of other voices, from the public and fellow advocacy groups alike, urging the state to rethink these devastating cuts.

Provider Relief Fund Deadline Extended
The deadline for pediatricians, pediatric medical subspecialists, and pediatric surgeons to apply for funds from the Medicaid and CHIP distribution has been extended to August 28.

In addition, on August 10, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) will reopen the Medicare-based General distribution to pediatricians and other providers who received an automatic payment in April but did not apply for a second payment by the initial June 3 deadline. These providers will now be able to apply for a second payment. Pediatricians are eligible for the same amount of funding from the Provider Relief Fund whether they access funding through the Medicare-based General Distribution or through the Medicaid and CHIP distribution.

Although we are all practicing "social distancing", there are still many online opportunities to "get together" to network and learn together. We may be physically separated, but not emotionally or intellectually.
