Demand for classes at all-time high -- your gift is needed today!

Student Services staff answering a phone call

Because of record-high interest levels, we need to increase student service support.

This summer, 250 community members expressed interest in Literacy Network's classes and tutoring programsthe highest ever to reach out during registration.

Because the demand for classes is great, we are raising $85,000 by September 12 to increase our capacity. Your gift today will be matched dollar for dollar, thanks to a generous offer from 2nd Market Capital Economic Opportunity Foundation.

Your gift will provide personalized, wraparound support to each individual who reaches out to enroll.

Pedro gets new job, advances a level in studies

Pedro (pictured here with instructor Bex) started taking Community English classes on Zoom in Fall 2020 and has participated in every semester since then. His goals were to get a job, to be able to socialize with his neighbors, and to make friends in the community.

After over a year of diligent studying, Pedro has gotten a job he enjoys at a bakery, made friends with coworkers, and moved from beginner- to intermediate-level English classes. Congratulations on your accomplishments, Pedro!

Students overwhelmingly happy with Literacy Network tutors and teachers

This summer, Literacy Network asked students to provide feedback on their experiences with our programs via a survey.

A total of 183 participants responded to the survey, and a summary of some of these results is shown here. We were thrilled and humbled to see 100% of respondents were happy with their teacher or tutor!

Survey results will be used to help inform our work moving forward. One change recommended that you may notice in some of our communications is a shift from using the term "learner" to "student," as recommended by survey participants. Other results will help in planning class offerings, increasing student involvement in decision making, and more.

A peek inside the classroom: Goodman South Library tour

Our Community English program works with community partners to make our classes possible. Many of these classes are online with a few in-person meetings.

Recently, students in Saturday's Beginner Community English class enjoyed an in-person session at Goodman South Public Library, a longstanding partner of our program. A librarian gave a tour of the library and students learned library vocabulary during the tour such as fiction and non-fiction, title, and author. They also learned about library resources available for them to use.

Glaucia: "Investing in Literacy Network is investing in humanity."

Longtime donor Glaucia video

Although she immigrated to the U.S. from Brazil over 50 years ago, Glaucia Pilarski still remembers how hard the transition was, especially because no one in her family spoke English. This personal experience helps her to feel a special connection to our English language classes and inspired her to become a Literacy Network supporter and monthly donor.
