The 2021 American Academy of Pediatrics Advocacy Conference started today with plenary sessions and workshops, to be followed with virtual visits tomorrow, and congressional appointments to meet with the house representatives and senators on Tuesday. There are 68 participants from California, including 23 members from our Chapter 2.
There are some signs of improvement seen recently in California regarding the present pandemic. COVID-19 vaccine administration rates for adults are increasing and hospital admissions are decreasing. Although these are all positive signs, we are still uncertain when normalcy will return. Children need healthcare, and we are there to provide them the best possible care under these circumstances.
We are continuing to take volunteers to form the Advocacy Committee in our chapter to plan and improve our advocacy efforts. Thank you to Cambria Garell, MD, FAAP of UCLA, and to Erin Nash Fairfax, PA-C, RN of Mission Pediatrics for signing up. If you wish to take an active part in that committee, please click here to sign up, or contact Tomas at chapter2@aapca2.org.
Our “American Academy of Pediatrics District IX Chapter 2” is listed as one of the not-for-profit organizations eligible to receive charitable donations under the smile.amazon.com website. Please read the information provided in this newsletter to learn more about how to sign up and choose to support our chapter. You may also encourage your family members and friends to do the same. When purchases are made through smile.amazon.com, a small donation goes to the chapter account from Amazon.
Claudia Wang, MD, FAAP, a pediatrician from UCLA and AAP-CA2 Member-At-Large is featured in this month's Member Spotlight (Thanks to our Editorial Board for the great work). Furthermore, we are continuing to feature the finalists of the 2021 Research Awards. This month we have Nivedita Keshav, a 4th year medical student at UCLA, and Connor Mitrovich, DO from CHLA. I hope to see more of you participate and make this part of the newsletter interesting, by submitting your personal narratives to be published. Please read the submission guidelines below and contact chapter2@aapca2.org for more information.
We have several opportunities for engagement this month. Members will be able to join early and participate in a virtual mixer via Zoom for some of these events. The first one will be on April 20th, hosted by our Area Representative in San Bernardino/High Desert, Dr. Akhil Sharma, with guest speaker Dr. Suresh Maggee who will speak about craniosynostosis. The second is on April 22nd on the "Impact of Secondary Trauma and Burnout, With a Blueprint for Wellness" - presented by Dr. Nirupama Madduri and Dr. Adwoa Osei. The third is on April 27, on "COVID: The Dynamics of Disease in Offices and Schools" , presented by Dr. Ken Zangwill. Please register below.
|
|
We are still collecting responses on the chapter-wide COVID-19 survey. Please participate so that we can gauge how things have evolved since May of last year. Click here to provide your input.
I also encourage you to look into all upcoming lectures mentioned on this newsletter, and watch the topics that may interest you.
Best wishes,
D. Rajasekhar, MD, FAAP

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is found to affect 1 in 59 children. The following are recommendations for pediatricians
|
|
- Timely diagnosis, early identification, and evidence-based intervention: AAP recommends screening at 18 and 24 months of age, and a referral to a specialist can be made based on the findings. Subspecialists may consider diagnostic assessments, such as genetic testing. Interventions may begin soon after, focusing on communication, behavior, and adaptive skills. Families should be an integral part of the treatment program.
- Collaboration of systems of care: Educational, medical, and behavioral interventions must be implemented to provide holistic care.
- Planning for adolescence and adult systems of care: Pediatricians may engage adolescents and their families in discussing transition plans.
-
Promotion of shared decision-making with individuals with ASD and their families
- Ongoing education of pediatric providers to provide a medical home for children and youth with ASD, to address co-existing medical concerns and provide support to families impacted by having a child with ASD.
- Support a national agenda for basic, clinical, and health services research about ASD
|
|
|
April is also Child Abuse Prevention Month
|
Pediatrician’s Role in Preventing Child Maltreatment
|
|
- Obtain a dynamic social history throughout a patient’s childhood
- Acknowledge that parenting can be frustrating at times and provide anticipatory guidance
- Assess the infant’s crying and provide strategies for managing, explaining the purpose of crying for an infant
- For families who have a child with disabilities, provide education and support, and also provide support for the siblings in the family
- Be mindful of signs of intimate partner violence and postpartum depression
- Provide guidance to parents for alternate methods of discipline and discourage corporal punishment
- Talk to parents about normal sexual development and discuss signs of sexual abuse
- Pediatricians should be a liaison to community resources for parents who are struggling
- Advocate for community programs and resources for education and prevention of child maltreatment
- Advocate for positive behavior interventions in the school
- Recognize signs and symptoms of child maltreatment and report to proper authorities.

Educational Opportunities
Updated ROR Training
Reach Out and Read has launched an updated core training that focuses on Early Relational Health. In addition to the one CME, the training now includes one MOC-2 credit to pediatricians. Providers will receive an MOC-2 certificate at the end of the training, which they can keep for their records. On a monthly basis, National will submit the providers’ details to the ABP accrediting board and send an email to providers letting them know their accreditation is complete. (Note this training is for providers that are currently ROR sites or have completed the Reach Out and Read site application.) Contact the ROR Program Coordinator at sscranton@aapca2.org or 909-709-1441 for more information.
Save the Date for PAS
This year, the Early Literacy SIG for the Pediatric Academic Society (PAS) meeting (the ROR SIG) will take place virtually on June 2nd, 11 AM- 1 PM CT. The SIG is a great way to connect with colleagues who work in academic settings who are interested in Reach Out and Read and related research.
