The Residency Corner has been featuring the finalists of the 2022 Research Awards. This month we have Dr. Divya Patel, a second-year pediatric resident at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Residency Program.

I want to thank the Chapter 2 delegates who represented District IX during the recent virtual congressional visits during the AAP Advocacy Conference, focusing on child mental health. You may see the details of that below.
Please welcome Cindy Little as our new, interim Reach Out and Read Inland Empire (RORIE) program coordinator. Cindy will be connecting with our RORIE sites to assist with any program needs, including training, reports and book ordering. This program is fully funded by First 5 Riverside and First 5 San Bernardino, providing free books for all well-child visits to children zero to five.

2022 AAP Advocacy Conference

Over 400 AAP members participated in the virtual AAP Advocacy Conference on March 20 and 21, concluding with virtual congressional visits on March 22. This year's focus on Capitol Hill was to urge congress to support youth mental and behavioral health, urging them to cosponsor two bipartisan, bicameral bills: the Supporting Children's Mental Health Care Access Act (H.R. 7076/ S.3864) and the Youth Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Act (H.R. 1803/ S.3628).

Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health Survey

AAP-CA2 is partnering with the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health to survey pediatric subspecialists in California about supporting families of children with chronic health conditions. Subspecialists will soon receive the brief, 5-minute survey on parent-to-parent support, the results of which will be used to inform the Foundation’s advocacy efforts addressing families’ medical and social needs as well as assist practices in meeting the needs of this population. A donation on behalf of the pediatric community will be made to Ronald McDonald House Charities for every completed survey. We encourage you to complete the survey as soon as you receive it.

Residency Corner - 2022 Research Awards

The AAP California Chapter 2 sent out a call for abstracts on scholarly projects by pediatric residents and medicine-pediatric residents from CHLA, Harbor-UCLA, Kaiser LA, Loma Linda, UCLA and USC; and medical students from the Southern California counties of Kern, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura. The accepted abstracts were showcased at the 2022 Advances in Pediatrics Symposium. We are thrilled to share with you the authors and their abstract each month.

CHLA | New Fellowship Program
|
|
The Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles Division of Orthopedics is now accepting applications for 2022-2023 for the inaugural Non-Operative Pediatric Orthopedic (NOPO) Fellowship.
There is an emerging new field of medicine, Non Operative Pediatric Orthopedics, in response to the growing need for pediatric musculoskeletal specialists to diagnose and treat many of the primarily non-surgical musculoskeletal conditions in children and adolescents.
This one-year fellowship will train candidates who have completed residency in Pediatrics, Family Medicine, or Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation to practice as specialists in non-operative pediatric musculoskeletal medicine. Fellow will be competent in the diagnosis and non-operative management of a variety of musculoskeletal conditions. Upon completion, graduates will gain employment in a busy pediatric orthopedic group with competitive income potential and with minimal to no call responsibilities.

The Immigrant Youth Task Force (IYTF) at UCLA and the American Academy of Pediatrics California Chapter 2 (AAP-CA2) invite you to visit The Los Angeles County Immigrant Youth Resource Toolkit, a website consolidating community resources in the greater LA area for immigrant youth and families.
