August is here, which means that the new school year is beginning for our patients and our own children. While this is a joyful time, it is also a time of stress for pediatricians professionally, and doubly so for the many pediatrician parents, grandparents, and other caregivers in our chapter. While COVID-19 cases have been increasing nationally for the past few weeks, the situation overall is much better than it was at the peak. We are fortunate that schools will be able to resume in-person with fewer restrictions than were needed previously.

The AAP held its Annual Leadership Conference last week at its headquarters in Itasca, Illinois. I was inspired by the stories of chapter leaders in other states who are standing up for children on a variety of issues including vaccination, transgender care, gun safety, and reproductive health. I was also shocked to hear their stories of being threatened and harassed because of their advocacy on behalf of children.
Moved by these stories, conference attendees voted that the top resolution be “that the Academy develop and promote a confidential intervention resource for pediatrician advocates who are acutely experiencing stress, threats of violence, and/or public attacks, to expedite connections to appropriate academy, peer, and/or local resources.”
The adoption of this resolution caused me to reflect on the contributions made by California Chapter 2 pediatricians in advocating for children during the pandemic, sometimes facing significant adversity. Chapter 2 stands ready to work with national AAP on the implementation of this resolution, and to support our pediatricians who are publicly speaking out on behalf of children in the current and any future public health crises. The AAP should be a supportive home for your professional and advocacy activities.
I would like to welcome our new chapter members and encourage them to get involved by joining a chapter committee. Information about our committees and other resources are available on our website, aapca2.org. Your support makes the work of this chapter possible!
Our member spotlight this month features Dr. Mia Lagunda, a pediatrician and medical director practicing at Clinica Sierra Vista in Bakersfield.
Some other highlights of this month’s newsletter include:
I hope you have a wonderful month!
Best wishes,
Grant Christman, MD, MACM, FAAP

Dear Residents… We want to highlight you in our newsletter!
Since the new academic year has started, we are reaching out to invite trainees to contribute an article to our AAPCA2 monthly newsletter to be published in an upcoming month. The AAPCA2 Newsletter Editorial Board will help to review and edit all submissions prior to publication.
The AAPCA2 Newsletter Residency Corner is dedicated to highlighting resident voices and providing an opportunity to find peer connections across residency programs in the chapter. It is a space for residents to publish articles on their topics of interest. Submissions from all areas are welcome, including sharing ideas to stay socially connected during residency, describing personal hobbies or passions, highlighting resident research or QI projects, describing advocacy efforts, or providing advice and perspective on transitions during residency.
We ask that you please distribute this call for articles to the residents in your program. Please see the general submission formatting requirements on the website. You can also look at examples of past submissions and pass this information along to your residents!

Manuscript | Domestic Violence Crisis in Ventura County
|
|
Jupneet Singh is currently a rising senior at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), a resident of Ventura County, and a graduate of Rio Mesa High School (Class of 2019). She has volunteered at the Ventura County Family Justice Center (VCFJC) since September 2020 and founded a program called Pathways to Promise, which is an educational and vocational mentorship program for children affected by domestic violence. While running this program, COVID-19 was an obstacle that had to be overcome. So, she wanted to analyze how COVID-19 has affected the domestic violence crisis in Ventura County overall. Originally published in The American Surgeon, and accessible via PubMed, click below to access.
This research study was conducted on the last 2 years of VCFJC client data, which she worked with while she volunteered there.
Jupneet would like to thank Dr. Thomas K. Duncan, Ventura County Medical Center Trauma Director, and Joyce Donehue, her supervisor at the VCFJC, for their continued guidance and support throughout this process. She would also like to thank Dr. Landon for making her aware of the wonderful communities (like AAP!) bringing awareness to important public health issues in Ventura County.
