Congratulations to us!! The National AAP just notified us that we have won the 2015 Award of Chapter Excellence for a Very Large Chapter! This will be awarded to us at the upcoming Joint District Meeting in the summer. As previous winners of the 2014 Award of Chapter Excellence for a Very Large Chapter, this makes it two years in a row!!!  Hooray us :-)
Congratulations to our AAP-CA2 secretary, Chris Landon, MD, FCCP, CDM, FAAP for having three abstracts accepted for presentation at the 2016 American Thoracic Society International Conference to be held in San Francisco in May, 2016.
San Bernardino Area Representative, Damodara Rajasekhar, MD, FAAP hosted a Town Hall meeting in Victorville with 21 in attendance, including one of our Riverside Area Representatives, Tim Watson, MD, FAAP. The guest speaker was Dr. Manoj Shah, who spoke on Pediatric Epigastric Pain. Please see the photos below, including specific details from this informative event.
One of the physicians at the Victorville Town Hall Meeting had a request of the Academy regarding the approach to parents using marijuana. From that conversation, we now have the late resolution, LR-3, Pediatric Guidance Regarding Parental Marijuana Use. This will be in addition to our district's other 23 resolutions of the now 135 presently scheduled to be debated at the 2016 Annual Leadership Forum. We appreciate all the enthusiasm and hard work that went into this process. There were a variety of topics presented, which should make for some lively discussions.
Our next Town Hall will be held in Woodland Hills on February 24, hosted by Ken Saul, MD, FAAP.
Regarding our 27th Annual Southern California Postgraduate Conference, Advances In Pediatrics 2016, at the Universal Sheraton, to be held on April 16, 2016.  Registration will soon be OPEN! Please keep an eye on your inbox and be sure to take advantage of our Early Bird registration, which will be through Monday, March 14, 2016.
We have an exciting addition to our conference line. Alisa Dennis, Ph.D., Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Mindfulness Consultant, who will provide an optional, complimentary pre-conference non-CME session entitled, "Mindfulness in the Morning." She will begin the session with simple tai chi warm-up exercises followed by a guided mindfulness meditation and closing with Q&A. Please scroll down to read her full biography and the description of this session.
As always, I welcome your comments and suggestions.

Foreign body aspiration events in children account for over 17,000 emergency room visits per year, and over 200 pediatric deaths annually in the United States alone.  The majority of these events occur in children ages 10-36 months.  While toys and toy parts are often a choking -risk concern for parents and caregivers, food items are more common than non-food items as a source of choking in young children.
Seeds and nuts are the most common food object overall, and peanuts are the most common legume. Hot dogs, raw carrots, whole grapes, and gelatinous candies are the most common causes of fatal choking episodes in children under age 14 years Read more...  Bio
