American Academy of Pediatrics California Chapter 2
2023 - February Edition
|
|
Grant Christman, MD, MACM, FAAP
|
|
I would like to thank all our members who attended the Ventura County social event last week. Special thanks go to Dr. Melissa Ruiz, our chapter Vice-President, for hosting! The event was very well-attended, and I appreciated the opportunity to meet pediatricians in Ventura practicing in a variety of settings. They shared their successes in providing outstanding care for their patients, as well challenges they are currently facing.
|
|
We were also fortunate to have state Senator Monique Limón in attendance; she met with chapter members and spoke about her commitment to supporting child health and well-being in the state legislature.
The next chapter social event will be held on April 29 in Kern County. You can RSVP in the upcoming events section below. Please email Tomas at [email protected] if you have any ideas for an event or would like to host with the chapter’s support.
The new legislative season in Sacramento is here, and the Chapter 2 Advocacy Committee is working together with AAP leaders from the other three California chapters to identify bills that we will support together. In our recent advocacy survey, chapter members identified their top priorities for state-level advocacy for the coming year, the top three being mental health, child poverty, and childcare. Check out this month’s edition of The Quorum, in which Chapter 2 legislative analyst Dr. Kamaal Jones takes an in-depth look at the childcare crisis precipitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. He highlights important childcare bills introduced into the legislature by Senator Limón and Assembly Majority Leader Gómez Reyes.
In this month’s newsletter, we also welcome William Barboza to the Chapter 2 team as our new administrative assistant.
The Member Spotlight features Parul Bhatia, MD, FAAP, a general pediatrician and medical educator at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
The Resident Corner features the Call for Abstracts for the Advances in Pediatrics Symposium.
I would like to welcome our new chapter members and encourage them to get involved by joining a chapter committee. Information about our committees and other resources are available on our website, aapca2.org. Your support makes the work of this chapter possible!
Some other highlights and upcoming events in this month’s newsletter include:
- March 8 | Dr. Ken Saul's Town Hall in Woodland Hills
- March 21 | First 5 San Luis Obispo Town Hall
-
March 26-28 | AAP Advocacy Conference in Washington DC
- April 18th | Virtual Life After Residency/Career Fair
- April 29 | AAP-CA2 Social in Kern County
- May 20 | AAP-CA2 Advances in Pediatrics Symposium at UCLA
I hope you have a wonderful month!
Best wishes,
Grant Christman, MD, MACM, FAAP

New Year's Resolution: Write a Resolution!
John I. Takayama, MD, MPH, FAAP
Chapter Forum Management Committee District IX Representative
Yes, it’s time again to think about writing a resolution to ask the Academy to advocate to “change the system!”
- Pick an issue that you are passionate about. Last year’s top resolution, voted on by chapter, committee, section and council leaders at the annual leadership conference, was on “developing resources for pediatricians in advocacy roles who were experiencing stress, threats of violence and/or public attacks.”
- Search for past resolutions (see below) to make sure that you don’t end up writing something that has already been approved.
-
Collaborate with others to make this a team effort; it’s less effort and more fun that way. The national deadline for submission is April 1, 2023.
Download the 2023 resolution template to begin a draft of your resolution. Look for past resolutions in the searchable database. Read the guidelines (everything you always wanted to know) to understand the details of writing a resolution; or if you prefer just the main points, look at the infographic. The resolution video is another way to learn how to do this. Finally, if you have any questions, please contact me, John Takayama, MD, MPH, FAAP, at [email protected]; I am your District Representative to the Chapter Forum Management Committee and can help guide you through the process!

Recent Event | Ventura Social
|
|
Pediatricians, pediatric subspecialists, mental health providers and their families attended the recent Chapter 2 social at the residence of AAP-CA2 Vice President Dr. Melissa Ruiz. The afternoon was filled with discussions surrounding advocacy, practice management and mental health referrals. Special Guest and a member of the California State Legislature for seven years (and member of the Health Committee throughout that time) Senator Monique Limón (19th District/Santa Barbara and Ventura) engaged in rich conversations, opening doors to collaboration on present and future bills.
|
|
"As the mother of a 27 month-year-old child, I want to express my admiration and appreciation for what you do in helping guide, not only parents, but also children", expressed Sen. Limón. "I am very grateful for all of you convening and creating this space where we can come together; where you really let us policy makers know the direction you think we should go"
Monique Limón, Senator - 19th District
