2022 - March Edition
President's Message
D. Rajasekhar, MD, FAAP
March 11, 2022, marked two years since the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic. During this period many of us learnt how to live through difficult times. I hope that there will be less problems because of COVID-19 this year. Daylight Saving Time began today and the spring starts next weekend on the 20th. I wish you all a pleasant and happy spring season.
The term for the current AAP-CA2 board of directors ends in June. Elections for the new board will take place in May. Please see below for the board interest form and let us know if you are interested in serving for the 2022-2024 term. You may also nominate someone.

I would like to welcome our new chapter members and encourage them to make use of the resources available on our website, aapca2.org
Our Member Spotlight features Dr. Eyal Ben-Isaac, pediatrician at CHLA. I hope to see more of you participate and make this part of the newsletter interesting, by submitting your personal narratives to be published.

The Residency Corner will be featuring the finalists of the 2022 Research Awards. This month we have Dr. James Thomason, who won first place and was selected as an oral presenter for our annual symposium this past February.

The Life After Residency/Career Fair was held this past March 8th via Zoom. I want to thank Xiao “Ben” Wang, MD, MPH, FAAP for his insightful presentation that not only included career strategies, but also a strong focus on personal wellness for work/life balance.

Have you joined our Open Office Hours? The LA County Department of Public Health in collaboration with AAP-CA2 has been hosting the COVID-19 Vaccine, Pediatrician and Family Medicine Info Hours every Tuesday at 5 PM. All members are invited to participate in these sessions. Note that these sessions will now be held every two weeks.

Together we need to defeat the 2022 MICRA initiative called FIPA (Fairness for Injured Patients Act). FIPA, if it passes, will increase the cost of healthcare in California. It will also increase frivolous lawsuits, health insurance premiums for patients, and malpractice insurance premiums for physicians and hospitals. We can’t let that happen. Support CMA and CALPAC to defeat FIPA. This message is a reminder.

Are you interested in improving e-cigarette/vaping screening? Please consider signing up for UCLA's QI project, led by Dr. Denise Nuñez. The project will require a minimum of three PDSA cycles and will offer CME and MOC part 4. Please see below for details.

If you missed any of the most recent webinars, you may watch the recordings by following the links provided in the Recent Events section below.

Best wishes,
D. Rajasekhar, MD, FAAP

Chapter Elections 2022 - 2024
Board of Directors Nomination Interest Form

It’s time to develop the slate of officers and directors for the AAP-CA2 2022-2024 term.

The AAP-CA2 Board of Directors consists of an Executive Board: President, Vice President (Transitions to President on the following term), Treasurer, and Secretary, plus Members-At-Large and Area Representatives. Elections take place every two years. Members-At-Large act as liaison between the membership in their geographic area and the Board. To this end, they should be in contact periodically with the membership in their area to allow the members a chance to voice their needs, problems and concerns. Area Representatives are appointed by the Chapter president.

There are several opportunities for involvement. Please take a moment to advise us of your interest in running for the elected positions, as well as the names of others you think may be interested or whose interest should be encouraged. Please note, those candidates selected to run for Executive Board positions will be expected to make a short statement during a special event broadcast to our members as a webinar via Zoom in April. Voting will take place in May.
AAP-CA2 Advances in Pediatrics 2022 Symposium
We would like to thank everyone for making the annual symposium a great success despite COVID restrictions. We are grateful to the fabulous speakers for sharing their experience, knowledge and wisdom; to the in-person attendees for being a part of our transition to normalcy from isolation in a pandemic; and to the virtual attendees for joining via Zoom and engaging with the audience via your questions and comments in the chat.
This event was made possible through a generous grant from the UCLA Child and Family Health Leadership Training Program.
AAP CA-2 2022 Symposium Highlights
By Niru Madduri, MD, FAAP

After two years of virtual meetings, conferences, and gatherings, a hybrid AAP symposium offered us an opportunity to attend in person as others participated on Zoom. The Luskin Conference Center at UCLA was a beautiful and convenient venue, accommodating to the technological needs which arose in the last two years. Read more...
While the Symposium Pearls are part of the MOC Part 2 requirement for symposium attendees only, anyone may access them to learn the highlights and takeaway points of each presentation.
Climate Change Research Study
On behalf of fellow pediatricians and the University of Pittsburgh, we are inviting you to participate in a research survey to learn more about the opinions and practices of pediatricians and pediatric providers regarding discussion of climate change within pediatric clinical settings

This study includes a 5-minute online IRB-approved survey to report your opinions on discussing the health effects of climate change with patients and families. Following the survey, you will have a chance at one of twenty $50 Amazon gift cards. Chances of being chosen are expected to be approximately 1 in 20. In a second survey, you will be asked to enter personal contact information. This is only to contact you if you are chosen to receive a gift card and will not be linked to your first survey answers.

Participation is voluntary. If you are interested, please follow this link to the survey: https://pitt.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_eSdQQLrBQg0MWhg
For questions, you may contact the study coordinator, Erin Mickievicz (mickieviczee@upmc.edu), or the principal investigator from the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Maya Ragavan (ragavanm@chp.edu). Thank you so much for considering and we are so deeply grateful to learn from your expertise!

In reflecting on my journey to medical school, I realized that it was the field of pediatrics that drew me to medicine, rather than the other way around. I have always loved working with children and knew early on that my career would be focused on this special population. What I didn’t know was which field of service would be right for me. Read more

Chapter Immunizations Champion Resources
Candace M. Gragnani, MD, MPH, FAAP
AAP-CA2 Immunizations Champion
Dear Immunizers,

The AAP is working to improve their web pages on COVID-19 vaccination implementation in practices. To do this, we are seeking some best practices related to administering the COVID-19 vaccine. Some examples of best practices we seek:
·         Strategies for minimizing disruption to practice during 15 minute wait time after vaccine
·         How to reduce missed opportunities to vaccinate
·         Other practices that allow for the smooth implementation of COVID-19 vaccination in your practice
Please send your best practices to Katie Milewski, MPH at kmilewski@aap.org.
Katie is the program manager of Childhood Immunization Practice Improvement
at the American Academy of Pediatrics.
