President's Message
I hope you are having a great start to March, staying dry as much as possible and surviving the transition to daylight savings time. At a recent meeting of AAP chapter leaders, I was encouraged to hear reports that COVID-19 hospitalizations in children continue to decline and are at one of the lowest levels since the pandemic began.
|
|
At the same time, the pediatric mental health crisis continues to be a challenge and is now being exacerbated by the shortage of stimulant medications for children with ADHD. AAP national leaders have been meeting with leadership of the FDA to advocate for action to alleviate these shortages. The AAP federal Advocacy Conference in Washington, D.C. will be happening on March 26 – 28. No doubt the medication shortages and other mental health issues will be center stage during this meeting and in our conversations with legislators. Many thanks to those chapter members who registered for the conference and will be advocating on behalf of children with our federal representatives!
In this month’s edition of the Quorum, Dr. Kamaal Jones, Chapter 2 legislative analyst, discusses another drug-related mental health crisis: the rising frequency of fentanyl-related overdoses and deaths. Dr. Jones shares important data related to the crisis and discusses legislative efforts to address it at the state level, including bills to promote opioid prevention and treatment strategies in schools, to ensure that schools have doses of Narcan available, and to hold social media companies accountable for the sale of fentanyl products.
On a lighter note, the next chapter social event will be held on April 29 in Kern County. You can RSVP in the upcoming events section below. Our goal is to host an in-person event in every county of the chapter by the end of the year!

Note: The deadline to submit a resolution to AAP-CA2 for chapter support consideration is March 27th. You may submit your resolutions for consideration to [email protected] by midnight on 3/27/23.
What’s a resolution?
Every year, chapter members can submit a “resolution” to the Academy (national AAP) to advocate for change - to improve the health and well-being of children, youth and families; to support pediatricians; and to make AAP a better organization. LC (Leadership Conference) resolutions are reviewed, approved and prioritized by leaders of chapters, sections, councils and committees, at the annual Leadership Conference which will take place in August 2023.

In Case You Missed It: Amid a rapidly evolving online health information ecosystem, the American Academy of Pediatrics is excited to announce the launch of the Pediatric Digital Response Hub (PDRH).
This online space is for pediatricians, children’s health advocates, and AAP-affiliates who use social media to promote health information and address misinformation. Through resource-sharing and discussion, we will use the hub to explore and share best practices for both rapid-response and long-term messaging. We’ll start the hub activity around COVID-19 vaccination especially for children under 5.

Dr. Catherine Karr is a pediatrician, environmental epidemiologist, and research to practice leader in children’s environmental health, and professor of Pediatrics and Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences at the University of Washington. She is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Epidemiology. Her research program has a special focus on the adverse consequence of exposure to air pollutants on child health. She received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) in 2017 and was profiled the Lancet in 2018 for her accomplishments. |

Sophia Yen, MD, MPH is the CEO and Co-Founder of Pandia Health, birth control delivery. With more than 20 years of experience in medicine, she is board-certified in Adolescent Medicine. She graduated with a B.S. from MIT, M.D. from UCSF Medical School, and M.P.H. from UC Berkeley in Maternal Child Health. She serves as a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Adolescent Medicine at Stanford Medical School.

University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, where she obtained her M.D. and was elected to the AOA honor society. She then moved to L.A. with her husband where she did her pediatric residency at CHLA. She currently lives in the Pacific Palisades with her husband and three children.

Los Angeles County Department of Public Health invites you to join our information session intended for pediatric providers. Our next session is scheduled Tuesday, April 4th at 5pm. In addition to new DPH updates, guest speaker Gina Johnson, MD will be sharing Northeast Valley Health Corporation’s experience implementing motivational interviewing (MI) to increase COVID-19 vaccination coverage among their patients. MI has a broad range of applications and has been used successfully to approach positive behavior change.

VPDCP Corner
Vaccine Preventable Diseases Control Program
The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices met last week and presented some preliminary vaccine effectiveness data for respiratory viruses this winter. Summaries below:
Flu: The CDC shared preliminary data on influenza vaccine effectiveness for children 6 months to 17 years of age using the New Vaccine Surveillance Network, which gathers data from seven Children’s Hospitals. Flu vaccine effectiveness against laboratory confirmed Influenza from September 13, 2022 to January 25, 2023 was 68% (95% CI 46-81%) against hospitalizations and 42% (95% CI 25-56%) against ED visits. Vaccine effectiveness was similar for both H3N2 and H1N1 Influenza A.
RSV: Several vaccine products are being evaluated by the FDA, including a long-acting monoclonal antibody, Nirsevimab. Once approved, this product may be recommended for infants under 8 months of age during their first RSV season. This product was 79% (95% CI 68.5-86.1%) effective at preventing medically attended RSV lower tract respiratory infection and 80.6% (95% CI 62.3-90.1%) effective at preventing hospitalization due to RSV. Discussion focused on the importance of ensuring this medication will be available for all infants through a mechanism similar to the Vaccine For Children program.
COVID-19: Preliminary estimates were shared regarding vaccine effectiveness for Pfizer and Moderna products against symptomatic infection for 3-5 year olds. Three doses of Pfizer was 31% (95% CI 7-49%) effective against symptomatic infection for 3-4 year olds. Two doses of Moderna was 60% (95% CI 49-68%) effective against symptomatic infection with COVID-19 for 3-5 year olds.

The Spin to Save Kids! Challenge, organized by the Institute for Advanced Clinical Trials for Children (I-ACT) is the inaugural nationwide challenge that takes place through March 2023. Local communities, associations and organization across the country will gather and participate in various challenges—spinning balls, tops, tire swings, and other creative ways to call attention to the disparities and inequities in children’s pharmaceutical development and approval.
