Welcome to our Mother's Day Chapter Newsletter. Happy Mother's Day to all Mothers!

It's been a busy April for the Chapter. On April 9th and 10th I was part of the AAP Leadership Delegation who flew into Washington D.C. for Federal Advocacy. We joined the attendees from AAP Legislative Conference. Our Advocacy topic was Gun Violence and Prevention. After a training session, over 400 pediatricians descended onto Capitol Hill Legislators' Offices to discuss the impact of Gun Violence on children, and advocate for sensible gun legislation. We had a delegation of 18 pediatricians who met with both Senators Kamila Harris, and Diane Feinstein's office. We told stories of how gun violence has affected mental and physical health of these children and their families. Both Senators are very concerned about gun violence and support legislation to help curb the rising gun violence particularly on children. On April 11th, Dr Melissa Ruiz, Dr. Leila Yonessi, and I were part of a panel for the California Head Start Convention in Anaheim. The panel discussed ways that the Head Start Program and Pediatricians can collaborate together to ensure children are getting their appropriate health care. The Chapter and the Los Angeles Head Start Program will be working together to facilitate communications between Pediatricians and Head Start Providers.

On April 20th, I was the Keynote Speaker for the Riverside Office of Education Head Start Family Engagement Conference which was attended by over 80 parents . My topic was Childhood in the 21st Century: Challenging Times and Challenging Behaviors. The theme of the conference was based on the book " All the Wonderful Things You Can Be" by Emily Winfield Martin. The best part of the Conference was experiencing the meaningful and powerful impact Head Start has on these children and parents. Head Start does truly

allow a child to blossom into " All the Wonderful Things You Can Be".

On April 27th we had our AAP-CA2 Symposium Reception which provided attendees a wonderful opportunity to meet with the speakers individually, network with fellow Pediatricians, and Chapter leadership.

On April 28th our Pediatric Symposium had a dynamic line up of speakers including Melinda Braskett, Michael Brady, Buzz Land, Mark Del Monte, Alice Kuo, Paula Whiteman and Ed Curry. Our Chapter Symposium is unique because we weave the usual medical topics with topics of wellness, and advocacy along with poster session presentation which included both residents and medical students. It was fantastic to see the clinical research and projects in which our next generation of Pediatricians are involved. Our Chapter Symposium was a wonderful day of learning, networking, and comradery. I would like to thank all the speakers, symposium committee members, residents, medical students and Tomas who made this symposium so successful. Most importantly, I would like to thank all the attendees for their support of the Symposium and Chapter. For those who couldn't attend, hopeful you can join us next year.

April was a busy, exciting, educational, and rewarding month for the Chapter. Now May has arrived so we need you to vote for Chapter Leadership elections.

As I sign off, another shout out to all the mothers - you are all very special so have a Happy Mother's Day!

On the evening of April 27, 2018, the AAP-CA2 held a lovely networking reception supported by Abbott Nutrition. In attendance were many of the chapter officers, speakers, residents and guests.

The following morning, April 28, 2018, attendees gathered at the Sheraton Universal Hotel Grand Ballroom for a daylong event of learning and networking.

Voting Fellows should have received their election ballot in their email inbox on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at noon. Please be sure to check your SPAM folder if you did not receive it.

In that email you will find the election ballot for the AAP-CA2 BOD's elected positions of Members-at-Large, Secretary, Treasurer, and Vice President (President-elect).

The AAP-CA2 BOD is comprised of the elected positions of the Executive Board (President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Immediate Past President) and Members-at-Large as well as the appointed positions of Area Representatives. The Vice President also serves as President-elect, transitioning into the role of President for the following term for institutional memory. Dr. Alice Kuo, the current AAP-CA2 vice president, will assume the role of AAP-CA2 president in June, 2018 at the conclusion of the June BOD meeting. The AAP-CA2 president, Dr. Ed Curry, then moves into the position of immediate past president.

The AAP-CA2 Nominating Committee is formed of the last 3 past presidents, with the immediate past president serving as chair of the committee. I would like to thank Dr. Helen DuPlessis and Dr. Laura Mabie for their invaluable help and assistance with choosing our fabulous slate of nominees.

Highlights from Pediatric Trainees at the Annual Advances in Pediatrics Symposium

At the annual AAP-CA Chapter 2 Advances in Pediatrics Symposium, pediatric trainees were invited for the second year to learn besides practicing community pediatricians. This year, for the first time, medical students were invited to participate and submit abstracts for the poster session. There were five selected medical student authored posters presented alongside the six selected resident authored posters.

The award recipients for top posters this year included Alexandra Colt from the Keck School of Medicine at USC with her poster titled "Educational Intervention to Improve the Sleep Behavior and Well-Being of Students," Dr. Sneha Chintamaneni from Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles with "Exposure to Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors in Pregnancy and the Risk of Low Birth Weight and Congenital Cardiac Malformation," and Dr. Lisa Gantz from the UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital with her project on the "Interdisciplinary Efforts to Enhance Trauma-Informed Legal Services for Unaccompanied Immigrant Children at the Texas-Mexico Border." I had the honor of serving as this year's oral presenter, sharing my scholarly work on "A Pilot Symbiotic Shadowing Program for Pediatric Residents and Undergraduate Premedical Students."

As the resident representative to AAP-CA Chapter 2, I am looking ahead to creating additional opportunities for pediatric trainees to get involved more broadly within the AAP. Stay tuned for future advocacy highlights from trainees and a "Life after Residency" evening event in the fall for senior pediatric residents.

AAP-CA Legislative Day Advocacy

On Tuesday, April 3rd, the AAP-CA held its annual Legislative (Leg) Day in Sacramento.

Twenty-three attendees representing the four AAP-CA chapters, including chapter leaders, residents, and State Government Affairs Committee Members convened at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in their Club Room, to then proceed to the State Capitol to meet with Assemblymembers and State Senators. Several attendees brought their children to participate in this yearly event.

In The Community

April 10 in Westwood

Harvey Karp, MD, FAAP invited Chapter 2 members to an evening of professional development and networking at Napa Valley Grille, in Westwood.

AAP-CA2 Treasurer Cori Cross, MD, FAAP kicked-off the evening welcoming attendees and providing an overview of the extensive advocacy efforts carried out by the Chapter at the State level to represent children and pediatricians.

Dr. Karp's presentation, Calming Reflex - A Strategy to Boost Sleep, Soothe Colic and Prevent Postpartum Depression and SUID was compelling, paralleled with substantial data, and even reinforced by an impromptu Calming Reflex provided to a crying baby in the audience. Dr. Karp showcased his revolutionary SNOO Smart Sleeper, a bassinet scientifically designed to provide his popular 5 S's soothing techniques.

April 18, in Los Angeles

Local pediatricians gathered at Taix French Restaurant in Los Angeles for the sixth Town Hall on "Best Practices in Developmental Screening - An Inside Look", sponsored by First 5 LA.

Leslie Richard, MD, FAAP, medical director at Lanterman Regional Center provided an overview of the most used screening tools, eligibility criteria, Early Start and Regional Center processes.

Dr. Richard mentioned that 11 - 20% of children have a behavioral or emotional disorder. Furthermore, even when a child is well known in a pediatric practice, only 50% of those with clinically significant behavioral and emotional problems are detected.

Guest speaker Dr. Mandy Moradi, a clinical psychologist in private practice and a clinical consultant at Frank D. Lanterman Regional Center, presented the most effective ways of helping patients with accessing the services they need (Applied Behavioral Analysis, ST/OT/PT, social skills, transition skills, and service coordination).

This event was made possible by a generous grant from First 5 LA.

April 19, in San Bernardino

First 5 Hosts Town Hall with AAP-CA2 for Week of the Young Child

In observance of the Week of the Young Child, created by the National Association for Education of Young Children (NAEYC), First 5 San Bernardino hosted a Town Hall to facilitate a deep discussion on Early Learning among several organizations within the Inland Empire. The main topics were developmental screening methodologies, examining the milestones and quality health of children to thrive in early education stages and beyond. The event was a great success with over 50 attendees, all with one thing in common: a tremendous passion for children.

Among the presenters were (1) Edward Curry, MD, FAAP, AAP-CA2 President; (2) Karen Scott, First 5 San Bernardino Executive Director; (3) Elliot Weinstein, MD, FAAP, AAP-CA2 Past President and current First 5 San Bernardino Commissioner; and (4) Marti Baum, MD, FAAP, AAP-CA2 State Government Affairs Representative and Medical Director of Community Health Development at Loma Linda University.

Advocating for Immigrant Children: Join the AAP-CA2 Immigrant Health Initiative!

Join the AAP-CA2 chapter Immigrant Health Initiative (IHI)! The IHI

will be a dynamic local network for advocacy, education and mentorship for chapter members caring for our diverse immigrant children. We will also partner with the national AAP Immigrant Health Special Interest Group to engage in national advocacy campaigns and share resources for promoting immigrant health.
