I would like to welcome our new chapter members and encourage them to make use of the resources available on our website, aapca2.org
We are continuing to take volunteers to form the Advocacy Committee in our chapter to plan and improve our advocacy efforts. Danielle Shaw, MD, MS, FAAP, a pediatrician and child and adolescent psychiatrist in Camarillo is featured in this month's Member Spotlight. Furthermore, we are continuing to feature the finalists of the 2021 Research Awards. This month we have Paige Kingston, a 3rd year medical student at USC, and Isabel Sunshine, a 2nd year medical student at USC. I hope to see more of you participate and make this part of the newsletter interesting, by submitting your personal narratives to be published. Please read the submission guidelines below and contact [email protected] for more information.
The Candidates for National AAP President Elect, District IX Chairperson and Vice Chairperson have been selected. Voting for these candidates will be from August 25, 2021 to September 8, 2021. Please read their bios in the elections section below.
Our Chapter received the 2020 AAP Award of Chapter Excellence on May 6 in recognition for its accomplishments during the 2020 calendar year. We would like to thank you, our members, for your loyalty as we advocate for children, pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists, bringing you opportunities for engagement and professional development.
During the awards ceremony, three of our Chapter 2 members received AAP Special Achievement Awards in recognition for their accomplishments. I would like to congratulate Alice Kuo, MD, PhD, FAAP; Chris Landon, MD, FAAP, FCCP, CDM; and Nava Yeganeh, MD, MPH, FAAP. They all showed sustained interest and participated in one or more activities of our chapter, over and above that is expected by the membership at large. Please see the details below.
We have two opportunities for engagement this month. May 18 is the Early Career Pediatricians Town Hall, and May 27 is session 2 of the Infection Prevention and Control Series: SARS-CoV-2 Virus Dynamics, Host Immune Response and Vaccines, presented by Ishminder Kaur, MD, FAAP. This session will open at 6 PM for a Virtual Mixer. Please register below.
If you missed any of the most recent webinars, you may watch the recordings (Links provided in the Recent Events section below). I also encourage you to look into all upcoming lectures mentioned in this newsletter, and watch the topics that may interest you.
I have two very important informational items for your attention:
-
Please watch THIS VIDEO to learn about the 2022 ballot initiative called FIPA (Fairness for Injured Patients Act). If this initiative were to pass, it would raise the MICRA cap to $1.2 million and tie it to inflation, create a new category of damages with essentially no definition and no award cap, and would allow a physician’s personal assets to be seized in a judgement against them. The end result of this would be significantly increased insurance premiums for Californians and decreased access to providers for MediCal patients.

Celebrating the Mothers in Our Chapter
Pallavi Kamra, MD, FAAP
Being pediatricians and mothers, our two worlds intersect and overlap constantly. However, many pediatrician mothers will tell you that being a parent is by far the most challenging role they have had to play. In honor of Mother’s Day this year, we wanted to celebrate the pediatricians who are mothers in our Chapter. We had a conversation with five local area pediatricians and asked them to share their thoughts and wishes with us. Here’s what they had to say… Continue reading

By Aditi Mhaskar, MD, FAAP and Priyanka Fernandes, MBBS, MPH
You are finishing a physical form for your patient in high school. Her mom exchanges small talk about COVID-19 being such a disaster, and how they are looking forward to the end of it. “Yes,” agrees the teenager with cutting pessimism. “Then, we will only have to worry about climate change and fires again.”
Over the last 40 years, humans have been causing high levels of carbon dioxide and other gas emissions. Continue reading...
