In California, MICRA (Medical Injury Compensation Reform Act) became a law in 1975. This law is likely to change in January 2023. Looks like the status quo is not an option. You can learn more about the upcoming changes if you follow the assembly bill AB 35. If AB 35 passes and then becomes a law, FIPA (Fairness for Injured Patients Act) will not appear as an initiative on the ballot in the November 2022 election. We have to wait and see where these changes will take us to.
Infant formula shortage has been a nationwide concern during this pandemic and the situation got worse recently. On February 17, the largest infant formula manufacturer in the country—Abbott Nutrition—initiated a voluntary recall of several lines of powdered formula. This came after concerns about bacterial contamination at Abbott’s Sturgis, Michigan facility after four infants fell ill and two died. The AAP published an article on HealthyChildren.org to educate parents on this topic. You may access the link and share it with families in your practice: With the baby formula shortage, what should I do if I can't find any?
Additional information is provided below by our chapter breastfeeding coordinator, Dr. Candace Gragnani.
Our Member Spotlight features Dr. Ashaunta Anderson, general pediatrician at CHLA. I hope to see more of you participate and make this part of the newsletter interesting, by submitting your personal narratives to be published.
The Residency Corner has been featuring the finalists of the 2022 Research Awards. This month we have Caroline Bebawy, a fourth-year medical student at Loma Linda University.
I want to thank the Climate Change and Immigrant Health Committees for the recent joint webinar on climate and migration with speaker Dr. Caleb Dresser. If you were not able to attend the Climate Change and Human Migration webinar on April 21, you may access the slides and video. The most recent webinars may be accessed by following the links provided in the Recent Events section below.
