American Academy of Pediatrics California Chapter 2
2022 - November Edition
|
|
Grant Christman, MD, MACM, FAAP
|
|
The midterm elections brought us an important victory for child health in California: the passage of Proposition 31. This month, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) published a report based on the 2022 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) showing that 16.5% of high school students and 4.5% of middle school students state they are currently using tobacco products, with e-cigarettes/vapes being by far the most used.
|
|
Candy and fruit flavored tobacco products target children’s taste preferences and get them addicted to nicotine, often leading to use of other products like cigarettes. Proposition 31 bans most flavored tobacco products and tobacco product flavor enhancers in our state. Chapter 2 members have been traveling to city council meetings and state capitol offices for many years to advocate for flavor bans and other vaping limits. I would like to congratulate them on this hard-won victory!
I would also like to call attention to another positive development for the chapter: the return of in-person member events. Last month, Dr. Ken Saul (Chapter 2 Ventura County Area Representative) hosted a town hall on Meningococcal B disease in Woodland Hills. The town hall was very well-attended by local chapter members and featured a special guest who shared her experiences as a meningitis survivor.
On December 10, we will be hosting a social event for pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists at the Penmar Golf Course in Venice. There will be food, music, and even a ping-pong table for kids and adults to enjoy. All chapter members and their families are welcome, and we encourage you to bring a pediatric colleague (member or not). We are hoping to host more events like this soon in every region of our very large chapter. Please email Tomas at ttorices@aapca2.org if you have any ideas for an event or would like to host!
This month's member spotlight features Candace Gragnani MD, MPH, FAAP, who practices preventive medicine at UCLA and is the Chapter 2 Breastfeeding Champion.
I would like to welcome our new chapter members and encourage them to get involved by joining a chapter committee. Information about our committees and other resources are available on our website, aapca2.org. Your support makes the work of this chapter possible!
Some other highlights and upcoming events in this month’s newsletter include:
-
Dr. Kamaal Jones gives a debrief on the recent election in The Quorum
- Dr. Nina Shapiro discusses the tongue tie controversy
-
Dr. Melissa Ruiz shares her reflections in The Long Days of Winter

-
December 10th: AAP-CA2 Social at The Penmar in Venice (near the Santa Monica Airport)
- May 20, 2023 | AAP-CA2 Advances in Pediatrics Symposium at UCLA

Grant Christman, MD, MACM, FAAP

Tongue Tie: Cutting through the Controversy
Nina Shapiro, MD
In surgery, there’s a saying: “A chance to cut is a chance to cure.” Most surgeons learn early on that a good surgeon knows how to operate; but a great surgeon knows when not to operate. This issue continues to be met with when it comes to tongue tie surgery. Tongue tie, or ankyloglossia, is a manifestation of the thin band of tissue, usually a translucent, white membrane, on the undersurface of the tongue, known as the lingual frenulum. Diagnosis and management sparks debate between pediatric colleagues. Read more ...

The Quorum
Status Post Midterms
By Kamaal A. Jones, MD, FAAP - Policy and Legislative Affairs Analyst
While votes are still being tallied throughout California and the nation, this midterm election has shaped up to be extremely consequential. If ever there was a question about the value of an individual vote, one need look no further than the margins of this most recent election to see how close some of these races and ballot measures have been. The AAP-CA2 Newsletter Committee asked the following question to readers in winter 2020: The days are getting shorter, but the work hours seem to be getting longer. What do you do to stay balanced during the busy winter respiratory season? Now, as daylight savings time ends in 2022, we asked Dr. Ruiz to share an updated response two years later. Please enjoy.

The Long Days of Winter
Melissa Ruiz, MD, FAAP
I’m a morning person, so the earlier sunshine is just what the doctor ordered for my early mornings! Getting up and exercising helps me start my day with more positive energy and gives me the patience to work with my partner to get our three boys ready and get them where they need to be.
