American Academy of Pediatrics - California Chapter 2

Melissa Ruiz, MD, MPH, FAAP

2024 November Edition

President's Message

Hello to all my fellow child advocates. As the last election results trickle in, I remind myself that, as pediatricians, our primary focus is the health and well-being of the children and families we care for. In today's complex political climate, we must advocate for policies that prioritize health equity and foster strong communities.

Advocacy is our superpower. Dr. Ben Hoffman, president of the national AAP, reminded us of this at the national conference - “Advocacy starts in the exam room or at the bedside by addressing concerns of a patient or family and extends as influence in communities or legislation.” So let’s all continue the work, proudly wearing our capes and protecting all children.

I also have to remind myself to take a breath. I constantly have a thousand “To-do list” items running through my head at any given time and so I have to remember to truly be present in that exam room or at home during a tickle war with my boys, or when I am waiting on that last wave to take in. Please take a moment to remember to take a breath as Dr. Niru Madduri reminds us in our mindful contemplation section featuring "Filling Your Cup".

We have a leadership opportunity for an Early Career Physician to fulfill the role of ECP Chapter Representative. Please look for the details below. The deadline to apply is November 30th.

In the member spotlight we have AAP-CA2 Member At Large Ozlem Equils, MD, FAAP.

In the Trainees’ Corner, we have the work of Elizabeth Volpicelli, MD, that was presented at our annual symposium.

Remember to register for the Nov 19th webinar with Brightlife and Soluna, the two new FREE state-sponsored behavioral programs available for YOUR patients. Learn more and get your questions answered - Register now.

We are continuing to work on developing our in-person mental health conference. Please Save-The -Date for March 11, 2025 from 3 to 7 PM for this event to be held at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. In addition, we are working on developing a mental health resources space on our Chapter website. We will start uploading documents and links to helpful sites in the upcoming months.

I would like to welcome our new chapter members and encourage them to get involved by joining a chapter committee or reaching out to Tomas or myself to find where your passion - your voice - might best fit in Chapter 2. Information about our committees and other resources are available on our website, https://aapca2.org.

Your support and engagement makes the work of this chapter possible.

Chair, Newsletter Editorial Board

Many of us literally fill our cups daily with a warm drink, whether coffee or tea-based. There is something very relaxing and soothing about that first sip in the morning. One of my favorite treats is a gift card to Starbucks or Dunkin’. Coffee makers can bring .... Continue reading

EDI CORNER

Election Day marked the beginning of momentous change for our country. Our democratic process of choosing the next leader strives to allow voters to contribute to the election process, though can also lead to many feeling isolated, distressed, or experiencing prejudice. The change that will accompany this election can also be felt by the children we care for at work and in our families. As the District’s EDI Champions, we strongly encourage engagement in the civic process that can give our communities a change to express their opinions. Similarly, we support members and families taking steps to preserve their emotional wellbeing during times of uncertainty. Protecting your wellbeing can include:

  • Limiting notifications from breaking news on mobile devices
  • Replacing time on social media with time spent in person with family and friends doing activities
  • Choosing local, community-centered news resources when engaging in political updates
  • Prioritizing meaningful self-care activities to help manage stress or anxiety
  • No matter what the election results, find ways to promote specific initiatives or advocacy efforts important to you. APA

Through the upcoming days and week, we remain committed as your EDI Champions to provide support and counsel to our members and leaders. We stay committed to serving as a bridge to understanding differences we may encounter while also remaining focused on our mission to ensure all children feel cared for in a society that respects diversity and inclusion.

Proposition 35 - Update

Proposition 35 Coming out of the November 5th election, the AAP-CA2 supported Proposition 35 successfully passed! This proposition makes permanent a tax on managed health care insurance plans. It was an initiative sponsored by California’s health care industry to raise more money for Medi-Cal and block lawmakers from using the cash to avoid cuts to other programs. The measure would hold Newsom to a promise to permanently secure that tax money for health care for low-income patients.

We need to develop a core group of members who are ready to call or email their legislators when opportunities arise, and accompany pediatric residents on their annual local legislative visits.

If you would be interested becoming a key contact, please fill out the form below with the requested information! Thanks again for your support of the chapter's advocacy efforts.
