I hope that you all had a good summer break. COVID is still here and causing 1500 deaths a day in our country. Vaccine rates are increasing but have not reached levels to give us herd immunity.
Strengthening the Vaccines for Children Program Act of 2021 was the topic of this year’s AAP Advocacy Conference. Bipartisan house bill H.R. 2347, and bipartisan senate bill S. 2691 are moving through congressional committees for the betterment of children.

Voting for National AAP President Elect, District IX Chairperson and Vice Chairperson concluded on September 8. Sandy L. Chung, MD, FAAP, of Fairfax, VA has been voted AAP president-elect. Dr. Chung will take over as president on Jan. 1, 2023, following Moira A. Szilagyi, MD, PhD, FAAP, of Marina Del Rey, who will serve as president in 2022. At the District level, I would like to congratulate Yasuko Fukuda, MD, FAAP for being elected as District IX Chairperson, and Eric Ball, MD, FAAP as District IX Vice Chairperson.
For physicians to apply for the grant money through American Rescue Plan (ARP) and Provider Relief Fund (PRF), the HRSA website will open on September 29, 2021. Please check with your accountant to see whether you qualify for these grants. All qualified physicians will get paid grant money, but physicians from rural areas will get higher payments. Dr. Van Groningen is the new AAP-CA2 Legislative and Policy Analyst, and will be leading all advocacy efforts in our Chapter, representing us locally and in Sacramento. Our Advances in Pediatrics Symposium is set for February 26, 2022 at UCLA. This will be a hybrid event with the option of attending in person, or virtually via Zoom. Please save the date! Residents and medical students, the abstract submission deadline is December 15th.

General Information:
The AAP California Chapter 2 will accept abstracts on scholarly projects by pediatric and medicine-pediatric residents from CHLA, Harbor-UCLA, Kaiser LA, Loma Linda, UCLA, and USC.
Students from medical schools in the Southern California counties of Kern, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura are also invited to submit their abstracts.

Advocacy Week at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA)

Residency Corner Articles: The Residency Corner is dedicated to highlighting resident voices and providing an opportunity to find peer connections across the residency programs in the chapter. It is a space for residents to publish articles on their topics of interest. Submissions from all areas are welcome, including sharing ideas to stay socially connected during residency, describing personal hobbies or passions, highlighting resident research or QI projects, describing advocacy efforts, or providing advice and perspective on transitions during residency.
