ON THE WATER

It’s said that all good things must come to an end–but it‘s not said that the end has to come as quickly as the good news on our waterways did. You probably have seen or read the latest reports pertaining to the health and safety of our local beaches, bays and tributaries. Bacteria levels are back up in the danger zone in some areas (especially fecal bacteria) and red tide concentrations are considerably higher than they were a week or two ago. Health officials have posted warnings against going into the water in some locations and a case of flesh-eating bacteria was reported in North Ft. Myers. Although these situations were not totally unexpected, it is a sobering reminder that the recovery from Hurricane Ian will take time and our patience will be tested. Be sure to check reports before heading to the water.

How to Avoid Plateaus in Exercise

There are some basic principles that govern the world of exercise, and knowing them can help you set up and manipulate different components of your workout.

FITT is an easy way to remember the exercise variables you can manipulate to avoid plateaus and to keep your body challenged:

  • Frequency - how often you exercise
  • Intensity - how hard you exercise
  • Time - how long you exercise
  • Type - the type of exercise you're doing (e.g., running, walking, etc.)

When you work out at a sufficient intensity, time, and frequency, your body will improve (also called the Training Effect) and you'll start to see changes in your weight, body fat percentage, cardio endurance, and strength. When your body adjusts to your current FITT levels, it's time to manipulate one of more of them. For example, if you've been walking three times a week for 20 minutes and you've stopped seeing improvement, you could change your program in one or more of the following ways:

Frequency - Add one more day of walking.

Intensity - Add short bursts of speed walking, or hill training.

Time - Add 10 to 15 minutes to your usual workout time.

Type - Do a different activity, such as cycling, swimming, or aerobics.

Changing any of these variables every four to six weeks can help you keep that training effect going.

Cruisers bike a 10–15 mile route at a leisurely pace that does not exceed 12 mph, on secondary streets, bike paths and sidewalks.

Sprinters bike a 15–25-mile route at a moderate pace that can average 12-14 mph, on secondary roads, bike paths and bike lanes.

Road Riders bike a 25-40 mile route at a pace of 16-18 mph, resulting in an average speed of 14-16 mph, on secondary roads, bike paths and bike lanes.

Over 20 Cruisers split into two groups. One group covered 11 miles and the other group went 14 miles.

This past Saturday we had over 30 riders and split into 4 groups. Sprinters went to FGCU for 23 miles.

Road Riders took Alico to the airport and through Wild Blue for 36 miles

Destination Bike Ride Venice. Depart from Clubhouse parking lot at approximately 7am. Reservations open on February 19th.

Fundraiser Ride - Naples Pathway Coalition (NPC)

Naples Bike Brunch March 5th

Last year we had a good number of riders participate in this fundraiser ride for Naples Pathway Coalition. This group is working on multi use trails in Collier county and is a little further along than Friends of BERT. We encourage all to support this group by riding in the event.

BOCCE

As we close out the Community Bocce League for the month of January, we see many games going to the all important tie breaker, which can only mean that the competition in all three divisions is pretty equal.

This week we had our second shootout between Edgewater 1 and 2, which came down to a perfect throw by Edgewater 2 to win the match.

We also had Palmetto Dunes C, who was winless, defeat The Masters 2 team, who was sporting a perfect 5-0, in a thrilling three game set. Every game seems to get more exciting.

I need to apologize to one team last week, Palmetto Dunes B, who was also 4-0, but now stands alone as the only undefeated Bocce team at a perfect 5-0 and leads the Sound Division by one game over Edgewater 1 at 4-1. Palmetto Dunes A and Master 2 are leading the Lakes Division sitting at 5-1, followed closely by Palmetto Dunes D at 4-1 and Island Sound 1B at 4-2. Island Sound 2B and Southern Hills 2, both lead the River Division at 4-1, and right after are 3 other teams, Hammock Greens, Seaside 3 and Torrey Pines, all at 3-2.

Looking forward to heated, February Battles (Go BIRDS)
