Training Vigorously Has Its Benefits
We all know it's healthier to exercise regularly than to sit around doing nothing, but research has been mixed as to whether the type of exercise is more important than exercise itself. A recent study hints at an important answer, suggesting more vigorous exercise reduces the risk of early death.
Specifically, exercisers who dedicated up to 30 percent of their workout time per week to strenuous exercise reduced their risk of early death by 9 percent compared to people who exercised, but not vigorously. Those who dedicated more than 30 percent of their weekly workouts to vigorous exercise reduced their risk by 13 percent.
Vigorous vs. non-vigorous exercise was defined in the study as running vs. walking, playing competitive singles tennis vs. a casual doubles game, and so on. Of course, one cannot just jump into “vigorous” exercise. Always start easy and work your way up. The body is amazing in that it will adapt to what you make it do. But it takes time to build up stamina and endurance.
By the way, a second study reinforced the concept that any exercise is better than no exercise, finding that even people who exercised a little every week were less likely to die prematurely than people who never exercised. The more exercise per week, the lower the risk of premature death.
Do you exercise regularly? If not, it's time to start. Talk to your doctor about the health benefits of a sensible, consistent exercise program. You'll look better, feel better – and live longer.

Fitness Director

Welcome back to all those who spent the summer months in other locales. We hope you are ready for another fantastic season of enjoying all our water-related activities here at Pelican Sound Golf & River Club. Your Watercraft and River Committee ("WRC") is committed to working diligently to ensure that the Estero River remains a focal point, not only in our community but also in the Village of Estero, Lee County, and the State of Florida. We will continue to expand our interactions with our river neighbors and offer support to the numerous governmental, educational, and community organizations involved in programs to maintain and enhance the quality of this valuable resource.
Just to clarify, the WRC is not solely a 'boater's club' or a 'fishing club,' even though both activities were pivotal in forming the committee and will remain a significant part of our monthly agendas. We have broadened our scope of interests to include taking an active role in ongoing environmental and navigational challenges on our River, overseeing maintenance and regulations in the storage yard, managing organization and rules regarding the River Club parking lots and launch area, and supporting management objectives related to the boat shuttle. We welcome your attendance at our monthly committee meetings and your suggestions concerning our activities.
To kick off this season, it's essential to check your trailer, vessel, and engines to ensure they are in good operating condition. Additionally, remember to inspect your equipment. Unexpected issues can arise in Florida's summer heat, so it's wise not to wait until you're on the water to test things out. And, of course, safety always comes first. Here's a reminder of items you should have on board:
On-Board Equipment (some may not apply to canoes & kayaks)
- Life Jackets: You must have the appropriate size and type onboard for all passengers, along with a Type IV throwable device. In many states, passengers under a certain age must wear a personal flotation device at all times.
- GPS/Chart Plotter/Depth Finder: Electronics like GPS plotters and depth finders are more affordable these days. Knowing your precise location and the shallow areas to avoid can significantly reduce anxiety for novice and seasoned boaters alike. It's also a good idea to have a paper chart as a backup.
- Fire Extinguisher: Always have a handheld portable fire extinguisher on board, fully charged, corrosion-free, and within the manufacturer's specified useful life.
- Flares: Carry flares on board to signal for help or alert other boats to your position. Flares have expiration dates; ensure yours are current or use a battery-powered model.
- Whistle or Bell: Your horn might not work if your battery is completely dead, but having a whistle or bell allows you to signal for assistance.
- First Aid Kit: Fishhooks, coral, and oyster shells are sharp and just some of the hazards you want to avoid while out on the water. Always plan ahead and keep a first-aid kit on hand.
- Paddle: If all else fails, you can propel a reasonably sized boat with your body, but only if you are prepared. Acquire a paddle in advance for that last-resort method.
- Lines and Tow Rope: You need a decent selection of dock lines, but a tow rope is also highly useful when you or another boater is adrift.
- Communication Device: While cell phones are widely available and excellent, in areas with spotty cell phone service, you can lose contact with the world. Depending on your location and boating style, consider a VHF radio and/or a satellite phone.
- Anchor: An appropriately sized anchor suitable for your boat and the waters is a must. It not only allows you to stop and enjoy the day practically anywhere you choose, but it also prevents you from drifting in case of power loss.
The hope with any safety equipment is that you never have to use it. However, being prepared is a smart practice and ensures readiness for most situations. Stay safe and have an exceptional boating season!
Marc Goldstein,
Watercraft and River Committee
