Sails from the Dockside
Wow!!! Hope everyone had a happy holiday season. This past year has been one for the record books. Even with the COVID issues, we managed to certify more students this year than any year since 1998. A tribute to all our staff, including our instructors, office staff, and my favorite, dock staff.
We are all geared up to complete our preseason preventative maintenance and making plans for this new 2022 season. Some of you have noticed a couple of the 270’s getting some serious TLC with mast step repairs. We still have much more to do with rig tunings, winch rebuilds, and various other maintenance tasks.
We look forward to seeing you, our members, at the dock enjoying our fleet and participating in our clinics. Remember, our entire reason for being at the dock is to assist you in getting to the sailing level you desire. If you have suggestions for clinics next year, please email me at [email protected]. We will be meeting in the next couple of weeks to finalize next year’s schedule of events.

This past year we stuck our feet in the water to test the feasibility of teaching ASA Basic Coastal Cruising (103) and ASA 104 Bareboat Charter on Lake Lanier. The classes came out with the exact results we expected. Our instructors took on the new challenge. The graduates felt very comfortable with their newfound knowledge and seamanship skills. They are now enjoying the fun of skippering boats in our diesel fleet. Some have already setup charters in the Caribbean. Living the dream!
Classes are already scheduling for 2022. Call the main office 770-945-8810 to get yourself in one of the classes. We have a copy of class schedules at the dock and on our website, Lanier Sailing Academy

Keep an eye on our monthly Docklines to keep up with our schedule of club events. If you see clinics in the Docklines or posted at the dock, get signed up early. I also ask that if you sign up and are unable to attend, please call us at the dock in enough time to contact those members on the clinic’s wait list.
We are still continuously cleaning our boats and providing hand sanitizer, along with masks, as you need. We still request only one person in the dock office at a time.
I am looking forward to another great year despite all the craziness of the times. We are here to provide the escape you are looking for. Come up and get your sail on.
Be safe,
Capt. Phil

Penguin Regatta 2022!
Sat, Jan 8, 11:00a - 5:00p.
What better way to start 2022 than partying like a penguin! Yes: Be outside with your best "waddle" or "raft"
We'll spend the day sailing a course that takes you to part of the lake you may not have been to before. Dress for success: layers. And extra points for Penguin-ware. Remember: There's no bad weather -- just the wrong clothing.
We'll use our diesel fleet, so all boats will have a head and a cabin to re-warm as needed. Open to all members, regardless of experience, as the club will provide an experienced skipper for each boat.
Bring a snack to share and plan to enjoy your day on the lake.
An amusing and entertaining post-sailing event is rumored although not connected with the event.
Please call or text the dock to confirm your reservation. 770-614-5724

Polar Bear Fun Sail
Sat, Feb 5, 11:00a - 5:00p
The 3rd of our Winter "You're Going Sailing When?" series of events. Not to be confused with an annual Polar Bear Swims, our plan is to stay warm, stay dry, and have a boatload of fun sailing to another interesting lake location.
Do yourself of favor and get out of the house for fresh air and natural Vitamin D (sunshine). It will do your spirit and your body well.
We'll use our diesel fleet, so all boat will have a head and a cabin to re-warm as needed. Open to all members, regardless of experience, as the club will provide an experienced skipper for each boat.

A sailor's sailor, Duncan Hood 's Latest Book
"Duncan Hood, a dear friend of LSA and a master sailor in his own right, has publish four books about coastal sailing and his nautical experiences along the way. We recommend these entertaining and dream generating works of literature.
Witty and informative, this is the ship's log and trip journal from a 7-week journey from Annapolis, MD to Lake Champlain and back. The trip totaled 1,200 miles and required un-stepping and re-stepping the masts of a beautiful Cherubini 48' schooner, Adventurer. The trip was completed in 5 sections, each with a different crew. For anyone considering any American canal route and just a good, fun read, follow along!

Announcing a NEW Share the Sail in Paradise – Belize!
Unspoiled and less crowded than other parts of the Caribbean, Belize is a laid-back paradise very similar to the cruising grounds of the South Pacific. Known for world-class snorkeling, superior chartering in protected waters, and unparalleled natural beauty, a Belize cruising vacation is unique and special. A Belize cruising vacation naturally focuses on the onboard experience, scenic anchorages behind palm-fringed or mangrove-lined cayes, and the fantastic swimming and snorkeling in some of the clearest water anywhere. Forays to restaurants on the cayes to sample local cuisine and exposure to Belizean culture add to the pleasures.

A Moorings 4800 catamaran has been reserved for the trip, configured with four cabins with ensuite heads. The first night is a sleep-aboard on the boat June 3, 2022 in the Laru Beya Marina on the Placencia peninsula, with departure the next morning following chart and boat briefings at the Moorings base. The boat is due back at the base on the morning of June 11, 2022. Direct flights from Atlanta to Belize City International Airport are available, with flight connections on a regional carrier to the regional airport near the base.
Your share of the charter expense is $3200 per cabin, one or two person occupancy, covering all boat expenses (charter vessel and dinghy, cleaning fee, taxes and required permits, insurance, on board provisions, moorings, dock fees, fuel, water and ice, and the expenses of your skipper/coach). You will be responsible for transportation to and from the charter base, all shore side expenses, any adult beverages you choose to have on board, and any personal or miscellaneous expenses. One person per cabin needs to be ASA 104 Bareboat Certified and all crew must be fully vaccinated for Covid 19 for this charter.
This is not a class, just a fun, relaxing sailing trip in paradise where you get to practice your LSA-trained skills, under the watchful eye of your skipper/coach Ed Caldwell, whose company Burwell Global, Inc. is making this trip possible. Contact Ed at [email protected] or 404.307.0314 to get on the list!

Honez: New Year's Dreaming
A new year is upon us and with it comes the inevitable resolutions and review of bucket lists.
Let's start with resolutions.
- I resolve to enjoy the food I eat, the stuff I drink and not to blame anyone if it kills me dead.
- I resolve to enjoy the things that I choose to do.
- I resolve to complain both long and loudly about the things I don't want to do but must do because I like to eat or my wife tells me I have to do it.
- I resolve to smile and laugh when I am happy.
- I resolve to not make others cry when I am not happy. (Ok, I think we all know that is not going to happen.)
- I resolve to be a good crewmate (so that people will let me on their boats).
- I resolve to learn to cook better. (Any trained monkey can steer the boat, raise the main sail or tie a bowline. Feeding the weary sailor at the end of day and offering them a splendid wine pairing to watch the sun go down will always guarantee you a berth.)
Alrighty then, resolutions complete.
Bucket list.
- Travel with Sweet Jane to anywhere she wants to go. She is still hot, makes me laugh and most importantly, lets me off the chain to do my sailing thing.
- Sail every weekend I can and every weekday I can sneak out of work.
- Have a grand adventure in a boat.
- Visit exotic ports.
- Meet the locals.
- Eat Pancakes with the locals.
- Drink beer with the locals.
- Laugh with the locals.
- Dance with the locals.
- Sing with the locals.
- Have a night cap with the locals.
- Sing some more with the locals.
- Have another night cap with the locals.
- Lay in my hammock on the fore deck and count the stars between my toes.
- Share all of the above with good friends and crew mates.
So, come on up to the lake and you can put your resolutions to the test and share your bucket list for the new year. I will let you taste my famous meat and veggies on stick, grilled to perfection. Goes great with a bottle of red or a bottle of white, it all depends on your mood you're in... I learned that from a piano playing sommelier named Billy in bar somewhere, sometime ago.
Happy New Year and Sail Safe

Cap'n Noah T'all
How can something that big move that fast?
I was recently on a boat coming out of Key West harbor. Our captain had gone below to make a call on the radio to another boat in our flotilla. Before going below, he admonished us to keep a sharp look out and report any approaching craft. The only boat we saw while he was below was a cruise ship, but we did not call him because it was just coming over the horizon. After a few minutes he came back on deck and looked around, he asked if we saw the "big assed ship over there"? We all said we did, he then said "and you didn't tell me?"
Somebody said it was way out on the horizon so we thought we didn't need to. The captain said, "when I ask you to report everything you see, I mean just that." He seemed kinda mad, but did not say anything else, can you tell me why he was so mad?
Shilley Goosse
Shilley,
I know why he was mad; I would have been too. Safety is the number one priority on a boat and you guys were ignoring a big one. Here is why.
Cruise ships can move at 20 knots. The horizon is generally 3 miles away from the deck of a sailboat. A cruise ship is pretty tall, so let's say it is 6 miles away when you first spot it. How long before it runs you over if it is pointed at you? 15 minutes and 38 seconds, give or take. So how many minutes had passed before the captain came on deck? 5 minutes? 10 minutes? You get my point. With something like a cruise ship, you want the maximum amount of time to maneuver to put yourself out of harm's way.
So, when you are on lookout, sing out the instant you see something. Don't assume everyone else saw it and don't assume there is plenty time. Things are closer and moving faster than you think. No lookout has ever gotten in trouble for reporting something that everyone has seen or for calling out a contact too early; there ain't no such animal.
So, till next time, keep a sharp look out, sing out early and often and sail safe.
Cap'n Noah T'all
