 Gratitude and Generosity (Mark 12:38-44)
 
 
"Some people are always grumbling because roses have thorns; I am thankful that thorns have roses." In Mark 12, the widow would have shared the thankful perspective. Although her gratitude was unspoken, her act of giving away all that she had spoke volumes. Most of us usually give to our local church or charitable organizations only after our needs and some wants have been satisfied.
 
Her generosity captured Jesus' attention and he responded saying,
 
" Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury.    For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on." (v. 43-44)
 
Why did she give such a generous gift?
Dr. Michael McCullough is a psychologist and editor of the book, The Psychology of Gratitude. In an interview on public radio, McCullough said:
"Your grandmother was right.  When people are encouraged to take a few moments, every day, even as little time as two or three minutes a day, to simply appreciate a few positive things that typically somebody else did for us, you end up feeling better at the end of the day about your life in general.  We see boosts in positive emotion. We see reductions in negative emotion.  People are more satisfied with their lives, as a whole ... they even sleep better at night! They are more prone to spiritual pursuits."
Taking time daily to be grateful for the blessings in our lives leads to more satisfaction and sense of well-being. Based on McCullough's research, perhaps the widow went to the Temple that day filled with gratitude for blessings despite her lowly status. With her mind set on spiritual pursuits to honor God, she tossed the only shred of independence she had in the offering plate. All that remained was her complete dependence on God.
The widow's gift - both in the generosity AND in the gratitude behind it -  was an investment in hope that her life, and lives of others in her community, still meant something to God.
As part of a Friends of Penn Central Conference OCWM fundraising campaign, we are inviting you to practice a similar generosity that invests in the hope of our ministry together. More details about the campaign will be available next week that outlines convenient online giving using the new "donate" button on the Conference website homepage.
Recovery efforts from hurricanes Harvey and Irma will continue to require your support for a long time and I encourage you to keep giving as you can. Additionally, giving to your local church on a regular basis is important.

Big Gifts Small Packages: Church Vitality in Small Churches is a workshop about healthy churches. 
 
Join us on October 28, 2017 at 9:30 at Mt. Zion, York.  
 
Rev. Dr. Kristina Lizardy-Hajbi, Director of the United Church of Christ's Center for Analytics, Research and Data (CARD) will explore key questions: 
  •  Is there excitement about the future in your church?
  •  Are people looking forward in their ministry, engaging in planning and visioning rather than spending their energy focused on the past or how things used to be?
  • Is the congregation focused on the past; or, is it stuck measuring the present to the yardstick of the past?
  • How might the church-as it is here and now-be transformed in order meet the challenges we are, and will be, facing?
 
Check-in on October 28 will begin at 9:30.  Devotions will be at 10:00 and the keynote will begin at 10:30. 
 
The cost is $15 per person.  Church groups of 3 or more will be $12 per person. Lunch is included.

The Reformation at 500 and Beyond
 
Dr. Ellingwood's presentation will show how Reformation ideas about grace, faith, and works have influenced our contemporary theology, and which beliefs need to be reinterpreted or abandoned in the 21st century. Ideas about Creation held by Martin Luther, John Calvin, and other Reformers will be explored in terms of God's grace extending not only to all peoples and all nations, but also to all living creatures and all creation.

Clergy and Congregation Care Workshop
 
A congregation's expectations of clergy and church leaders are often greater than their capacity to fulfill them.  When too much focus and expectation is placed on the clergy and a few top leaders, sustainability is not possible long-term.   Scripture speaks of the leadership's role of "equipping the saints."  If clergy and church leaders have a top priority of developing others, they will use a coaching approach to continually develop the potential in other congregants, resulting in a growing pool of leaders.

Saturday, Sept. 16 from 9-Noon, Lancaster Seminary Professor of Practice Bishop Nathan D. Baxter will open to the public his course Preaching to the Public. (It is ideal for local pastors and lay leaders, but not restricted to them.)  The class will take on the topic: Relevance of Amish Grace: Spiritual Considerations and Theological Insights on Forgiveness in an Age of Moral Anger, Social Division, and Spiritual Grief.  Special guest lecturer will be Dr. Donald Kraybill, distinguished professor and senior fellow emeritus at Elizabethtown College, and author of Amish Grace: How Forgiveness Transcended Tragedy.  There will be an ecumenical response panel, open audience discussion, and small group reflection.
 
(Bishop Baxter, who was recently named Lancaster Seminary Professor of Practice, is the retired Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Central Pennsylvania and former Dean of the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. He provided pastoral counseling during 9/11.)

Because in ministry you never stop learning, Lancaster Seminary is opening some popular courses for audit, taught by esteemed faculty. Lee Barrett presents Knowing God, Julia O'Brien presents Gender, Sexuality and the Bible, and Greg Carey teaches Luke and Acts.
 
There also are courses just for pastors - like Ministerial Ethics - and courses for spiritual practice - like Writing as a Spiritual Practice. Take Action: Stand with Immigrant Youth - NEW
   
The leaders of the United Church of Christ will continue to stand with and speak out on behalf of more than 800,000 young people in this country who have applied for and received protection from deportation under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, a program eliminated.

Plant a Yard Sign for the Paris Accord
As a tangible act of witness, churches are invited to plant yard signs that declare, "We [heart] Planet Earth. We Support the Paris Accord." The graphic for the sign can be  downloaded  along with a sample  press release . Check out this article about one UCC church which has planted the sign
 
Preach and Teach
Encourage your pastor to preach on creation care and the truth about climate change and the moral imperative for people of faith to engage and act. Pennsylvania Interfaith Power & Light  is a community of congregations, faith-based organizations, and individuals of faith responding to climate change as a moral issue, through advocacy, energy conservation, energy efficiency, and the use of clean, renewable energy. They have events state wide and provide speakers, resources and encouragement.

Lay Boundary Training - NEW
   
Due to low registration,
the Lay Boundary Training scheduled for Saturday, September 16 has been postponed.
 
Training for Our Whole Lives - NEW

Training for Our Whole Lives, a series of sexuality education programs developed jointly by the UCC and UUA, will come to the Lancaster Association on October 27-29, 2017. 
 
Church of the Apostles in Lancaster will host the weekend-long event, which will cover training needed to lead education programs for grades 7-9 and 10-12.  The training will begin at approximately 5:30pm on Friday 10/27 (registration opens at 4pm, and supper will be served at 5pm), and run through approximately 2:30pm on Sunday 10/29.  The registration fee of $250 (postmarked by September 30) or $300 (postmarked after September 30) per person will cover instruction and all meals from Friday supper through Sunday lunch, but will not include course textbooks or lodging.
 
In order to be certified as a workshop educator, participants must attend the ENTIRE training, without exception.  Because of this, participants who live more than 15 minutes from Church of the Apostles (1850 Marietta Ave, 17603) will be required to lodge in Lancaster instead of commuting from home, as our sessions will begin as early as 7am and run as late as 10pm.
 
Our Whole Lives helps individuals make informed and responsible decisions about their relationships, health, and behavior in the context of their faith.  The creation of the OWL curriculum was a direct response to General Synod actions calling for the development of sexuality education materials for all ages.  For registration materials, lodging information, textbook purchasing information, or any other questions about this upcoming facilitator training, please contact Flo Waldron, Our Whole Lives Coordinator at Church of the Apostles UCC, at waldr005@umn.edu .
 
Retired Boundary Training
 
2 sessions of "Healthy Practices in the Third-Third: Boundary Awareness in Retirement" will be held this Fall.

October 18 at Christ, Elizabethtown
November 16 at St. John's in Lewisburg
9:30 - 12:00  

This training will count toward your association's Boundary Training requirement.

Come explore topics around vocation and identity as well as look at some of the logistics of leaving well and in some cases becoming a member instead of the pastor. With much of the expertise already in the room, we anticipate lively discussion of life in real-world retirement and how we navigate the blessings and challenges of this time in our lives.

This workshop walks pastors and leaders through the process of reaching out to the community and attracting new people to attend worship. Once they are attending worship, three changes will be recommended to ensure their return . We will explore Web sites , visitor tabs and using the Smart Phone as a device for evangelism. Key learnings will be around worship days and times, how to make Holy some of the secular Holidays and how to do small groups in the middle of worship.

Would You Like a Mystery Visitor to Come to Your Church?

The conference has trained 12 Mystery Visitors who are willing to visit your church on Sunday morning and give you a detailed report. Pastors can request a visitor (and they are the only ones allowed to do so) and they will receive the report to do with it as they see fit.

These visitors will assess the website, curb appeal and hospitality (as well as the coffee!). They will not be evaluating the pastor or the service itself. While most of the mystery visitors are churched, we also have a few seekers. To request a mystery visitor, contact Laurene Bowers   LBowers@pccucc.org

Concert and Silent Auction to Benefit Kenya Mission Trip

The concert (and accompanying silent auction) benefits the upcoming partnership 2018 People-to-People Pilgrimage to Kenya.

On November 12, Starview UCC in Mt. Wolf will host an opioid epidemic seminar from 12 - 2.  For details.
 
York Association November Association Annual Meeting
The York Association will host Mr. Mark Lutz, the author of UnPoverty, at their Annual Meeting November 12. 
 
In preparation for his visit, Community Outreach members have prepared a study guide for you and your congregations to use as you read this book.  Currently the Association has 30 copies of this book you can borrow.  As you make your plans for summer and fall, please contact Rev. Cathy Sherry ( CathyLHS19@comcast.net ) to reserve copies for use at your church.
