sPoTlight on: Commissioner Jen Ramien
Meet the new commissioner for Ward 5 (Level Green), Jen Ramien, a resident since 1979. - Brian Montgomery

How far back do you remember the site of Kelly’s Creekside?
JR: Oh, that was the Quik Pik. I did work at the Pizza Shack when that was there. I worked for Beltramo’s for a little bit, too, part-time.

What’s your background in government?
JR: Currently, I work for Representative (George) Dunbar, and I’ve been there since he got elected in 2010. We get calls about everything, state related or not, so we get a lot of calls about township stuff. My dad was a township commissioner, and that’s how I met George, because he was a township commissioner at the same time. Working in state government, meeting people, (is) what got me interested in it.

How do you see Level Green growing?
JR: Development-wise, I grew up here and a couple of new plans (have) come in, but not that many, so I like the bedroom community aspect of it. I would like to see it continue to be that (way), because that’s what brought a lot of people to this area, the small town (atmosphere). With the schools, we do need to make sure to keep (enrollment) up, but also try to maintain a good balance.

You’re also on the Rec Board. What are Level Green’s recreational needs?
JR: Level Green playground, I grew up playing there. I didn’t go to school there, I went to St. Regis, but my son plays there. TLGAA closed, so they’re not doing baseball there anymore, (so, providing) more things for keeping our kids busy and doing healthy things.

Like at Penn Township’s Municipal Park?
JR: Municipal Park is awesome! And the (Penn Township) Fall Festival, I’ve been on it since Day One. My dad and a friend of his, it was their idea to (celebrate) the 150th anniversary, and then they (decided) to keep doing it. I wasn’t too involved at the beginning, but I was helping. Eight or nine years ago, my husband and I started taking care of all of the vendors. Every year, we just keep trying to make it better and better, and I love hearing people say how much fun they had. We spend the entire week there leading up to (it) and I love every second of it.

What do you appreciate the most about Level Green?
JR: That’s a really good question, because it’s home. I know so many people; I can walk in the gas station and say ‘hi’ and know a lot of the people in there. Just the small town, everyone-knows-everyone (feel).

Dear Friends,

We hope this message finds you well. Today, we want to shed light on the incredible work being done by the Bushy Run Battlefield Heritage Society, Inc. (BRBHS) and invite you to join us in preserving and celebrating Pennsylvania's only recognized Native American Battlefield.

About Bushy Run Battlefield:
Colonel Henry Bouquet's leadership and the bravery of approximately 400 British soldiers marked a pivotal moment in history. In 1763, the Battle of Bushy Run secured the opening of western Pennsylvania to settlement, ending unchecked attacks against frontier outposts. The battlefield, with its interpretive exhibit, "The March to Bushy Run," is a testament to this decisive victory.

The Mission and Goals:
The BRBHS, formed in 1980, is a non-profit, volunteer organization committed to preserving and restoring Bushy Run Battlefield. The mission is to interpret the pivotal battle of Pontiac’s War and its role in maintaining control of North America. Educational programs, guided tours, and special events aim to broaden public understanding of this critical period in history.

Your donation to BRBHS contributes to low-cost and free educational programming, museum upkeep, historical community events, and the employment of a museum administrator. If you prefer, you can send a check payable to BRBHS at the address below:

Keeping Our Waterways Clean
Every Drop Counts!
As part of Penn Township’s commitment to preserving our environment, we bring you vital information on our Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System, also known as MS4, in partnership with the Pennsylvania DEP.

Important Reminder: Storm sewer inlets, curbs, gutters, drainage ditches, and storm pipes in Penn Township discharge directly to our natural waterways, untreated. This is a collective responsibility, and by taking small steps, we can make a big difference.

Monthly Recommendations:

🌱 March: Properly dispose of motor oil, oil-based paints, solvents, household cleaners, and other hazardous household chemicals. More info? Westmoreland Clean Ways.

🌱 April: Don’t discard leaves, grass clippings, or other wastes into storm drains, ditches, or stream channels.

🌱 May: Keep your grass at least 3 inches tall. Longer grass is healthier and needs less fertilizer.

🚗 June: Prefer commercial car washes. Washing at home? Do it over grass or gravel. Divert washwater to these areas.

🏊 September: Draining your pool? First, let it dechlorinate! Keep it uncovered and wait ten days post the last chlorination.

🍂 October: Using fertilizers or pesticides? Follow directions closely. Never apply just before rain.

🍂 November: Like April, always avoid discarding wastes into storm drains, ditches, or streams.

🐾 December: Pets are family, but their waste isn't! Clean up after them and prevent waste from entering the storm drain or streets.

Together, we can keep our Penn Township waterways beautiful, clean, and safe! 🌏💧🍃
