Pennsylvania's Day at the Races a Quiet Labor Day
2019 Labor Day at Parx featured the return of Smarty Jones, with record handle and crowds. Smarty Jones brought everyone out and masks were never considered.....This year only small sections were open but a great day of racing excitement carried us through!
2020 Labor Day featured PA Breeders Day at the races, originally scheduled for August but still featuring great racing and five $80,000 state-bred stakes races. Pictured is Bernie Houghton's Somerset Bay in the "Prince Lucky" maiden boys.

AMAZING LABOR DAY WEEKEND AT PARX AND FOR PARX
BY Dick Jerardi

It was quite a Pennsylvania Day at the Races on Labor Day at Parx, with five stakes races for state breds, including a moment after one that perfectly explains the emotion surrounding the people and their horses. It was an amazing Sunday for Parx when trainer Butch Reid won his second Grade I at Saratoga. Oh by the way, they finally ran the Kentucky Derby on Saturday. And, yes, trainer Bob Baffert won it for a record-tying sixth time.

No surprise that trainer Eddie Coletti and owner Bob Hutt’s Uptowncharlybrown Stud won the first two stakes with sons of the great sire Uptowncharlybrown.

It was the tough 5-year-old Wait for It over the tough 7-year-old Someday Jones in the Storm Cat. The two horses, sons of Pennsylvania’s top sire and the state’s favorite horse (Smarty Jones), have now combined to win 20 races and more than $1 million in purses.....

BAFFERT’S TWO DISTINCT DERBY RUNS
September 13th, 2020
By Dick Jerardi
Bob Baffert was pretty sure he was never going to get another chance to win the Kentucky Derby after his first runner, Cavonnier, lost America’s race by a nose in 1996. Nearly a quarter-century later, the legendary trainer has now won the Derby a record-tying six times.

It only took one year for Baffert to prove himself wrong when Silver Charm won the Derby in 1997. Real Quiet won it the next year and then, after his big favorite Point Given, was beaten in 2001, Baffert won it the next year with longshot War Emblem.

So, after thinking he would never win it, Baffert won it three times in six years. Then did not win it again for 13 years.

He was wondering if he would ever win it again when his horses famously ran second in all the 2012 Triple Crown races. The night of that Belmont Stakes, after Union Rags came inside the Baffert-trained Paynter to win at Belmont Park, Baffert stopped by a table at nearby King Umberto’s and asked: “Is there a Triple Crown for seconds?’’

Dennis J. Desmarais, passed away on Aug. 20, 2020, age 78, in Spring Hill, FL due to COVID-19.

He spent his golden years with companion Georgeanna Meyers in sunny Florida, but from the early 1980s until 2002 he trained horses to the tune of 2,208 starts and 272 wins. Twice the Star was his top earner.

Dennis was a horse trainer at Philadelphia Park/Parx and his love for horses remained with him for his entire life. He was a loyal New England, Philadelphia & Tampa sports fan and was an avid reader of western books. There are lots of great laughs and stories surrounding Dennis and his friends here at Parx.
Dennis Desmarais Obituary
Francis Ortale Obituary
Francis J. Ortale, Sr. passed away on September 12, 2020 at the age of 89. Beloved husband of the late Ruth and family. His daughter Diane Katsoff wrote this: Dad
was 89 and was known by various names. Some called him Frank, others Franny, a few Orty. He was involved in PA Thoroughbred racing and breeding for over 45 years. As most owners, he had various trainers over the years. Beginning with David Carr (resulting in a 45 yr friendship) and the most recent with Kate Demasi, who when I spoke to her the night he died really summed up what many have said to me, “he was the nicest man, always a true gentleman, and I was truly honored to have known him”. His racing silks showed his often stated belief that “only in America can a Construction worker own a race horse, thus the blue with white stars and the red and white stripes! He had just received a plaque from local 542 (operating engineers) as a 70 yr member, longest Living active member.
He had many horses over time and although never had a graded stakes winner, Assigini received the award for “Best claiming horse” at the Pa Horsemas banquet in 2004. Claimed for $4,000 and went on to win 7 races, including allowances. To dad and mom the award was like winning the derby! Two other horses will always be linked to dad, American Quest and Ursula’s Passion. You can say The passion for Ursula was an understatement. She was claimed from him 4x and each time he went back in for her! He went on to breed Assaginni, thus forming another long time friendship with Brian Sanfratelli. Everyone on the backside loved him, as evidenced when he would go to track, up until about 6 months ago, and their would be a constant stream of people stopping to say hello and see how he was feeling. He considered everyone as fellow horseman/horsewoman. He greeted and chatted the same; whether you were a hot walker, groom, trainer, jockey, fellow owner, blacksmith, vet or track executive, you were a fellow horseman.
As I mentioned, horse and jockey safety always came first, winning was an added bonus. I don’t think you will find anyone around the track, that didn’t like him.
PTHA's Turning for Home

3,000 Horses Safely Retired from Racing
TURNING FOR HOME
TFH has successfully negotiated the cold waters of COVID -19 by counting on the core Partner Farms who have stood with us for many years to keep helping horses with lower placement fees during the shut down. We managed to cut placement fees by over $100,000 to deflect the income loss of $155,000 over the same period last year. Interestingly, as of September, the intake from Parx is exactly the same as it was last year, with TFH assisting 176 horses over the same period, despite a shut-down. Last year, October was a big month for the change-over and stall applications, so we expect at least 30 horses next month alone. Adoptions were up as more people were staying home, but we expect to have more returns this winter, we have been handling 3 returns a week over the last few weeks with many former horses needing safe landing. So far, no eligible horse has been turned away from our program and we are still moving horses out quickly for our owners.
Recently, TFH passed another milestone we can be proud of, with trainer Bobby Mosco and Owner Jack Armstrong’s Strega Nonna as our 3,000th horse! We are proud to be part of her rehabilitation, retraining, and rehoming to the best opportunity we can find for her to have a successful second career.
During the shut down, many of our Partner Farms, Owners and Adopters stepped up to show their support for our program, which means even more to us now than it did when they became the first of their kind in the nation to support a track-wide retirement program for their horses. At that time, it was a step in the right direction led by the genius of Executive Director Michael Ballezzi and the PTHA Board of Directors. TFH is the preeminent race horse retirement program of any racetrack, and your support helps us keep to our pledge not to turn any eligible horse away. Our TFH program is solid, well respected, and leading the way for other racetracks around the country to support racehorse retirement. We hope that all our horsemen share in the success that their former racehorses do, and continue to raise the bar in safe retirement.
