Pennsylvania Department of Education and Pennsylvania PBS launching Datacasting Pilot to bring school curriculum to homes without internet |
Through datacasting, Pennsylvania PBS and its partners will be able to bridge the digital divide by using public television broadcast signals to distribute educational content to students across Pennsylvania.
According to a recent report from Penn State University on the access to broadband, there are approximately 35,000 households across Pennsylvania that have no access to the internet and there are 350,000 under-connected Pennsylvanians in the state.
Pennsylvania PBS stations are working with the 29 Intermediate Units across the state to coordinate with school districts and educators to distribute content. School Districts, such as Penns Valley Area School District in Centre County, where 40% of students do not have internet connectivity, will be among the first pilot sites for the datacasting initiative.

WQED Launches SOS (Support Our Schools) Project |
|
WQED has launched a new project to support students, teachers and schools as a whole this fall. WQED's SOS (Support Our Schools) is a universally-designed project that engages students for a period of ten days with projects and learning activities that address grade level standards in multiple subject areas.
"Collaborating with local teachers, WQED Education was able to create fun, engaging, project-based lessons that can be accessed at home, and we are so thrilled to share these accessible resources with our local intermediate units, school districts, and statewide partners."

Each project has a series of four mini lessons presented by a Pennsylvania teacher with online website support and printable resources available for all students, teachers and caregivers to access. Projects are age-appropriate and have been matched to Pennsylvania State Standards.
