President's Message

Dear PRS Members, Supporters, and Sponsors,

Summer has arrived! Along with all the growth outside, there has also been a buzz of activity at PRS! We’ve been busy developing new opportunities for PRS members. I am especially pleased that the inaugural Summer Series of virtual CME lectures has received a great response with strong registrations. If you haven’t registered yet, be sure to secure your spot.

Please be sure to renew your PRS membership. I’m proud of what PRS has built for our members. Thanks to you, PRS has been able to fund education and training for Rheumatology Fellows in Training, support training for advanced practice professionals, and keep our members in the know on legislative issues affecting Rheumatology.

Your membership also supports our signature event, the PRS Annual Scientific Meeting. Every year we look forward to the ASM to advance our knowledge and to catch up with fellow PA Rheumatologists in a relaxed social setting.

This year’s Annual Scientific Meeting – at our new venue, Kalahari, in the Poconos – will bring new opportunities for learning and socializing. It will be the perfect time of year to gather in the mountains and kick off the meeting with our first-ever, family-friendly Welcome Gathering. I’m looking forward to exploring new territory!

I wish all of this season’s graduates, moms, and dads joyful celebrations on their special days, and safe travels to all this summer,

Be well,

Irene J Tan, MD, FACR

PRS Spotlight: Four Questions for… Michael Borofsky, MD

Dr. Borofsky is a member of PRS’s Advisory Council, and Chair of the Advocacy Committee. He is a rheumatologist in private practice in Wyomissing, PA. We asked him a few questions about himself and his work:

What would you like the PRS community to know about you?

I feel that each legislative issue we take on is an opportunity for us to make contacts in the private practitioner community and give a group of frustrated physicians a place to develop their political voice. I also want to give academic and employed physicians the same opportunity to find their independent political voice. I want us all to have a better understanding of the business of medicine and our medical environment so that we make better political choices and choose our battles wisely.

What’s your favorite part of being a member of PRS?

My favorite part of joining PRS is working with rheumatologists and other professionals involved in our community and learning from their experiences. I also like the inclusion of the trainee and student community.

How would you describe your day job to a child?

I see people who have problems using their moving parts - legs, arms and others- and help them regain their ability to move and regain their strength.

What are your biggest professional challenges?

  • To maintain my clinical skills to manage multiple complex problems to continue to provide the best solutions for my patients.
  • To protect and expand the availability of high quality treatments for our patients.
  • To maintain the independence and success of our rheumatology group practice.

Thanks, Dr. Borofsky, and thanks for all you do for PRS!

State Budget Soup: How does PRS Fit?

Michael Borofsky, MD, PRS Advocacy Chair

Deborah Ann Shoemaker, PRS lobbyist

We are almost halfway through the first year of this new legislative session. The Pennsylvania state legislature now begins the budget negotiation process.

An overview of the budget process:

1)   House/Senate leaders ask respective committee chairs for “wish list” items detailed within Governor Shapiro’s proposed budget they are willing to advocate for as the budget package moves ahead.

2)   House/Senate leadership review “wish list” with respective party caucus members to finalize their budget negotiation list;

3)   House/Senate Republican/Democratic leaders discuss areas of common ground.

4)   Each chamber goes through the normal legislative process. The passed state budget package goes to the other chamber for review/negotiation/passage.

5)   After House/Senate concurrence, the budget package is sent to the governor for action.

Why detail the state budget process? PRS’ top grassroots advocacy goal is to equip our membership with pertinent information to maximize the effectiveness of grassroots campaigns. Understanding the state budget process assists in understanding legislators- their priorities, focus areas, strengths, weaknesses and their willingness to fall on their swords for important issues. Reviewing voting records and campaign finance reports assists us in preparing our grassroots strategy.

The state legislature will return in the fall with new legislative priorities. We hope our issues fit into that mix.
