Happy Spring!
Dear Penrose Families,

Well, we made it to spring, finally! This month, we have a lot going on from spring break, to hippity-hop activities for our hop-a-thon, Kona Ice day, Academic Awards, Parent/Teacher Conferences, and CMAS testing. How much more can we fit into one month? The good thing about Penrose Elementary School is, we never give up, we challenge ourselves to be our BEST selves every day, and most importantly, we believe in ourselves. As you read the newsletter below, you will find information about all of these activities that will be happening this month.

Sincerely,

Sheryl Gifford-Principal

Guidance Counselors
Mrs. Guasta

I am the mother of four awesome kids and live in Pueblo West with my husband of 17 years. This is my first year as a School Counselor and my tenth school year in education. I have taught Elementary Special Education, 2nd & 4th grade, and 7th-11th grade English. This is my fourth year at Penrose Elementary, and I feel fortunate to be here. Outside school, my favorite things to do are thrift store shopping, gardening, and playing soccer.

Mr. DeSalvo

Mr. DeSalvo has been a Counselor at Penrose Elementary for 10 years. He loves his job and he loves the kids that he gets to work with every day. He has always been a proud Beaver. He grew up in Penrose and attended Penrose Elementary School. He is married to his high school sweetheart, Misty, and they have been together for almost 40 years. He has a daughter, Haily, who teaches kindergarten at American Academy in Parker; a son-in-law, Johnnie who is an airline mechanic; a son, Talon, who is an 8th grader; and a 9-month-old granddaughter, Jaylin. When not with kids, Mr. DeSalvo enjoys going to the gym, riding his mountain bike, hunting, and spending time with his family.
Fourth Grade Teachers
Hello! My name is April Hegarty. This is my first year at Penrose Elementary, but my 7th year as a teacher. I’ve wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. I love helping my students learn and watching them as they gain new information and apply it in their world.
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, including my husband and four children. I believe that it's important to have a work-life balance, and enjoy spending quality time with my loved ones. I also enjoy helping in our family business and educating people on animal care and husbandry.
Hi my name is Ms. Nestman! This is my first-year teaching 4th grade at PES. I have been teaching youth in a variety of learning environments for the past 15 years. The bulk of my experience lies in getting kids outside to explore and discover the world around them through hands-on learning. Seeing children flourish and become self-aware, upstanding community citizens, and life-long learners has inspired me to bring my expertise into the formal classroom to help mold the people of the future.

A little more about me, I grew up in California and moved to Colorado just out of high school. I fell in love with nature and the great outdoors and have made this gem my forever home.  I love our little community and school. You’ll find me out and about at community events- my favorite is the 4th of July parade! I have a sweet old pit-mix named Leeroy Brown, and sassy calico cat named Ren. My partner and I love to explore colorful Colorado and are expecting our first baby- coming August 2023!

The Colorado Measures of Academic Success, or CMAS, is the state summative assessment for language arts, math, science and social studies. CMAS is aligned to the state’s rigorous academic standards and designed to gauge how well students are mastering the standards and are prepared for their next grade.

Why is CMAS Important?

CMAS results provide a picture of student performance to schools, districts, teachers, parents, and the community. Results show how students are progressing academically, which is a key component to ensuring students are on track to graduate prepared for college and career. Teachers use CMAS results to enhance instruction in order to meet individual student needs. Schools and districts use CMAS results to make adjustments to instructional programming for the following year.
