Mary, Mother of the Church
Pope Francis in 2018 added a universal feast to the liturgical calendar for Mary, Mother of the Church on the Monday after Pentecost - this year, May 29. The decree notes "how greatly the promotion of this devotion might encourage the growth of the maternal sense of the Church in the pastors, religious and faithful, as well as a growth of genuine Marian piety." It was Pope St. Paul VI who conferred the title, Mary, Mother of the Church on the Blessed Virgin Mary.

NCR Interviews Phil Downey
National Catholic Reporter in a May 24, 2023 Earthbeat article interviews our own Phil Downey, co-chair with Simone Seym of St. Matthew's Creation Care Green Team. Read about Phil's work with Laudato Trees, a program that facilitates free tree plantings at local parishes and organizations. Earlier this year, Phil received the Canopy Award for Volunteer Service from Casey Trees, a Laudato Trees partner. Congratulations, Phil, and thank you for your service and leadership!
Choir Update
St. Matthew's Schola Cantorum and Contemporary Choir will begin their summer hiatus next week (after Pentecost) and will return on Sunday, September 17 for the Feast of St. Matthew. Our Coro Hispano will sing through the Feast of Corpus Christi (June 11) before its summer hiatus.

"He or She Who Sings ...."
The Schola has openings for experienced singers in all voice parts, especially sopranos and tenors. Contact Thomas Stehle, Pastoral Associate for Liturgy and Director of Music Ministries, for more information or to arrange an audition. Click the image above to hear the Schola in December 2019 in an Advent rehearsal singing Ad te levavi animam meam (Palestrina).
Hear from a Schola member:
“I view the role of the schola and cantors as enhancing the prayerfulness of each service in addition to helping the community participate more fully in each service …. I have most enjoyed helping expose parishioners and guests to the vast variety of church music that they may not have an opportunity to hear on a regular basis - particularly Gregorian chant and early choral music. The Schola [members are] … truly respectful of the Liturgy and how music can enhance it and encourage full participation.” ―Julianne

(Take Five for Faith, el domingo 28 de mayo)

“Getting to know both the people we serve and the volunteers is a privilege. It is inspiring to do this kind of work and realize that so many people care, so many people are living out Jesus’ call to be God’s hands and feet.” ―Roselyn
