“We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies… Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.”- Romans 8:22-23, 26-27

Beloved Holy Spirit,

You are the wellspring of all life and each life. You move in the tiniest microbes, you span the farthest galaxies. You knit us together in the gorgeous, struggling body of creation; you shape us each with particular gifts, needs and relationships. You stream through our interdependence and intersections, revealing the ever-presence of God in diversity, vulnerability, strangeness, wonder. You inspire, conspire, challenge and encourage us to embody the justice and mercy, the peace and love of Christ. You call us to pray.

But in these times or so much unrest, division and fear, we often do not know how. We know that you inspired the first Christians with words of power and faith, and we ask that we might find expression for your life within us. We are moved to remember that you move in us- with groans and sighs, sounds and gestures, beneath and beyond our conscious awareness. Strengthen and support us when we feel overwhelmed, exhausted or afraid. Pray in us, with us, for us. Pray in our silence, our words, our yearning, our actions. We thank you for your advocacy, your intercession and your holy comfort. Continue to search our hearts, we pray, help us do the work you call us to do with joy, and bring us to the fullness of communion that you intend for your creation.

Amen

Long Term Prayers

Pray for: Pray for Allejandro and Jesus, Barbara, Brielle, Dorothy, Elaine, Ellen, Hannah, Judith, Jurek, Lucas, Luz, Stewart, Jen, Bishop Gretchen, and Alice & the Kisiya family. We pray for all devastated by the genocide in Gaza, and for a just peace in Ukraine, Sudan, Haiti, India and Pakistan, and the Holy Land.

Please keep these people and intentions from our long-term prayer list in your own prayers. We hope to keep our intercessions in the liturgy both faithful and fresh, as we persist in prayer for those who need it.

Prayers! Did you know you can submit your prayer requests online? Go to ascensionnyc.org/prayers and type in your prayer request. Be sure to add them. Requests submitted by noon on Thursday will be included in the Sunday bulletin. (Any requests after that will be included in the following Sunday bulletin.)
A Prayer for Spiritual Communion

If you are attending any of our services online, we invite you to use this prayer at communion.

In union, O Lord, with your faithful people at every altar of your Church, where the Holy Eucharist is now being celebrated, I desire to offer to you praise and thanksgiving. I remember your death, Lord Christ; I proclaim your resurrection; I await your coming in glory. Since I cannot receive you today in the Sacrament of your Body and Blood, I beseech you to come spiritually into my heart. Cleanse and strengthen me with your grace, Lord Jesus, and let me never be separated from you. May I live in you, and you in me, in this life and in the life to come. Amen.
