A Word from the Pastor

June 6, 2025

The Solemnity of Pentecost is one of the great feasts of the Church. But what is the meaning of Pentecost, as revealed in the Catholic Church's teachings?

Pentecost is the fulfillment of the Paschal Mystery - the death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ. It marks the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and the birth of the Church. Thus, liturgically it marks the end of the Easter season.

The Holy Spirit descends upon the disciples, uniting them in truth and communion, and empowering them for their mission to the world.

Pentecost is the “convincing

manifestation of Easter to all the nations,” as the disciples are filled with the Spirit and begin proclaiming “the mighty acts of God” in various languages.

Through the gift of the Holy Spirit, the Church is established as the work of the Spirit, “one, holy, catholic and apostolic.” The Spirit guides the Church in truth, strengthens her in faith, and prompts her to service and mission.

The Holy Spirit is the “soul of mission,” drawing us into the mystery of the living God and impelling us to open the doors and go forth to proclaim and bear witness to the Gospel, communicating the joy of faith and the encounter with Christ. The Spirit makes us look to the horizon and drives us to the very outskirts of existence in order to proclaim life in Jesus Christ to every corner of the world.

Pentecost thus represents the fulfillment of Christ's promise to send the Spirit, who will lead the disciples into all truth and empower them for their evangelizing task. The Eucharist celebrated on Pentecost becomes the “Pentecost event” for the faithful, as they receive the Body and Blood of Christ and are filled anew with the Holy Spirit.

We rejoice in this gift of the Holy Spirit who enlivens our faith, heals our divisions and impels us to continue the mission of Jesus.

Come, Holy Spirit, and fill the hearts of your faithful people. Enkindle within us the fire of your love. Send us forth by your Spirit so that through us you will renew the face of the earth.

In one Heart,

Fr. Ron

Gospel Reading

John 20:19-23

Jesus appears to his disciples and gives them the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Background on the Gospel Reading

The season of Easter concludes with today's celebration, the feast of Pentecost. On Pentecost we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles gathered in the upper room in Jerusalem; this event marks the beginning of the Church. The story of Pentecost is found in the Acts of the Apostles, today's first reading. The account in today's Gospel, taken from the Gospel of John, also recounts how Jesus gave the gift of the Holy Spirit to his disciples. There is no need to try to reconcile these two accounts to each other. It is enough to know that, after his death, Jesus fulfilled his promise to send to his disciples a helper, an advocate, who would enable them to be his witnesses throughout the world.

We previously heard today's Gospel on the second Sunday of Easter. At that time, we also heard the passage that follows, which describes Jesus' appearance to Thomas. In that context, we were led to reflect on belief and unbelief.

In the context of the feast of Pentecost, this reading reminds us about the integral connection between the gifts of peace and forgiveness and the action of the Holy Spirit. Jesus greets his disciples with the gift of peace. Jesus then commissions his disciples to continue the work that he has begun, “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” As he breathes the Holy Spirit upon them, Jesus sends his disciples to continue his work of reconciliation through the forgiveness of sins.

This Gospel reminds us that the Church is called to be a reconciling presence in the world. This reconciling presence of Christ is celebrated in the Church's sacramental life. In the Sacrament of Baptism, we are washed clean from sin and become a new creation in Christ. In the Sacrament of Penance, the Church celebrates the mercy of God in forgiving sins. This reconciling presence is also to be a way of life for Christians. In situations of conflict, we are to be agents of peace and harmony among people.

Send Us Your Spirit

Well-known Catholic composer Dan Schutte gives us this reflective song on the influence of the Holy Spirit in our lives and world.

Ye Olde Garage Sale-

This Sunday

The Ye Olde Garage will be holding its semi-annual 1/2 off entire shoppe sale this Sunday, June 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Not only for the Sunday Sale, but for the ENTIRE MONTH OF JUNE. Yes, that is correct. Everything in the entire shoppe will be half off. The Ye Olde Garage is closed in the month of July for renovations, so we are trying to reduce the inventory to make room for new items when we re-open in August.

Follow the Garage Sale signs to the northeast parking lot. Look for the American flag. That is where we will be.

Family Mass

Our next Family Mass will be next Sunday, June 15 at 9:00 am in the church.

This will be Father’s Day, so bring Dad along for a special prayer.
