Major Projects To Positively Impact Community

Peoria Zoo Improvements, Golf Learning Center Construction, Detweiller Riverside Lease and East Bluff Community Center Partnership all approved

at June 26 Board Meeting

PEORIA (June 27, 2024) – The Peoria Park District had a full agenda at last night's Park Board Meeting that greenlit many substantial projects for the District and its collaborators.

"The alignment of key District commitments in this single meeting marks a significant public milestone for several critical projects that the District has been diligently developing, some over the course of several years," stated PPD Executive Director Emily Cahill. While some of those are PPD initiatives, others are collaborative projects for the District. "The critical work the District undertakes for the community cannot be accomplished by the District alone," Cahill continued. "A significant part of our success lies in the essential partnerships we form within the communities we serve."

The projects include:

Architectural Services for Peoria Zoo Improvements

Trustees approved a contract for design services and construction administration services in the amount of $2,048,950 focused on improvements to the original elements of the Zoo incluing the Tropics Building and the tiger enclosure. As the owner and operator or Peoria Zoo, this District oversees the contracts and enhancements but the funds will come from funds raised and stewarded by Peoria Zoological Society. This is the first step in a new Capital Campaign for the Peoria Zoo to include renovations of the Tropics/Conservation building and the Tiger exhibit. Once contracted, Torre Design will work with key stakeholders to identify the scope of each project before fundraising starts.

Golf Learning Center Addition and Renovation

The Peoria Park District formally accepted a bid from Peoria Metro Construction in the amount of $4,466,300 which will support renovation of the facliity into a golfing entertainment hub which will include a two story, 21-bay electronic driving range, full-service restaurant, bar, and simulator golf room. for the project. The staff anticipates the new center to be completed in Spring 2025.

Detweiller Riverside Building Lease

In 2024, the Peoria Park District issued a Request for Proposals for the Detweiller Riverside Clubhouse building. The Board accepted a proposal from the 22 Veteran Artists group to lease the clubhouse at 8412 N Galena Road. The District believes that leasing to this group at this specific location will facilitate healing through social gatherings and art. The artwork will serve as a bridge to help others understand the internal struggles that many veterans face daily.

East Bluff Community Center (EBCC)

The Peoria Park District has agreed to sign a Letter of Intent to Collaborate on the sustainability of the East Bluff Community Center (EBCC). This collaboration involves the Center, the District, Greater Peoria Family YMCA, and Heartland Health Center. Through this letter, the organizations commit to exploring a partnership that supports EBCC's efforts to provide diverse programming and activities focused on recreation, wellness, education, community, and workforce development. Additionally, they will allocated the resources to develop a formal Memorandum of Understanding.
