Peoria Park District and City of Peoria to Host Press Conference on April 10

Event Will Commemorate $600,000 in Trewyn Park Improvements
PEORIA (April 4, 2023) – The public is invited to join representatives from the Peoria Park District and City of Peoria on Monday, April 10th at 10:30 am for a press conference and ribbon cutting to celebrate the improvements at Trewyn Park, 2219 S. Idaho Street. Improvements include a new shelter, playground, basketball courts, and accessible paths.

In January 2022, the City of Peoria voted unanimously to allocate $600,000 toward the renovations at the park located at 2219 South Idaho Street in Peoria. Funding for the improvements was made possible through the Community Development Block Grant CARES Act.

Mayor Ali celebrated the success of the additions, stating “we are proud to have this partnership with the Park District to provide these additions to Trewyn Park, one of the oldest parks in Peoria. These improvements will ensure that the park will be used by community members for years to come.” The event kicks off Community Development Week for the City of Peoria.

“The funding from the City allowed us to make really critical improvements to the park on a faster timeline than we would’ve been able to do on our own,” stated Peoria Park District Board of Trustees President Robert L. Johnson, Sr. “We are so grateful for the collaborative spirit that made this possible!”

After City approval, the Park District worked to gather public input on the playground designs, including feedback from children at Trewyn School. Over the course of 2022, the Park saw several improvements including a new shelter with electricity and new picnic tables, a playground area featuring poured-in-place surfacing and accessible play elements, relocated basketball courts, grading and accessible paths.

“We all know that parks are safe places and these enhancements to Trewyn provide the community with a space to play and spend time together,” Johnson continued. “Programming facilitated by PCCEO Early Head Start and Peoria Grown’s Market 309 provide additional support to our shared patrons.”
