PEORIA, IL (May 28, 2025) –– The Peoria Park District will hold a special recognition in honor of fallen park police officers during its Board of Trustees Meeting on Wednesday, May 28th at 6:00pm at the Bonnie W. Noble Center for Park District Administration. Board President Robert L. Johnson Sr. will lead a tribute to those officers who gave their lives in the line of duty, recognizing the courage and sacrifice of police officers who serve our community.
Each year on May 15, the American flag is lowered to half-staff in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day; a solemn occasion to remember the law enforcement officers who have died protecting the peace and safety of our communities. President Johnson will ask that this evening's moment of silence be dedicated to the memory of those brave individuals.
Peoria Park District will specifically honor the four officers who lost their lives while serving the District throughout its 130-year history:
- Constable Arthur Smith, End of Watch: June 12, 1922
- Officer Charles DeBolt, End of Watch: July 2, 1924
- Officer David Gaul, End of Watch: August 4, 1937
- Officer Charles Barden, End of Watch: August 24, 1938
"Those called to service as police officers do so out of a deep commitment to keeping us safe," said President Johnson. "Here at Peoria Park District, their presence in our parks and facilities helps foster safe and welcoming spaces for all. Their loyalty and courage deserve our deepest gratitude."
All Peoria Park District board meetings are open to the public and can be viewed on the District’s YouTube channel.
