Back-To-School Edition - 2022
|
|
Check out our Back-To-School website for information about breakfast and lunch, bus passes, lockers, building maps, the parking lot, photo IDs, LifeTouch portraits for the yearbook, school supplies, Chromebooks, and clubs and activities.
As always, our first day of school on Thursday, September 1st, will be dedicated to our 9th Grade Orientation. We will welcome all students on Friday, September 2nd.
Construction
Construction is progressing nicely. A section of our science wing is complete and the difference is amazing. Construction will continue through the Summer of 2024. What does this mean for staff and students? We will adapt and be flexible while construction is taking place around us. Sections of the building will be off limits during construction. Fences and barriers will be in place to prevent students from entering active construction areas. The latest information on East’s construction progress can be found on this construction update document.
Cell Phone Policy
This past school year we noticed a significant rise in students using their cell phones during class time, which greatly impacted student engagement and learning. We are committed to making sure our environment is centered around learning. Responsible use of cell phones is one of several strategies that we will work together on to recreate a strong culture of learning. We look to partner with our students, families and staff to ensure that teaching and learning is our top priority. On September 6th, we will review our cell phone expectations with students. We will also share these expectations with families.
Finally, I want to highlight three areas that will support family and student engagement: communication, involvement and support. I encourage all students, parents, and guardians to get connected and stay informed by regularly reading the Purgolder Press (emailed weekly to students, staff, and families and archived on the East Website), following us on Twitter (@MadisonEastHS), Facebook (@purgolderpride), Instagram (@purgolderpride) and using the school website. As always, reach out to teachers, support staff or our administrative team with any questions or concerns.
Also, please note that this year's Back-To-School Night is on Monday, September 19th. I look forward to seeing you there.

Attendance and Excused Absences

Did you know attendance in the first month of school can predict good attendance through the school year?
Half the students who miss 2-4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school. Find out more on the MMSD Attendance Website. Students can be reported absent by emailing the student's Neighborhood Office Secretary, calling the attendance line, or filling out the online request form.

Safety, Security & Policies

|
Various district resources are available online regarding safety, security, emergency procedures and Standard Response Protocol.
The Behavior Education Plan (BEP) outlines our strategy to support positive student behavior and implement successful systems of support and intervention for students. The BEP is intended to help turn mistakes into learning experiences and to pair consequences with additional support. Page 14 of the BEP provides an overview of the district's progression of discipline.

MMSD will continue to highly recommend wearing masks indoors and on buses, and will not require masks for the start of the 2022-23 school year. However, masks may again be required under the guidance of health officials or if warranted by local COVID conditions. MMSD will continue to have universal health practices in place such as frequent handwashing, cleaning, and staying home when ill. For a complete update of current MMSD COVID-19 safety protocols, please visit the MMSD COVID-19 Safety Protocol website. MMSD continues to strongly encourage all individuals eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine to do so by visiting one of many local vaccine clinics currently available.

The District does not generally provide transportation to high school students. Rather, the District and City of Madison work cooperatively to ensure that Madison Metro Transit routes are available to students as a primary means of transportation. District-provided Madison Metro bus passes are available for students who:
- Reside within the boundaries of the school attendance area
- Reside more than one and one-half (1.5) miles from their attendance area school.
- Have demonstrable financial need, including qualifying for the Free & Reduced Meal Program.
Students who qualify for a district-funded bus pass can fill out this google form to request one and then then pick it up in their Neighborhood Office before school, during lunch, or after school. Students can ride the bus for free during the first weeks of school until they receive their bus pass.

Preparing for staff and students
|
Various construction phases have seen immense progress over the past month in anticipation of students and staff returning for the fall semester. Inside the school, numerous interior finish elements such as science lab casework, painting, ceilings, floor finishes, and ceramic tiling have been installed in the first of many academic renovation phases. Students and staff will be welcomed back to the freshly renovated classrooms on the third floor.
On the exterior, crews continue to pour concrete foundations, set structural steel, and construct new masonry walls to enclose the new cafeteria, music area, and multipurpose room additions.
|
|
|
Ongoing construction activities include:
- Renovating the first phase of English classrooms on the second floor
- Starting the first phase of lower-level locker room renovations
- Building the structural elements for the new cafeteria, music area, and multipurpose room additions
- Continuing with masonry restoration work on the interior sides of the building façade
We will continue to update our Building Maps with new room numbers as phases are completed.
