On the Eastside, we accept that our students may sometimes need more from us and that we must work together as staff, students, families and community members to meet those needs. We all want the same things for our students and seeing most students thrive will never be enough. Feel free to

So many of our students find success in and out of the classroom. Last month, our very own Desiray Meade sang the national anthem in the State Capitol Rotunda at the State of Education Address where State Superintendent emphasized collaboration for educational equity
. We are so proud to have students like Desiray representing the Eastside!

Take a tour of Ms. Thao’s classroom. In this space, students are welcomed by her energy, care, and language development occurs in real ways because of a deep knowledge of students’ identities. This is the true meaning of Learning Partnerships.

Vaping: New Health Concerns
|
A note from School Nurse, Bonnie Ohm, APNP.
One in 5 teens are using e-cigarettes, often referred to as vaping. This is done by heating a liquid and inhaling the aerosol. Originally teens were vaping high doses of nicotine (one pod is equal to 20 traditional cigarettes), but now they also vape marijuana/THC.
|
|
|
Recent reports show that some youth (most being in their 20s) are experiencing long lasting lung damage and experience shortness of breath, chest pain, fever, vomiting and fatigue from vaping. In these cases, most of the vape pods were bought off the street as opposed to in a store. Pods sold on the street are not controlled, and it is unknown what chemicals are added, or the amount of nicotine or THC in the product. This is very frightening, and we want our students, to be healthy and safe.
At East High School we are focused on:
- Keeping teens safe
- Understanding why they are using a substance
- Facilitating resources to assist with anxiety, depression and stressors in student’s lives
- Parents with concerns about their students should reach out to their primary care practitioner, school nurse, school social worker, school psychologist, or counselor.
