Student Spotlight
Congratulations to EHS scholars Adam Agans, Jackson Anderson, Karuna Bhat, Joshua Jacobson and Mateo Vargas-Nuñez who were recognized on November 25th by the Board of Education for exemplifying the culture of excellence embedded in our Strategic Framework through their participation in the High School Science Research Internship (SRI) Program.

We are also so proud of our East students who were recognized at the National Merit Ceremony with the MMSD school board in November. Congratulations to Owen Jenssen, Grace Pietruszka, Joshua Puglielli, Olivia Siebert, Karuna Bhat, Zoey Yandell. These students join about 16,000 other high school seniors across the country who were named as semifinalists for the prestigious scholarship. To become a Finalist, the Semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the Semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. Finalists will be announced this spring.
Staff Shout Out
Silvia Gomez de Soriano, thank you for the AMAZING job arranging for over 100 Latinx families to come to East for Parent/Teacher Conferences. Thank you for building a crazy-impressive system that welcomed these parents into our school, that provided translators in multiple rooms at once, that connected teachers and teams with all of these families. You not only change kids' lives on a daily basis, you are changing the culture of East in a powerful way!
-Tom Kanies, 9th Grade Academy and On-Track Coordinator

Some students will be taking the ACCESS language proficiency assessment beginning Dec. 2nd. ESL (English as a Second Language) Advisors and Instructional Coaches threw them a big party to help students set goals, practice, and remind them that they have all the skills they need.
Opportunities for
Student Involvement
At the November Club Fair students were able to learn more about opportunities to get involved in various clubs that East offers.
East brought 21 students to the DECA Emerging Leaders Conference in the Wisconsin Dells. Around 700 students from around the state met to network, and work on leadership, teamwork and time management skills! Students continue to meet with mentors from American Family, Summit, Heartland, XP Realty and more to prepare for the January 11th Competition.

Fine Arts at East
In November, Dane Arts Mural Arts collaborated with our students at the Goodman Community Center in The Seed to Table Transition Academy to channel their inner Shepard Fairey and create self portraits that model the iconic Barack Obama HOPE poster. DAMA is a public art program that trains local artists to become community artists who use mural-making to beautify neighborhoods and make a difference in the lives of youth. DAMA empowers artists, neighborhoods and youth to become change agents, collaborating on projects which physically and socially improve communities.

Former East Athlete Excels
Beyond High School
Pictured is former East Side High and current Eastern Illinois guard Deang Deang (25) as he tries to run past Wisconsin guard Kobe King (23) during a college basketball game between the University of Wisconsin Badgers and the Eastern Illinois University Panthers on November 8, 2019 at the Kohl Center in Madison, WI. The photo was taken by Lawrence Iles (Icon Sportswire) who is currently a long-term sub in the Math Department at East.

The Madison East Boys Basketball Team was also recently featured in the Wisconsin State Journal, stating that "With four returning starters and two other letterwinners, East enters the year listed as high as No. 2 in Division 1 preseason rankings. The Purgolders are favored by Big Eight Conference coaches to earn a repeat title after winning the school’s first outright title in 25 years last season."
