Community Spotlight

Samantha Gove

Samantha Gove is a Junior from Granby, Connecticut and a proud member of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation. Samantha is the President of the Native American and Indigenous Students Association and the Coordinator of the UConn Indigenous Nations Cultural and Educational Exchange (UCINCEE). On top of her roles at NACP, Samantha is working on a research project with Dr. Ryan Talbert examining Native American victims of fatal police encounters, as well as a separate project highlighting Minoritized Languages of the North Atlantic to bring awareness to language revitalization. Recently, she has been named a 2022 Udall, Cohen, and BOLD Scholar, as well as a Newman Civic Fellow. In her time at NACP, she has worked hard to develop a sustained community of Native students on campus. As a Connecticut tribal member, Samantha aspires to foster better relations between the university and local Native communities. After graduation, she hopes to pursue law school to obtain a J.D./M.A. in American Indian Law.
GROUP PROGRAMS
Our tours and enrichment programs guide the learners of today to use disciplinary skills in history and social studies to create enduring understandings, foster independence, and encourage life-long appreciation to become informed and engaged citizens. Every program has built-in opportunities for students to develop and apply skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking, and language arts.

THIRTEEN MOONS PROGRAM

November Moon: Hunting Moon

The “Thirteen Moons” program is an in-depth view of the Pequots relationship to the seasons and lifeways. The instructor led program also addresses common Thanksgiving misconceptions and its origin utilizing primary resources for review and open discussion about the “First Thanksgiving”.

THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLES PROJECT:
THE MASHANTUCKET (WESTERN) PEQUOT WOMEN

Indigenous cultural expression, when conveyed on canvas, presents a vibrant story of antiquity and resilience. The Pequot Women exhibition exemplifies the spirited determination, vibrant character, and resilient fortitude of the Mashantucket (Western) Pequot women in both a traditional and contemporary nature.
Cultural Intelligence Workshop 

The four areas of primary focus within MPMRC Cultural Intelligence (CQ) Workshops are Culture-focused Knowledge, Trauma-based Knowledge, Historic Knowledge and Emotional Intelligence with each topic presented from a Native American perspective. Within our MPMRC CQ Workshop, these four learning components are added to an understanding of the science behind, and the potential impacts of, a modern focus upon Cultural Intelligence
Honoring the Veterans Powwow

Join us in honoring and thanking this country’s greatest heroes!
The Honoring the Veterans Powwow unites and honors Native and non-Native Americans who have bravely served side by side in the U.S. Armed Forces for more than 200 years. Drawing nearly 1,000 veterans, active-duty service members, families and members each year, attendees will be immersed in breathtaking performances, dazzling regalia and traditional music as 100 dancers and drummers compete inside the soaring, two-story, glass-encased Gathering Space
Wetu Book Club – Executive Director Series

Join us for the Member Exclusive Wetu Book Club talking circle hosted by the Executive Director of the Pequot Museum, Joshua Carter, for a 2-part discussion about Sherri Mitchell’s book Sacred Instructions: Indigenous Wisdom for Living Spirit – Based Change book. This event is free to Museum Members. Limited seating available. RSVP is required. 
Tahqôk (Autumn) FEAST! 
A Native Thanksgiving Buffet

Join us for our Tahqôk (Autumn) FEAST along with a special edition presentation of our 13 Moon’s-A Traditional Thanksgiving program, giving an in-depth view of our relationship to the seasons and addressing common Thanksgiving misconceptions
