The Hernandez Center
for Adjunctive Cancer Care

Regardless of your spiritual orientation, our hopes and dreams are all the same.  We seek peace, happiness, inner fulfillment and liberation from suffering. Putting sectarian differences and commercialism aside, end-of-year holiday season is the perfect time to attune to the yearnings of our hearts and souls and dive ever more deeply into the specific manifestation of the truth that we each resonate with most strongly.  Christ consciousness is universal, not specific to one spiritual path.  From this perspective, your health care team at Pacific Naturopathic extends joyful blessings and hopes for fulfillment of your dreams.

Newsletters are promotional tools. We have received consistent good feedback on our newsletter as being highly informative and less blatantly promotional than most others.  You may notice a slight change in our presentation -- the columns are the beginning and the promotional items follow the columns.  Within the flow of the advertisements for our products and services you will find inspiration, humor, recipes and more.

This month, Dr. Connie begins by musing on our naturopathic physician roots; Dr. Marcel follows with a thoughtful article on the relationship between chronic illness and spiritual perspective; Dr. Connie then returns with suggestions on healthy holiday treats; and Jane H. offers an insightful article on the energetics of negative thoughts.  Anandini, our favorite acupuncturist, will return to the newsletter next month.

The  Hernandez Center for Adjunctive Cancer Care  articles include a study on the relationship between chemical hair dyes and hair straighteners and breast cancer;  results from a Japanese study investigating the connection between alcohol consumption and cancer and an article on exercise, hormone therapy and prostate cancer.

May all beings be healthy and happy!

Dr. Connie, Dr. Marcel, Dr. Sage, Jane H. and your health care team  at Pacific Naturopathic and the Hernandez Center for Adjunctive Cancer Care

Christmas Eve with Dr. Connie, Dr. Marcel
and Friends at Ananda Palo Alto
What most of our readers do not know is that for many years Dr. Marcel has helped coordinate an annual Christmas Eve service and Nativity scene creche at Ananda Palo Alto.

The evening is profoundly uplifting, inspirational and devotional.  So much so that after the 90-minute service ends, many people in the church are reluctant to break the spell by getting up and leaving -- they linger, basking in the pure, radiant energy and hundreds of candles illuminating the church. The effect of the Christmas Eve service is so deep that it has changed the lives of many attendees.

With gorgeous music, storytelling, angels, kings, and shepherds, there is nothing like this offered anywhere in the Bay Area. Drs. Connie and Marcel invite you to join them in celebrating the coming of Christ consciousness in this holy time of year. Everyone is invited to participate at the close of the service in a lovely devotional candlelight ceremony at the feet of the Holy Family and the baby Jesus.

If you are seeking to find meaning, joy and simplicity of message
in the entire holiday experience,  you need to be there.

When: Tuesday, December 24, 7:30 PM.  Free.
Where: Ananda Temple,  2171 El Camino Real,  Palo Alto, CA 94306   (650) 323-3363
Dr. Connie Muses on
Naturopathic Roots

by Connie Hernandez, ND
For the past two years, I've been collaborating, as chief medical consultant, on the development of an integrated holistic healing center in Makati, on the outskirts of Manila. Our holistic MD is devoted to natural therapies. Founder Elaine Kahn is expansively involved in bioenergetic healing and health coaching. Our staff is trained in vegetarian cooking, massage, lymphatic drainage, immune stimulation and detoxification therapies. Doctor supervised in home and residential protocols range from overnight to 3 or 4 weeks.

I am so very pleased at the degree to which we are able to integrate traditional medicine with functional and vibrational medicine (in other words, to practice naturopathy).  Naturopathy has its roots in Nature Cure, in functional medicine and in vibrational medicine. Modern day practice of naturopathy has expanded into complex and technologically rich testing and therapies, many of which are now utilized by medical doctors trained in Functional Medicine, an approach that looks for the cause, and treats with innovative patient centered scientific approaches.

What Really Matters in Healing

by Marcel Hernandez, ND

It is mid-December, 2019.  I started trying to write this month's article on a couple of different tracks and have abandoned each attempt.  So, I simply stopped trying, became still and quiet, and asked myself, "what is running through my consciousness in this present moment."  When I opened my eyes, I wrote the following in one uninterrupted flow.

Your Thoughts Are Not Your Own
-- And What to do About It

Jane Hernandez, CCHT

Energy is REAL.

That can mean many things. And one of those is that we are always projecting information about ourselves whether we want to or not. Don't believe me? Think this is woo woo? Check out THIS science website if  you're skeptical.

But let's assume you go along with my claims. What does that mean about what you're communicating?  What private information do people glean from you that you are NOT saying. Think about it, it's almost as if your mind is being read and that is not a situation any of us want.

And the kicker is that we say worse things to our self than to anyone else. Negative self talk is rampant in all of us and it does absolutely no good for our self-image or the opinion others have of us. Not fair.

So, what can you do about all your negative self-talk?

The Centurion for Joint Pain Relief
(A "Tesla Recharging Station for Humans")

Jane Hernandez, our resident EFT and hypnotherapy practitioner, got immediate relief from knee pain

PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Frequency) technology was approved by the FDA in 1979 and has been used for the past 50 years to treat various conditions such as non-union bone fractures, rotator cuff tendinitis and peripheral nerve regeneration.

Documented studies indicate that PEMF Devices can be effective for treating osteoarthritis. PEMF treatment can reduce pain and swelling and have overall beneficial effects on the cardiovascular and autonomic nervous system.

Drs. Marcel and Connie thought to try a PEMF device for these purposes, and came home from last month's conference with the Centurion, a ring shaped PEMF device. Dr. Marcel and Jane (Dr. Marcel's sister and our EFT practitioner) tried it on their knees. Dr. Connie tried it on a threatening frozen shoulder. The research documented efficacy over a month's period of time, but all three of us felt an increase in relaxation and got some immediate relief from joint pain with the first 30 minute treatment. We are all eager to see the effects of the suggested two treatments daily.

Try a treatment in the office yourself. (Contraindicated for those with pacemakers,  electronic stimulators, any magnetic or metal implants, and stents. Inadvisable in the first month of pregnancy.)  $30 for 30 minutes.

To reserve a treatment time please phone 650-961-1660

NEW:
Our Favorite Toothbrush:  We LOVE it!
Makes Teeth Feel Professionally Cleaned

Do you like the feel of your teeth
after getting them cleaned professionally?

As health professionals, we are well aware of the impact periodontal disease can have on our hearts and other body systems.  One stunning statistic is that 91% of patients with heart disease also have gum disease.  Researchers have implicated gum disease in a number of other conditions, including Alzheimer's, diabetes 2, pancreatic cancer and chronic kidney disease.

Knowing this, over the years we have tried a variety of toothbrushes -- various electric ones included.  No one toothbrush or cleaning system has ever met our expectations -- until now.

At a recent medical conference, one of the booths was demonstrating the cleaning effects of the Kyoui (pronounced kee-wee, like the fruit) Sonic 3000 System.  The presenter must have been a good salesman because he convinced us, and we purchased two of them.

The system comes with three brush heads -- all of them angled to reach the corners and and back of teeth.  One angled head cleans the surface of the teeth. They recommend using this during the day.  Another angled head cleans between the teeth and massages the gums.  They recommend using this at night.  The third head helps remove plaque and tartar off the gum line and hard to reach areas.  They say to use this one once a week.

Here's what we like:  The angled brush heads do reach places that regular toothbrushes do not.  The toothbrush handle is slimmer and lighter than other electric toothbrushes.  One charge last up to 40 days.  It is 100% waterproof.   Most important, our teeth feel really, really, clean after brushing, like we just had a professional cleaning.  No feeling of tartar build up.

Here's what we had to get adjusted to:   It is a whole new way to clean your teeth and we had to become adjusted to the speed at which the toothbrush vibrates.  We also learned that we needed to press the brush very lightly against our teeth, with much less force than a regular toothbrush.  The first few days our thought was, "Wow!  This is intense!" After a week of use, even Dr. Connie, who has very sensitive teeth, looked forward to her daily brushings. We also had to get adjusted to the price -- it wasn't cheap. But after using the Kyoui system, we are grateful that it is available and we are completely on board with it.

Price:  Although the Kyoui Sonic 3000 System retails for $249.99 on-line, when we do a bulk order we get a huge discount and can offer it through our office for $150 plus tax.

How to order:  Phone the front desk (650-961-1660) and tell them you want one.  They will ask for your credit card number.  Your card will not be charged until we place the order. The toothbrushes should arrive within seven to ten business days.

FIT (Food Inflammation Test) TEST:
Kits Now Available From Our office

At a recent medical conference we attended we stopped by one of the booths to discuss advances in allergy testing.  We were so highly impressed with the technology behind this test that Dr. Marcel decided to pay for and do one of the tests on himself.

Food sensitivities affect more than 100 million people worldwide. Food sensitivities cause a range of illness and symptoms, including skin rashes and chronic intestinal diseases.

The FIT Test is a patented, multi-pathway delayed food sensitivity test. The test uses new technology that measures both IgG and Immune Complexes, the most common food-related pathways in the body. The FIT Test measures sensitivities to up to 132 different foods and additives spanning all major food groups. Food elimination based on the FIT Test results reduces symptoms a patient is experiencing.

The FIT Test yields many benefits, including: uncovering which foods are causing inflammation and disease, developing a personalized nutritional guide, and improving a patient's state of health and energy levels. The test is the most sensitive food test available using new patented technology.

A clinical study showed the FIT test helped people with:

* Anxiety and depression
* Bloating and stomach pain
* Inability to lose weight
* Impotence/libido
* Fatigue/insomnia
* Joint pain
* Constipation/diarrhea
* Sugar craving

The FIT test is available from our office for $325.  We only ordered five kits for this initial offering. Reserve yours now by phoning us at 650-961-1660.
Included in the price is a color-coded report showing foods with highest sensitivities, a personalized 7-day rotation diet and an app to help you choose appropriate foods.

Note:  You must be a patient at Pacific Naturopathic to participate in this promotion.

Fast Acting Muscle and Joint Relief Gel
Really Works as Advertised!

Also discovered at a booth at a recent medical conference...

Both Dr. Connie and Dr. Marcel have minor musculoskeletal challenges.  In his spiel to us, the company salesman told us a single application would provide immediate pain relief.  We thought, "yeah, sure.  Another snake-oil salesman."  So Connie bared her frozen shoulder, I applied a layer of the gel, and within seconds her pain had lessened noticeably. We were sold.

From the company brochure:  "If you've scoured the shelves at your local store for the ultimate pain relief cream, you know that a lot of them just don't get the job done. You've tried a variety of products for muscle and joint pain relief without success; until now. Relief Rx is a new kind of relief. This proprietary blend of natural herbal ingredients gently absorbs into the skin to provide comfort when and where you need it most. Packaged for your busy lifestyle in a convenient on-the-go tube, just one generous dab of Relief Rx is what your body needs to combat muscle and joint stress."

Ingredients include white willow bark, hemp oil, aloe vera gel, and trace minerals.

Sold for $30 on line plus tax and shipping.   Available in our office for $25 plus tax.

REVISITING:

Ionic Detoxification  Foot Baths in Our Office!

For years we resisted this form of therapy thinking it too woo-woo for our patients.  Then the manufacturer showed us before and after heavy metal testing results performed on foot bath patients.  We were impressed!

Dr. Connie experiences ionic foot bath at a conference

How long are the sessions?

Sessions last 30 minutes. Patients can just sit and relax, read or doze during the session.

What will a person experience?

Nothing except a warm water foot soak during treatment.  Afterward, people may experience a pleasant tingling sensation in the feet. Most people also experience a deep relaxation effect and for some, better sleep.  Often people experience more energy and alertness and a clearing of brain fog.

How often should a person receive treatment?

Any detoxification program has a cumulative effect with repeated treatments.  However, each individual session provides benefits. We offer discount packages for people who desire sustained positive effects. Ideally, people should receive three treatments a week separated by one or two days.

What times are available for treatment?

Any time the office is open.

How much do treatments cost?

Single Session:            $50
6 Session Package:      $255 ($42.50 per treatment, a 15% discount)
12 Session Package:    $480 ($40 per treatment, a 20% discount)
* Package purchases must be paid at the time of scheduling.

Myers Cocktail:
Safe, Powerful Effective

The Myers Cocktail has been around for more than 40 years and is the most popular IV cocktail in our clinic.  Read this detailed information sheet and you will see why.

Want to learn more about the Myers Cocktail?  Alan Gaby, MD, has written the definitive, easy-to-read  MONOGRAPH  about it.

Please phone 650-961-1660 for more information.

Glutathione: You've heard of it,
so here are the facts:

(Dr. Connie's comments:)

As n oted in Musings, chemosensitivity, radiofrequency sensitivity, Lyme Disease, and other multisystemic chronic conditions all have in common oxidative stress and the formation of free radicals in the body. Oxidative stress leads to mitochondrial damage, cancer, Alzheimers, Type 2 diabetes, aging and more.

Nutrients such as C, E and alpha lipoic acid are powerful antioxidants, but are destabilized after fulfilling their antioxidant functions. Glutathione restabilizes these nutrients. Glutathione is the body's master antioxidant. It is protective of immune cells, aids detoxification in the liver, slows aging, allows the body to rebuild and repair.

For these and other reasons, we offer Glutathione I.V.s in our office, often after a after Myer's Cocktail but also by itself. Patients report increased sensory awareness and feeling refreshed after a glutathione IV.

Intravenous Glutathione is our most powerful way to introduce glutathione into the body, though we do also use oral liposomal glutathione (available in our office), and oral N Acetyl Cysteine (NAC),  which is a precursor to glutathione.

About food:
Dr. Marcel's Vegan Kabocha ( Pumpkin) Pesto

-- Perfect for a holiday pot luck

Extremely easy to make

A little-known bit of information about Dr. Marcel is that he is an excellent ethnic cuisine health food chef whose services are requested at dinner parties and fundraising events.

He developed this recipe at a close friend's home who happened to have a kabocha that they didn't know what to do with.  This dip can be made with any pumpkin or squash.

Ingredients

-- Small steamed or boiled and mashed kabocha pumpkin
-- 4-5 cloves mashed or very finely minced garlic
-- ½ very finely minced medium onion (a sweet onion would be ideal)
-- ¼ to 1/3 cup olive oil, more or less
-- juice of ½ lemon
-- ¼ tsp hot sauce (only for depth, not to make it hot)
-- salt and pepper
-- paprika

1. Cut kabocha into eighths and boil until a fork penetrates the skin with little resistance.  Put into a colander and allow to cool for about ½ hour.

2. Using a large serving spoon, scrape out the pumpkin meat and discard the skin.

3. Combine all ingredients, mash and blend until smooth.  Keep in fridge, but serve close to room temperature.

Guaranteed to be a hit at any gathering.

ENJOY!

Breast Thermography at
Pacific Naturopathic

- a true naturopathic evaluation -

thermography
Breast thermography is very much in line with the naturopathic principles of "above all, do no harm", and prevention of disease and promotion of wellness.

Breast thermography does not carry the risks associated with mammograms. The breast tissue is not compressed. There is no radiation. The exam is done via a specialized camera which reads temperature differentials between the breasts and looks at vascular structures. Identifying areas of high temperature, or areas where new blood vessels are forming, we can see breast health issues developing. Seeing these issues, we can seek underlying causes and treat imbalance early on, before a disease has the chance to run its course.

Breast thermography is offered on most Wednesdays at Pacific Naturopathic.

My Grandfather's Natural Wisdom

by Marcel Hernandez, ND
Dr. Antonio Hernández de Leon
There must be a genetic component in my choosing to be a naturopathic doctor.  My grandfather was a pharmacist in Cuba in the mid-1900s who showed major disdain for pharmaceutical medicine.

He was a member of the Cuban Naturalist Association and on May 28, 1926, he gave a keynote speech at the Association's annual meeting where he espoused the benefits of natural medicine and expressed concern about  chemical approaches to well-being. Fortunately, my father kept the transcript of his address and translated it into English.  In the coming weeks, I will continue to publish quotes from this speech.

"I advise all of you to use  pharmaceutical products as little as possible because an old maxim states, 'what is good for the liver may be bad for the spleen ."'

Check Future Openings
(then click on "Availability")

December produce we harvested from the orchard
At our 1991 naturopathic physician graduation ceremony from Bastyr University, the faculty joked that they should graduate Drs. Connie and Marcel because they would build a healing retreat in Hawaii.

In 1999, we purchased property on the Big Island, planted herbs and fruit and nut trees, and later opened an integrated clinic on the property. We were able to offer naturopathic care, including infrared saunas, hot and cold water therapies, colonics and more.

The clinic was in operation until we were closed down by the County of Hawaii for practicing healing on agricultural land without a special use permit.  We applied for the permit in 2009, and for the last 10 years have met requirement after requirement (back permitting all pre-existing structures to California standards, ensuring some handicap accessibility, paving parking spaces, and so on and so on.)

We are delighted to announce that we have finally received our permit! We are imagining future retreats at PNRC, but, for now, we and our patients are here in Silicon Valley, and Pacific Naturopathic Healing Retreat Center continues to operate as a vacation rental. Check our online calendar. (And Drs Connie and Marcel do see patients at PNRC when on island.)

C heck our VACATION RENTAL CALENDAR   and see if there is an opening that works for you.

What We Offer  at the  Hernandez Center
for Adjunctive Cancer Care

There is light in the darkness

Our cancer patients often ask us to give them an estimate of the effectiveness of therapy at the Hernandez Center for Adjunctive Cancer Care. We respond that  our entire focus is on helping our patients stay healthy, upbeat and positive.

The truth is that the botanical and nutritional therapies we offer (including  intravenous vitamin C), although 'adjunctive' in nature, have powerful documented actions in decreasing inflammation, reducing tumor load and attacking cancer stem cells.

Our mind/body approaches are focused on transformation of experience.  And our bodywork approaches help reduce muscular pain, resolve lymph drainage problems and relieve stress.

The hope we offer is not that of a miraculous cure,
although we are definitely open to miracles,
but the hope of a life lived to the fullest in dignity
and understanding, for however long that may be.

Study links breast cancer to hair dye, chemical hair straighteners

by  Rosie McCall

Women who regularly use permanent hair dye could be increasing their risk of breast cancer up to 60 percent, according to scientists writing in the International Journal of Cancer.

A study based on the medical records of more than 45,000 women found a positive correlation between permanent hair dye and breast cancer-particularly among those who are black.
While the paper is based on patterns and trends and, as such, doesn't confirm a direct cause, it adds to research suggesting there may be carcinogens lurking in commonly used beauty products.

Even light alcohol consumption linked to higher cancer risk in Japan

Masayoshi Zaitsu, Takumi Takeuchi, Yasuki Kobayashi, Ichiro Kawachi

In a study conducted in Japan, even light to moderate alcohol consumption was associated with elevated cancer risks. In the study published early online in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, the overall cancer risk appeared to be the lowest at zero alcohol consumption.

Other I.V. Therapies Offered at Pacific Naturopathic and the Hernandez Center

--I.V. therapy is not just for cancer patients--

Many people have already heard about intravenous vitamin C as a complementary cancer therapy to help stimulate the immune system as well as being directly cytotoxic to cancer cells. This is the most common therapy we use at the Hernandez Center for our cancer patients.
