Strengthening American capacity for effective engagement
俗语 from Xi Jinping's Speeches
xiū qī xiāng guān

Meaning: to share the same interests; to be closely related

Original: 疫情再次证明,我们生活在一个地球村,各国休戚相关、命运与共。我们必须团结合作、共克时艰,共同守护人类健康美好未来。

Translation: "The pandemic proves once again that we live in one global village, where countries stand to rise and fall together. We must stick to solidarity and cooperation as we go through this difficult time and jointly work for a healthier and brighter future for humanity" (

This week, we are highlighting a recent article focusing on the author Peter Hessler. Because of his widely acclaimed writing on China, Hessler is described as "the one American most celebrated for connecting with China."

The original article was published in Chinese, which we always recommend. An English translation is also provided by Sixth Tone.

As Hessler's teaching contract at Sichuan University was unexpectedly cut short, the article reflects on the author's time in China and how China has changed towards foreigners since he began his writing career:
"In some ways, Peter’s first stint in China seems to be a golden age of the past, when foreigners weren’t viewed with mild suspicion by default."
To keep your listening skills sharp, putting on CCTV in the background is always a good choice.
