April Wine Atelier Workshop

The Future of Wine: Climate, Culture, and the Next Generation

guided tasting | climate, place, & perception

What happens to wine when the world around it changes?

Not in theory, but in the glass.

We’ll taste through three side-by-side comparisons designed to make those shifts visible, including a blind Burgundy tasting.

As we taste, we connect it back to the fundamentals:

  • how climate influences fruit, acidity, and body
  • how non-fruit character reveals place
  • how structure shapes balance and energy

This is not about predicting the future. It’s about learning how to recognize those shifts as they show up in the glass.

Only 7 seats remaining.

rarita-rarita-pecorello-bianco-calabria-igt-2021 image

Raritá

Pecorello Bianco Calabria IGT 2021

Calabria Italy

$24 retail

Raritá is a good reminder that southern Italy is not only about bold reds and rustic whites. This Pecorello comes from Calabria’s coastal south, where warmth gives the wine generosity, but the sea keeps it from feeling heavy.

Varietal: 100% Pecorello, a native Calabrian white grape known for combining rounder texture with citrusy lift.

Vinification

Made in stainless steel to preserve freshness and clarity, with enough lees contact to soften the edges and give the wine a more settled, easygoing feel in the glass.

Tasting Notes

Lemon peel, yellow apple, and white peach, with a light almond note underneath. The palate is smooth and lightly textured, with gentle freshness and a clean, unfussy finish.

A nice shift if you usually reach for something like Sancerre. A little more body, a little softer, but still fresh enough to keep you coming back.

gavalas-crete-wines-gavalas-crete-wines-fragospito image

Gavalas Crete Wines

“Fragospito” White 2022

Crete Greece

$29 retail

Gavalas’ Fragospito comes from Crete, where warm, sun-soaked days and coastal influence still allow the wines to hold onto freshness and lift. This leans more aromatic than structured, with a really expressive nose that stands out right away.

Varietal: A blend of Malvazia and Moshato Spinas, two indigenous Cretan white varieties. Aromatic, citrus-driven, and naturally high-acid in style.

Vinification

Fermented in stainless steel to stay clean and focused, letting the aromatics and acidity carry the wine rather than oak or richer celler treatment.

Tasting Notes

White florals, citrus, and fresh apple with some stone fruit underneath. Bright and high-toned on the palate, with clean acidity and a lifted finish.

Aromatic, crisp, and clean. Exactly the kind of white you want when it's warm out.

clos-venturi-clos-venturi-1769-rouge-2023 image

Clos Venturi

“1769” Rouge 2023

Corsica France

$39 retail

Clos Venturi has become one of the names to know in Corsica, farming at altitude and drawing out the island’s more lifted, aromatic side rather than forcing weight or power. The 1769 Rouge plays an important role in this flight: it shows how island reds can still feel fresh, vibrant, and completely at home in warmer weather.

Varietal: Primarily Sciaccarellu and Niellucciu, two Corsican varieties that often bring red fruit, herbs, spice, and a naturally lighter-footed profile than many mainland reds.

Vinification

Handled gently to preserve fragrance and freshness, with restrained extraction and neutral aging that keeps the wine supple, vivid, and easy to drink rather than pushing it toward heaviness.

Tasting Notes

Wild strawberry, red cherry, dried herbs, and a touch of peppery spice. The palate is light to medium-bodied, with soft tannins, bright acidity, and a clean, savory finish.

Shows how fresh island reds can be: light, chillable with just enough grip on the finish to keep it grounded. Easy to drink all afternoon in the sun.

girolamo-russo-arina-etna-rosso-2024 image

Girolamo Russo

“A’Rina” Etna Rosso 2024

Etna, Sicily Italy

$44 retail

Girolamo Russo is one of Etna’s reference-point producers, and A’Rina is often the bottle that best shows why people are drawn to the region in the first place. Sourced from multiple high-elevation vineyards on Etna’s volcanic slopes, it brings more structure than the Corsican red, but keeps the same sense of lift and movement that makes it fit naturally in this lineup.

Varietal: Predominantly Nerello Mascalese, Sicily’s signature Etna red grape, known for red fruit, fine tannin, and a more lifted, volcanic expression of structure.

Vinification

Fermented traditionally and aged in neutral oak, giving the wine space to hold onto its floral lift, volcanic savor, and fine-boned structure without burying the fruit under oak influence.

Tasting Notes

Red cherry, dried herbs, and a clear savory edge with a hint of smoked meat. The palate is more structured, with fine tannins, steady acidity, and a long, precise finish.

This is the one for later in the day: more structure, more savory, still light on its feet. Perfect for when the grill gets going and food hits the table.

Regional Spotlight: Mediterranean Wines

There’s a reason Mediterranean and island wines show up more this time of year. Most come from coastal regions where the sun is constant, but the sea keeps things in check. That combination holds onto freshness, keeps the wines in balance, and gives them a natural lift that doesn’t fall flat once the weather warms up.

In the glass, they stay crisp, feel lighter than expected, and don’t wear you out after the first pour.

They’re easy to bring to the patio. Easy to open at the lake. Easy to have on the table when food comes out and people stay longer than planned.

Here’s where this week's wines come from and why they’re in the lineup:

Calabria is the coastal tip of southern Italy, and its whites are some of the most easygoing and overlooked in the country. Aromatic, fresh, and easy to drink.

Crete produces some of Greece’s most expressive whites, built around aromatics and freshness rather than weight. That balance is what makes them so easy to keep drinking once the weather warms up.

Corsica sits between France and Italy and makes reds that feel lighter and more herbal than almost anything from either country. The kind of red you actually want to chill slightly.

Etna sits on Sicily’s volcanic slopes and produces reds with more energy and precision than you might expect.

That’s what ties this flight together. Not just where the wines come from, but how naturally they fit into the way you actually drink this time of year.
