This week we are celebrating International Riesling Day with a focused tasting flight dedicated to one of the most expressive grapes in the wine world.
Most people have had a Riesling at some point. Few have had one that changed their mind about the grape.
Riesling is often misunderstood. Some people remember overly sweet bottles, while others only encounter the driest modern examples. The truth is that Riesling is capable of an incredible range of styles, from bone dry to delicately off-dry to richly sweet. What unites them all is clarity of fruit, vibrant acidity, and a remarkable ability to reflect where the wine was grown.
For this week's $32 flight we are exploring three tiers of Riesling from the Mosel Valley, one of the most celebrated regions for the grape. The wines come from the historic estate S.A. Prüm, known for producing elegant, age-worthy Rieslings that highlight the steep slate vineyards of the Mosel.
S.A. Prüm “Blue” Trocken Dry Riesling 2022
- Crisp citrus, green apple, and slate driven minerality.
S.A. Prüm 'Wehlen Ortswein' Dry Riesling 2019
- Ripe peach, citrus blossom, and layered Mosel minerality.
S.A. Prüm 'Graacher Domprobst' GG Dry Riesling 2017
- Concentrated orchard fruit, citrus oil, and powerful slate mineral depth.
That third wine is worth pausing on. GG (Grosses Gewächs) is Germany's highest classification for dry wine. Think of it as grand cru: restricted to the country's top-ranked vineyard sites, produced under strict standards, and rarely found outside collector cellars or fine dining lists. We have a small allocation of the 2017 and are pouring it as part of this week's flight. If you've been curious about what serious, aged Mosel Riesling actually tastes like in the glass, this is a genuinely rare opportunity.
Whether you already love Riesling or are curious to discover what makes it so special, this flight offers a clear look at how the grape evolves from fresh and approachable to deeply layered and age-worthy.
A GG pour on a tasting flight is rare. A 2017 with nine years of bottle age is more rare. Come taste it in the Tasting Room this Thursday through Sunday while we have it!
Cheers,
The Petit Philippe Team

guided tasting | aroma, flavor & mouthfeel
Why does one wine feel vibrant and refreshing while another feels rich and powerful? What actually creates balance in the glass?
We’ll break down what tasting wine actually means, exploring a simple idea:
taste = aroma + flavor + mouthfeel, and how these elements work together to create balance and character.
You'll see how these elements interact and how they shape the way a wine feels and tastes in the glass. The goal is simple: leave with a clearer understanding of what you're tasting and why.

S.A. Prum is one of the Mosel's most respected houses, farming the storied slate slopes that produce some of Germany's most distinctive white wines. The 'Blue' is their entry-level Trocken bottling, named for its striking label, and it delivers classic Mosel character at an accessible price point.
Varietals: 100% Riesling
Vinification: Fermented in stainless steel to preserve freshness and primary aromatics. Bottled dry (Trocken) with less than 9 g/L residual sugar.
Tasting Notes: Bright lime and green apple drive the nose, with a thread of white peach and a light floral lift. The palate is crisp and focused, with Mosel's signature slate minerality running through the finish. Clean, refreshing, and more layered than the entry price suggests.
Dry and precise, it gives you a clear window into what the grape and the region can do without the weight of older vines or a classified site.

Wehlen is one of the Mosel's most important wine villages, best known as home to the legendary Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard and the blue-slate soils that give the wines their characteristic tension.
This Ortswein (a village-level single-origin bottling) draws from Wehlen's classified vineyards, stepping up from the regional level to offer a more concentrated expression of place. The 2019 vintage brought warm, even ripening across the Mosel, and the results show in the weight and depth of the wine.
Varietals: 100% Riesling
Vinification: Fermented in traditional large-format oak Fuder to add texture and complexity while preserving the site's mineral core. Light residual sugar in the off-dry range provides balance without sweetness.
Tasting Notes: White peach, apricot, and ripe citrus open into a more textural, layered mid-palate. The Wehlen slate comes through as a cool, almost saline minerality that anchors the fruit and extends the finish. More generous than the 'Blue,' but the same precise architecture underneath.

Graacher Domprobst is one of the Mosel's most acclaimed vineyard sites, a south-facing slope of deep blue slate in the village of Graach, directly neighboring Wehlen.
The 'GG' designation stands for Grosses Gewachs, Germany's highest classification for dry wines from top-ranked vineyards. Only producers who belong to the VDP growers' association can use the designation, and the wines must meet strict standards for yield and vinification.
Seven years of bottle age have brought this wine to a compelling place: still vibrant, but with the beginning of that petrol-and-honey development that makes mature Mosel Riesling so extraordinary.
Varietals: 100% Riesling
Vinification: Fermented and aged in Fuder with extended lees contact to build texture and longevity. Bottled dry under the GG protocol. The 2017 vintage delivered ripe, concentrated fruit with strong natural acidity, a combination that rewards patience.
Tasting Notes: Meyer lemon, dried apricot, and white flowers are edged with a beginning note of petrol, the classic signature of aged Riesling. The palate is rich but taut, with layered citrus pith, stony minerality, and a long, precise finish. The kind of wine that keeps evolving in the glass.
The Graacher Domprobst GG is available exclusively as part of this week's flight. Available individually or as part of the complete three-bottle set. Don't miss your opportunity get this grand cru Riesling!

Producer Profile: S. A. Prüm
One of the Mosel’s classic Riesling producers
| |
The Prüm family is one of the historic wine families of the Mosel Valley, with records of vineyard ownership in the region dating back to the 12th century. The modern estate S.A. Prüm was officially founded in 1911 by Sebastian Alois Prüm following the division of a larger family property. Today the winery remains family-run and is led by Saskia Andrea Prüm, representing the latest generation of a long Mosel winemaking lineage.
What distinguishes S.A. Prüm is its deep commitment to traditional Mosel Riesling. The estate focuses exclusively on Riesling grown on the region's steep slate slopes, particularly in renowned vineyards such as Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, and Graacher Domprobst. The wines are fermented and aged in large traditional Mosel casks, allowing the grape and vineyard to take center stage — producing wines known for their clarity, vibrant acidity, and the pronounced mineral character that reflects the slate soils of the Middle Mosel.
Over generations, the Prüm family has helped define the international reputation of Mosel Riesling by consistently producing wines that prioritize elegance, balance, and longevity over power. Their wines have become a benchmark for understanding classic Mosel style, and estates like S.A. Prüm are a large part of why Riesling from the Mosel is considered one of the world's most distinctive and age-worthy white wines.

Varietal Focus: Riesling
A grape defined by vibrant acidity, remarkable versatility, and a deep connection to place
| |
Riesling is one of the world's great white grape varieties, cultivated in Europe for more than six centuries and believed to have originated along the Rhine River in Germany. Its defining trait is high natural acidity, which keeps the wines vibrant across an unusually wide range of styles, from bone dry to richly sweet. In the glass, Riesling typically shows citrus, green apple, white peach or apricot, floral notes, and a characteristic mineral or slate quality. With age, great Riesling develops honeyed and petrol-like aromas — not a flaw, but a hallmark. The 2017 GG in this week's flight is beginning to show exactly that.
Dry vs. Off-Dry vs. Sweet: Dry Riesling emphasizes citrus, minerality, and freshness. Off-dry examples show a touch of sweetness balanced by acidity — enough to round out the fruit without tipping into sweetness. Sweet Rieslings, produced from very ripe or botrytized grapes, are among the most age-worthy dessert wines made anywhere. All three styles are held together by that same underlying acidity, which is why even a sweet Riesling can taste refreshing rather than heavy.

Regional Overview: Mosel, Germany
The birthplace of many of the world’s most iconic Rieslings
| |
The Mosel Valley is one of the most dramatic wine regions on earth. The river winds through vineyards planted on slopes so steep they have to be worked by hand, on slate soils that capture and reflect sunlight to help grapes ripen in an otherwise cool climate. The result is wines with bright acidity, low alcohol, pronounced mineral character, and the ability to age for decades. S.A. Prüm farms some of the most celebrated sites in the valley.
Understanding GG — and why it matters for this flight:
Germany's top estates follow a vineyard classification system run by the VDP growers' association. At the top of that hierarchy sit the Grosse Lage — grand cru vineyards. When a wine from one of these vineyards is fermented completely dry, it earns the Grosses Gewächs (GG) designation. It's the German equivalent of a Burgundy premier or grand cru, but for dry Riesling. The Graacher Domprobst, where this week's anchor wine comes from, is one of those sites. The designation on the label is a meaningful signal: this is wine made to the highest standard, from the best land, by a producer who has earned the right to use it.

Why Rieslings are Worth Exploring
Riesling is one of those grapes that many wine drinkers think they understand until they taste it again with fresh perspective. For some, it carries memories of overly sweet bottles from years past. For others, it simply feels unfamiliar compared to more common varieties like Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc. But when you experience Riesling from great producers and great vineyards, it quickly becomes clear why it has such a devoted following among sommeliers, collectors, and wine lovers around the world.
At its best, Riesling offers something very few grapes can match. It combines vibrant acidity, expressive aromatics, and a strong sense of place, allowing the wines to feel both refreshing and complex at the same time. The three wines in this flight illustrate that range beautifully, from the crisp and approachable trocken style to the layered village expression and finally the depth and precision of a Grosses Gewächs from Graacher Domprobst, one of the Mosel’s most celebrated vineyards.
Whether you already enjoy Riesling or have never quite connected with it before, this flight is a great opportunity to experience how elegant, versatile, and compelling the grape can be when grown in one of the world’s great regions.
